Titus Andronicus- The Monitor Album Review
04 19 2010

Let me start this by saying that my taste usually excludes any bands with too much guitar or drums. I don’t know why I just find it really annoying and associate it with drunk frat boys drunkenly slurring how they just “LOVE TO FIGHT YAAA FELLL BE BRAAA.” With that being said there are the few cases that come out and surprise me with how good they really are. I started the Titus Andronicus album not wanting to like them, I had heard nothing but good things and thought they were going to be some pretentious band because of the shakespere shout out. Well I was wrong, as I so often am with the buzz bands, but Titus Andrnicus kinda rock. They remind me a lot of the glory days of punk and seem like they would put on a kick ass show. The album is really grungy and refined at the same time. You can tell that they don’t take them selves too seriously which is an important factor when attempting to create great music within this genre. I hate bands like Nickel Back who think what they are doing is an art, seriously music is supposed to be fun and make you want to have a good time, titus andronicus do exactly that.
The sound quality creates the illusion that you are chilling in their garage jamming to their latest and greatest and having a good time. The production is clearly well thought out but not refined until it sounds seamlessly perfect, the raw quality to their tracks are what gives it its charm. Perhaps the most crudely named track on the album, a pot in which to piss, surprised me by how soft and controlled it was. Its simplicity makes it one of the stand out tracks for me on the album. As much as I enjoyed their higher energy tracks the ones I enjoyed the most were a bit more relaxed but didn’t abandon their raw sound at all.
Maybe its just me but I never want to jump on the bandwagon with any buzz band which makes them have to impress me that much more. Titus Andronicus is one of the best bands out right now and I bet they will be making music for a long time to come.
