PRETTY LIGHTS

January 26 2012
Manalogue

As summer drew to a close I went “camping” with my wife and her family. By camping I mean we stayed in a gigantic RV on some land they’re developing near a lake in Southern Manitoba. No we weren’t roughing it. In fact, my brother-in-law brought a pretty swank and deluxe sounding iPod/iPhone stereo thingy. While the others went to sleep, he and I listened to PRETTY LIGHTS in front of a fire. Editor’s note: This portable piece of stereo equipment was one of the most rich-sounding units I’ve ever heard. It was the perfect setting (excluding one of the many festivals Pretty Lights plays) and if I weren’t the family man I am, I’d say the only thing that could have made it better would be some Mary Jane. Okay, I confess, if there was some Mary Jane around I totally would have partook.

The new single from Pretty Lights would have been very welcome in this setting too. It’s full of soul, super chill, and rich, like many of life’s subtle moments.

Derek Vincent Smith (aka Pretty Lights) and his creative director, Krystle Blackburn, made this video for the tune too. Is there anything this guy can’t do?

Gotye – Someone I Used To Know (Taste Of Honey edit by Dcup)

January 26 2012
Stoney Roads

So Gotye (got-ya) scored the #1 spot on Triple J’s ‘Hottest 100′ with “Somebody I Used To Know” – plus some other dance acts actually (woo), so the timing of this was near perfect!

Although the song’s been rinsed so thoroughly that the fabric of its soul has almost been lost DCUP has funked this to the 10′s.

In a sorta well executed bootleg, Duncs has thrown in some groovy femme fatale vocals to balance out Wallys whirling voice and saxxed/guitaired it out to the max, a wonderful blend!

DJ Talent show. A good or bad idea?

January 26 2012
Stoney Roads

A lot of people have been weighing in on the trending topic of Simon Cowell’s light bulb moment to cash in on everyone wanting to be a dj by starting a DJ X-factor

After a lot of thought, this might not be the worst idea for the saturated dance music market. However, we are just unsure, so we’ve decided to take a look at the positives and negatives of a concept like this.

Positive Outlook

- If the executive producers understand the “modern day DJ”, that being someone who can produce and dj, we could see some cool tasks going down for serious contestants. e.g. What if they had a weekly task to remix certain songs, and have production master classes!
- Deadmau5 has backed the idea which could mean he knows something more about the format of the show
- Will create a wider audience appreciation for dance music
- People who make mash ups and claim them as their own original could get annihilated by the judges in the auditions
- We all get a better insight into the production of top producers

Negative Outlook on the Show

- They could be just concentrating on finding the girl with the biggest tits or the guys who looks closest  to Tiesto and transforming them into their puppet
- Simon Cowell is the one running the show which means the target audience will be 16 year old girls
- The show format could only be based on dj mixing and not production
- We can expect a similar cheesy format to the existing talent time shows
- Simon Cowell is a deadbeat

add your thoughts at the bottom of the post and we will add them if we see fit!
