Stuck On Repeat / #80

May 11 2012
creamteam.tv

Below is the latest edition of our weekly feature, STUCK ON REPEAT. We’ve asked all our contributors to submit one track and a brief write-up. The track can be new or old, whatever we could not stop listening to this week. These are the songs we’ve had STUCK ON REPEAT.

-
SELECTED BY: VESTELLE – BREAK MY HEART (FT. RICK ROSS)

Estelle released her follow-up to 2008 debut Shine back in February and it seems to have been mostly ignored. Titled All Of Me, it suffers from too many interludes (5/15 tracks) and an obnoxious anthem featuring Chris “no-one-likes-your-music-and-you-suck-as-a-human-being” Brown. All that aside, Estelle continues to capture me with her poise and chameleon-like dexterity. Add a beat and she’ll bang out a radio hit with attitude (see: 2008’s “American Boy” featuring Kanye West), turn off the bright lights and she’s breezy, soulful, natural, bringing to mind a young Sade (see: “Cold Crush“). “Break My Heart” pairs Estelle with Rick Ross and while I wouldn’t put them together on paper, it works. Her confident, free-spirited, smooth vocals matched with Ross’s characteristic aloof bravado are my idea of a perfect love story. They are the couple who realizes each other’s stubbornness makes them individually better. I’d be on board with these two dating.

-
SELECTED BY: MONEYWORTHCARLY RAE JEPSEN – CALL ME MAYBE (GRANT PEYTON EDIT)

Goodbye, what little, if any, street cred I once possessed. And good riddance, because anyone who is too cool for Carly Rae Jepsen’s platinum single “Call Me Maybe” totally sucks! Those decidedly Air France-y strings! The lyrics you want to scoff at except deep inside you know they’re way too real! I don’t even want to know how many innocent bystanders caught me hollering, “Before you came into my life I missed you so bad!” on my bike this week. If you’re worried about your roommate hearing you getting your Radio Disney on from your bedroom, though, Orlando producer Grant Peyton’s got you. His chopped and screwed meets adult contemporary sax edit is—while still not touching the sheer bliss of the original—a more grown folks friendly change of pace. Shoutout @gabrielherrera for the tip.

-
SELECTED BY: JAMS DEANTREE – ALL

Daaaaaamn a lot of times when I write Stuck On Repeat I have to make something up on the spot because in real life I’m still listening to the same A$AP mixtape from six months ago. But this time, for real, I listened to this song on repeat over and over again and kept getting more hyped on it. “ALL” by Chicago emcee Tree loops a jazzy saxophone that puts “Death Of Autotune”’s saxophone sample to shame. And Tree has that awesome sore throat voice that sounds like he smoked a hundred cigarettes and screams everything. This track is so fun you can almost hear him laughing as he records his voice. I can’t wait to hear this live. Don’t forget to watch the video.

Spirit Animal – Crocodile Skins (Big Black Delta Remix)

May 11 2012
Discobelle.net

Big Black Delta is the solo project of former M83 guitarist, Jonathan Bates. He first hit us last year with his remix of his former group’s hit and 2011 anthem, “Midnight City.” Now Jonathan has remixed NYC-based Spirit Animal‘s “Crocodile Skins.” The psychedelic rock vibe is still there, but BBD changes up the guitar riff and adds a driving baseline synth. If the original track didn’t already make you want to emphatically shout “HEY!” then this remix will for sure.

DJ Drama, enlists hip hop all-star and rising ATL auto-tune aficionado for new track “We In This Bitch 1.5.” You might have heard, but Drake and Future have worked together before, and we can’t say that it’s terrible to have them on the same track again. They both bring it; Future a bit more aggressively than Drake, as it turns out –– and Drama proves to be as reliable as ever. Listen below:

Futurecop!: “The Only Way” ft. Keenhouse Video + “We Are the Future” Mix

May 11 2012
Gotta Dance Dirty

Earlier this week, UK producers, Futurecop!, released their much anticipated music video for “The Only Way.” Starring members of the Parks and Recreations cast, as well as Jon Lajoie from the hit series “The League,” the video tells the comedic story of a boy who falls in love with a mannequin. A  love story behind a backdrop of unicorns, miniature golf, and 1980′s visuals is the perfect compliment for the synth-heavy and dream-inducing melodies of Futurecop!.

Find out about “We Are The Future” compilation + a mix after the jump!

Whether you want to classify Futurecop! as synthwave/dreamwave/retrowave or sythnpop, one thing is certain, Futurecop!‘s music is reminiscent of a time when  acid washed jeans and Members Only jackets were the norm. Futurecop! is not alone in emulating sounds from the 1980′s, and in order to introduce the world to artists with similar thoughts and ideals, they curated a compilation titled “We Are The Future.” With tracks from personal favorites Anoraak, Fear of Tigers, and Lifelike, ”We Are The Future” is the perfect companion for a summertime escape from the surrounding world. “We Are The Future” will be available June 5th, 2012.

Lil B Raps Over The Titanic Song

May 11 2012
Pretty Much Amazing

raps over what he calls “one of the realest songs ever made,” the cheese-jam to end cheese-jams, ’s “My Heart Will Go On” (or, possibly even cheesier, a saxophone rendition of the Oscar-winning, Grammy-winning chorale). Lil B’s words would be inspiring if we weren’t overcome by goofy smiles and snickers as the saxophone refrain kicks into full gear. We kind of lost it when Based God started singing the chorus.

Iron & Wine covers George Michael: “One More Try”

May 11 2012
Pretty Much Amazing

are really fond of ’s “One More Try,” for some reason. First they covered it for the AV Club, now they’re releasing it as a single called Two Sides of George (on its b-side, the band covered the Lowell George-fronted Little Feat’s “Trouble,” get it?). Sam Beam’s said that “One More Try” is a great tune whose lasting power is hidden by cheesy ‘80s production, so of course his band’s stripped-down cover reveals the beautiful, yearning song it is at heart – we’re loving that orchestral instrumentation (especially the horns!) and those gorgeous choir vocals. Check it out.

Carl Cox reveals his 2012 Ibiza recruits

With scene hero Carl Cox at the helm, The Revolution at Space remains one of Ibiza’s standout success stories. Last year marked a decade on the White Isle for Cox and his crew, and he’s set to return in a big way this season. Having already announced the concept for The Revolution in 2012, the stalwart DJ has now revealed the first round of guests he’ll be inviting into the hallowed Space booth on Tuesday nights. From returning alumni to new faces, it’s quite a cast, as you can see in the alphabetically-arranged list below.

While Cox himself will be The Revolution’s most consistent presence, he’s also recruited Nic FanciulliUmek and Yousef as fellow residents. Drum & bass and dubstep get their moment with acts like Andy C and Artwork, but largely it’s big-room tech-house and techno that leads the way. Seasoned Ibiza players John DigweedFatboy SlimDJ Sneak and Laurent Garnier are there, alongside inthemix favourites like Guy JBen SimsDeetron and Josh Wink.

The season stretches from 3 July to 18 September, and a detailed party calendar will be announced soon. We wager that whatever week you’re planning to be there, there’ll be a good reason to join The Revolution.

“Lazy perfectionists” Knife Party explain EP delay

If you’re a diehard follower of high-flying production team Knife Party, you probably noted that the date of 6th May has passed…and still no Rage Valley EP. The duo’s follow-up to 100% No Modern Talking has indeed been delayed, so you’ll have to hold out a little longer for your dose of seizure music. With fans flooding Knife Party’s Facebook asking for an update, Rob Swire and Gareth McGrillen weighed in overnight.

“We’ve missed a couple deadlines on the EP, but we’re delivering the masters on FRIDAY and it will be out shortly after that,” they wrote. “Lateness is due to having lots of shows booked in recently, and also the unfortunate combination of being lazy perfectionists. Putting the final tweaks on everything right now and DESPITE the leaked versions roaming about…the new ones are much, much better ;) Apologies and hold tight – not long now!”

If you’re hankering for a Knife Party fix, look no further than the full hour-long live video from their show at UKF’s 3rd Birthday in London. The set tears through a smattering of the duo’s productions and remixes alongside big-hitters from NeroZeddWolfgang Gartner and even Metallica’s Seek and Destroy. Rage!

New: Ab-Soul – “Black Lip Bastard” f/ Kendrick Lamar, ScHoolboy Q & Jay Rock

May 11 2012
Pretty Much Amazing

We’ve got mixed feelings about remixes that enlist every single rapper who had the time to record a verse – often, they end up sounding weird and crowded and uncomfortably endless. But then we’ve got jams like this remix of ’s Ali-produced “Black Lip Bastard,” which enlists the rest of his cohorts in L.A. based ensemble – including the much buzzed-about , , and . Over a creepy-sexy piano-and-strings beat, everyone drops brutal, electric, and stingingly smart verses. Far from sounding overloaded, it almost sounds too short. In other words –– it’s truly dope. Check it out.

We haven’t heard from ’s finest pottymouthed Brazilian baile funk crew since 2007’s still-awesome With Lasers, but they’re back with a new song, the supremely catchy “Kilo,” which is the first track from their upcoming record Tropical/Bacanal, produced by and Poolside, and an accompanying, appropriately sexy / gross  / ridiculous video featuring Diplo himself (in a cowboy costume!), alongside a couple strippers in fruit bikinis, playing a weird bar game the likes of which we’ve never seen before. It’s obviously NSFW, but also one of the best dance songs we’ve heard in a while. Tropical/Bacanal is out June 26.

R. Kelly: "Share My Love"

May 11 2012
Best New Tracks - Pitchfork

As the action commences in the video for "Share My Love", we catch R. Kelly and two of his female associates-- he's sharing his love, see-- basking in the afterglow, preparing to make an entrance. There's a party going on outside, and much, much more love to share, with several dozen of Kelly's closest friends and associates. This is the image we're given, but the track alone suggests alternate interpretations: an imagined night at Larry Levan's Paradise Garage, perhaps, or for those outside the know, the vicinity of an urban radio station in the mid-to late 1970s.

Kelly outfits "Share," a single off his forthcoming LP Write Me Back, firmly in the proto-disco firmament of Barry White's Love Unlimited Orchestra and the best of the Thom Bell-produced Spinners. It's a lush, string-laden 4/4 rhythm, with suggestions like "take that off, girl, and let the fun begin." Since this is Kelly, you know you're going to get at least one purely original moment, which arrives in the song's middle eight when he merges his virtuosic flair for intimacy-- "Now that we're in this room, let's do what we were born to do"-- with a shout-along slogan of vast proportions. All together now, as the beat drops out: "Populate!"

Azealia Banks – Jumanji

“Jumanji” is the latest effort from Harlem rapper Azealia Banks and in wait for her debut album to drop this will more than suffice. Production comes from Glaswegian beatsmith Hudson Mohawke and NYC production wizard Nick Hook, they manage to incorporate steel drums, horns and a tribalesque beat that matches Azealia’s razor sharp tongue.

Diplo & Usher – Climax (Hervé Remix)

May 11 2012
Discobelle.net

Usher’s single “Climax” is arguably the biggest track of the year and also signals the resurgence of R&B as a genre. It has spurred a slew of straight ill remixes from some of our favorite producers including Keys ‘N Krates and Flosstradamus to name a few. The most recent remix to drop is by London’s Joshua Harvey, aka Hervé. The beginning build is drawn out to create anticipation for when the track really sets off around the one minute mark. From there it’s heavy throbbing bass that’s got a mean attitude like your ex-girlfriend. Stream the track below.

Azealia Banks: "Jumanji"

May 11 2012
Best New Tracks - Pitchfork

At this very early point in her young career, Azealia Banks is becoming known more for a flurry of self-imposed drama (starting random beefs, announcing and then shelving releases) than the songs she's released. But the most interesting thing about "Jumanji", from her new mixtape, is that it's more about what's going on around her. As these new tracks trickle out, we're getting a chance to hear how her distinctive voice works in different settings. Here, her rapping really functions as the bedrock, the steady pulse for the production (by Hudson Mohawke and Nick Hook) to swirl around. It feels like something new could happen at any moment. It brings to mind the way Rustie brilliantly mixed rap new and old into his dense electronic productions on his recent BBC 1 mix--it's an absolutely brilliant beat, bursting with possibility and exploding with color. And then, you know, in the middle of it, there's Azealia Banks. She can rap.

Covercentric: Spector Cover Kavinsky’s “Nightcall”

May 11 2012
Pop Labyrinth

My new favorite British guitar-pop band Spector stopped by Zane Lowe’s show on Radio 1 yesterday for a chat and a two-song live session, one of which is a performance of their anthemic new single “Celestine”, and the other is a surprise cover of Kavinsky’s “Nightcall”. The original recently rose to prominence thanks to its inclusion on the infamous “Drive” soundtrack, which seemed to open the gate for a new craze for late-night-driving 80s-synthpop. Spector’s take is actually quite faithful and solid, with the addition of a guitar solo (for they are a guitar band)! I find it funny how the rest of the band sang background vocals in falsetto to make up for the lack of Lovefoxxx. What I like about the band is that they have a sense of humour, and not just all Joy Division doom and gloom. Check out their cover right below.

STREAM: Spector – Nightcall (Kavinsky Cover)

You can watch their performance of Celestine here, featuring a cameo from Fred’s untimely zits.

The desert-themed video for “Celestine” is also out on Youtube now. Is it only me or is that an S Club 7 reference in the video? And maybe a Madonna’s “Frozen” homage too. They certainly (presumely) know their late ’90s pop!

Radio 1′s certainly been pimping them a lot lately.
Now how about some album news, lads.

Celestine is out May 21 in the UK.
More on Spector.

Killer Mike “Go!”

Turntablism has largely vanished from rap in recent years, so it actually feels a bit jarring to hear such prominent scratching in a new track by a well-known artist. The scratching in “Go!” is particularly aggressive, and the physicality of the performance transfers over to the listener much in the same way you can often feel the movements of the drummer in a well-made recording of a band. This just amps up Killer Mike’s vocal performance, which is bold even for him – the syllables seems to blast out of him with great force, and every sound on the track seems calibrated for maximum implied physical impact.
