It's the Supersound

2009 seemed to be the year for Fool’s Gold, with the rise of the Los Angeles based collective, and the label (no relation) fronted by DJ A-Trak. The former’s affection for Afro-pop, audible tropical landscapes, multi-instrumentalism and the Hebrew language was displayed on their debut eponymous LP with songs as afrocentric as “Sunrise Hotel.” The band has recently announced that they will be putting out their sophomore effort, Leave No Trace, in the summer, and we have our first taste of the album with the brass heavy “Street Clothes.”

Germany Germany are a new local act from Victoria that have been getting some blog hyyype for their indie electro pop sound.

I was just thinking the other day, “what the hell happened to Potal Service?”.  Well, this is maybe kinda what they would sound like in 2011….?

They have an album called, Adventures which has just come out and is quite the gem.  It’s available for listening and a $5 purchase at their bandcamp page.

June 11th is their record release party in Vancouver at Interurban Gallery. They play with another new fave, Bear Mountain, Right and a Topless Gay Love Techno Party dj set.

Last summer we released The Knocks' "Make It Better" with a super retro "original version" called "When You've Got Music" on the B-side, as if it was the vocal they sampled on "Make It Better" even though it was written after the fact. It was a kind of a genius reverse sample of sorts, and it became the inspiration for this year's Same Old Songs EP, but now things have come full circle as our dude Xaphoon Jones samples "When You've Got Music" on the first cut from Chiddy Bang's upcoming Peanut Butter & Swelly mixtape. It's business as usual for Xaph, murdering it on the beat as always, but Chiddy himself is in rare form here as he absolutely bodies the verses with one of his best showings in ages.

Soulful dubstep tunes from the unique UK club scene have been all the rage these days – thanks in part to artists like James Blake, Joy Orbison and Burial. Another producer of merit, London based deadboy, has been on the circuit for a while now, reinterpreting songs from Drake, Jamie Woon and Foals into groovin post-dubstep jams, and putting out a collection of singles and EPs.
