Buckler FW11

February 21 2011
FUNKISM

The theme of the show: “artists using the streets as their medium to communicate messages”. In order to portray this theme, Buckler shut down an entire street in SoHo, NYC and used it as his own runway. Something about watching models walk down the street in the collection just made it seem so much more real. It helped show it’s rugged, but soft quality to the fabrics. Buckler showed mostly somber colors, something different from what most menswear designers have shown this season. However, black isn’t bad. In fact, he showed what worked last season, long silhouettes, lots of layering, and small bursts of color that resembled street art. You all know I’m a big fan of color, but I also like the simple basic colors like the blacks and grays, even the basic white button down shirt. I also felt that the cuts and tailoring were great, and flattering for the average man. All simple, sporty, and classy at the same time.

Thanks to Jose Camacho for the photos since I did not have my camera!

Proud to put early word out on another 7” we’re lighting out further into 2011 in the beam of: the debut release by Purity Ring. “Ungirthed” is one of the most immediate, insistent and joy-demanding songs we’ve heard all year and has rightly already been well-shared and lavished with no small praise for the seamless way its sublimely spooked club swagger bumps up against singer Megan James’s gleeful pop incantations. Look for this lil pop miracle to be made tangible some time in April or beat the rush and pre-order now. An untouched new b-side, cover art, remixes and video all to follow in the coming weeks. Be good to it..!

Jacques Greene – Tell Me (Kingdom Edit)

Kingdom throws some throbbing percussion underneath the sleeper hit from Jacques Greene’s “The Look” EP, and then builds an entirely separate vocal sample that’s integrated seamlessly from the original one. It doesn’t hurt that the original of “Tell Me” is already a pulsating, hypnotic gem. As someone who’s listened to the original of the track so many times that it’s etched into my brain, I thought the changes were pretty small at first; but halfway through something shifts and it becomes a totally new thing.

Scotland based label LuckyMe are building an army of talent who you’ll probably keep hearing rave reviews about throughout 2011; Jacques is only one member of a much bigger creative family that’s worth getting familiar with. If somehow you missed Greene’s debut EP on LuckyMe, grab it and hold it close to you throughout the night.

Another new one from John Maus‘ forthcoming LP We Must Become The Pitiless Censors Of Ourselves, which, on the strength of the two stellar tracks we’ve heard so far, has quickly become one of our most anticipated albums of the Spring. We Must Become… is out soon on Upset the Rhythm.

PHASE02 - Love for art and music

Sjalom all! I’m in quite a relaxed mood today, therefore don’t expect to find any uplifting, in your face, “omg too much bass” material in this post. Instead, sit back, relax and enjoy the following beauties.

First up, a new Goran Tech production called “One Way EP” which is already his 5th release on Artefact records.
The track you can find below is called Space hero, in my opinion the coolest of the three. It has a very funky feel because of the jazzy trumpet chords and the flanged vocals. Still, because of the drum rolls you can also feel kind of a bouncy touch in it. It’s also the ideal tune to use in a set to keep the crowd going and to build up to something new… overall: great stuff! Buy here.

“Black Noise”, the latest album of Hendrik Weber, aka Pantha du Prince, made a deep impression on me when listening to it for the first time. All the tracks consist of very special sounds that Hendrik and his collegues “found” on a field recording session. Add some original taps, hits and knocks on self made instruments and there you have it: 11 splendid, subtle, often dreamy technotracks. Below you can find the third track of the album (you’ll immediately hear the special sounds he used). You can also find a remix by Animal collective. Buy the album here.

I’m also a huge fan of Bonobo these days! The latest album, called Black Sands, is the fourth studio album of UK based Simon Green (alias Bonobo). The interesting thing about this full-length is that it has a pretty complex style. Obviously there is an electronic influence with some downbeat and hip/trip hop but very often you can hear some future-jazz and even dubstep in it. And then there are also the vocals of Andreya Triana on three tracks which makes the album explore the hidden land of electro-samba. In all, I think we can best call it chillout/ downtempo because that’s what you can feel in most of the tracks although I actually don’t like to make these genre divisions for you, that’s up to you…
Overall, this… is much more than only muzak in hipster cafés!
Check out the following remix of the fourth track which is not on the album. It gives the original a more baile funk, UK funky garage feel… Buy the album here.
