Glasgow Underground returns!

February 23 2011
PHASE02 - Love for art and music

We don’t want to become somebody’s property. We don’t want to give up on our liberty. No legs, no eyes, so I walk just because we are told.” That’s what the original vinyl by Mash from 2006 told us. Now, five years later, 90′s house label Glasgow Underground brings out five reworkings of the original tune. It’s also the official return of the label since label owner Kevin McKay got a bit distracted by setting up Heartbeats recs. and Breastfed recs., the latter being the label that signed “motherfucker’s gonna drop the pressure” Mylo.
So, the label is back and their first release is an EP featuring remixes of somebody’s Property by Mash.
The remixes include reworkings from Turbo Recordings artist Sei A (deep, kick-heavy, hypnotic), Mash (slow-motion disco), Kevin McKay (synthed-up house), Rob Etherson (jacking) and The Revenge cohort OOFT (tripped-out bass). They’re all strong remixes but we’ve chosen the Sei A remix because it keeps a superb balance between deep, hypnotic and jackin’ techhouse. Glad to have them back and we wish them all the best for 2011!

DISCOATTACK // EXPLORING FUTURE BEATS
HOLA!!

LIFELIKE HEATWAVE

February 23 2011
Stoney Roads - Dance and Indie Music and News

talk about heat, parasian lifelike sampled up the old b.w.h tune ‘stop‘ (1983) to reignite them disco flames jazzing it along with a modern punch for a saulty dancefloor delight.

the intros a ton more bossy and around 3:48 is when memories should come flooding back!

Psychic Friend “Once A Servant”

If I didn’t know this song was written and performed by Will Schwartz before I heard it, I might not have realized it. I’ve been a fan of Will’s singing and songwriting in Imperial Teen and Hey Willpower for years, but though this song with his new band Psychic Friend is within his wheelhouse of melodic pop, his voice is noticeably different. It’s less bratty and less wispy, and a lot more direct in projecting earnest, kind-hearted emotion. This is a beautifully constructed pop song, the parts are simple but very emphatic. It basically lingers on the same romantic feeling for three and a half minutes, but there are subtle dynamic shifts through the whole thing. The bridge is what really sells this one for me — there’s something so angelic and lovely about the way it ascends toward its climax.

FOODAM

February 22 2011
FUNKISM

The Italians know romance, especially when it comes to food. They’ve already come up with a sumptuous combination of caffeinated cake, cream and cocoa layers in Tiramisu. This literally means ‘pick me up’ and it is said that Venetians ate this for the energy to make love all night. Children of the world have been exposed to Disney’s animated film Lady  and the Tramp. And we still envision long strands of spaghetti  joining two hungry lips. What else have they come up with to ameliorate those ravenous nights of unfulfilled dreams?

Art and design crashed into the food mix and they said to one another, “Sei la mia anima gemella”. You are my soulmate.

Marry the essence of these three sparks that permeate our very existence, throw them together into an institution with the minds of Vito Gionatan Lassandro and Gabriela Cistino and we celebrate the birth of a foxy child, FOODAM. The Food Design and Art Museum launches its first project exhibition, entitled Food For Future, this Spring.

“Based on the view that relations exist between food, design and the arts: one gives the opportunity for the manifestation of the others.  In a world characterised by a surplus of information, there is no such thing as food without design or imagination without product.  Food and nutrition, are among the most appropriate subjects for reflection on society…The analysis goes beyond the body to the very centre; just as with food: we ingest substances to create culture.”

A call for entries
Any visionary can apply and submit a project for potential exhibition until March 4, 2011. It’s free!

“It could be a product or a prototype, a book or a infographic, a website or a process, a taste or a scenario, a restaurant or a recipe. Food talks about our life. Its future will change our world.”

The Art Department – ICU (stream)

Discobelle.net

The new album from The Art Department (Canadian techno/house Legend Kenny Glasgow and Toronto’s Jonny White) comes out on April 25th, 2011. Whether or not it’s “gothic house”, if it’s anything like their previous work, it’ll be jammed to the seams with haunting spiritual vocals, jacking deep-bleep synth foundations, and some transcendental 5am dancefloor moments.

Here’s a preview of “ICU”, taken from one of their Crosstown Rebel curated podcasts. While it’s part of a mix and not perfect quality, you can still get an idea of how fantastic “The Drawing Board” is shaping up to be.
