Fiend – "Absolutely"

February 24 2011
Pitchfork: Best New Tracks

Back in his No Limit days, New Orleans rap veteran Fiend delivered his lyrics in a scrambled, pitched-up growl, sounding like a demon starving for souls. These days, though, he's adapted a wizened grown-man mutter, and when he ad-libs between verses, he sounds almost exactly the same as he does when he's rapping. By falling in with old No Limit buddy Curren$y's up-and-coming weed-rap clique, Fiend has done great favors for both himself and for rap listeners, since now we get to hear him using that husky drawl over top-shelf psychedelic rap production like the woozy, cut-up glitch-thump on "Absolutely". It's a weed song, one of many on Fiend's excellent new Tennis Shoes & Tuxedos mixtape. And it's a weed song with very worldly, relatable concerns, like how the hell are you supposed to get that smell out of the cord in your hoodie? But the song isn't really about anything as specific as weed. Instead it's about a feeling-- that sensation you get when you hear an excellent rapper find a groove that fits him exactly, to the point where his voice sounds like it's always been a part of this beat. And when the track drops away into a wobbly little keyboard riff on the chorus, and Fiend breaks out a great little headspun sing-song, the whole world drifts just slightly out of focus for a second.

Patrick Stump “Spotlight (Oh Nostalgia)”

I find it very easy to embrace the idea of post-Fall Out Boy Patrick Stump. He’s very charming and talented, he has great taste and a huge amount of ambition. I want to like this guy’s music and I think he has the potential to be a good pop artist outside of his old band. That said, I don’t think he’s there yet. His first EP has its moments, but for the most part it suffers because Stump seems so eager to play it straight and prove his legitimacy as a pop/R&B act that a lot of his personality gets lost in the gloss.

Specifically, there is not enough tension in this music. Fall Out Boy worked because Stump’s technically impressive, R&B-inflected voice was spitting out these verbose, snarky lyrics in the context of jumpy mall rock arrangements. (Truly, that band does not get enough credit for being as weird and distinct as they were.) Stump thrives when his voice is just slightly out of place, but too much of his EP puts his voice in its most expected musical context and it comes out sounding generic. This is frustrating because some of this material is right on the edge of being quite good.

For example, “As Long As I Know I’m Getting Paid” could really be something if the lyrics were just a bit edgier and the arrangement wasn’t so overworked and airless. It comes out sounding like a mildly experimental Maroon 5 song. If you watch him perform the song in this Rolling Stone acoustic session, it comes off much better. I think the difference is mainly in that the acoustic version implies a lot of musical ideas whereas the studio recording executes all of them in the most obvious way possible, leaving nothing to the imagination.

“Spotlight (Oh Nostalgia)” is the one song on the EP I consider to be an unqualified success. It plays to all of Stump’s strengths, giving him plenty of room to display his vocal chops in a catchy tune that allows for moments of bombastic rock while also providing some less likely dynamic shifts. It’s a hybrid weirdo pop song, and it’s exactly the sort of thing he should be doing. If Stump truly wants a place in mainstream pop, he’s more likely to get it by embracing the tensions that make him interesting, not by making second-rate versions of the music he admires.

CHRIS DE LUCA

Manalogue

Brand new from CHRIS DE LUCA is a bouncing monster with hints of glitch and techno courtesy of BE BONKERZ. I’m all about the synth stabs which makes choosing the standout cut a bit more difficult. You see, those stabs are in every mix. If you made me choose one, I think PLASTIC LITTLE takes it with their (more) housey interpretation.

MP3: 1,2,3 Riding Coach mp3

Last year, we posted two tracks from Pittsburgh’s 1,2,3 and had claimed “these guys are going places,” much like Freelance Whales. Now, exactly one year later, they’ve signed to Frenchkiss Records (the same label Freelance Whales are on!), and are reportedly putting out their debut sometime this year. We’ve just received the first glimpse of said debut with “Riding Coach,” a dreamy, electric guitar driven affair that’s got a bit of a hip hop beat to it, matched with soothing falsettos and hazy synths. Kind of sounds like Foster The People but calmer, and more organic. Told you these guys were going places, download below and see for yourself.

feral friday pt. 17

Stoney Roads - Dance and Indie Music and News

back to basics and the feral friday mould, two bangers for you to sink your teeth into. first up ado a dutch producer making pretty hard tunes in the style of proxy, huoratron, distrakt, beetroots the list can go on for ever. there are so many new producers trying to replicate the sound that the mention artists create but most fall short due to lack of creativity, ado is far from this he crafts heavy distorted bass line music that has that little extra spice to make it shine above most other standard bangers out there. X-ray is a techy style track with plenty of samples and loops to keep you interested.

ADO – X-ray

savage skulls have teamed up with sprinkle juice and tony senghore, sprinkle juice is quite mysterious i couldn’t find much except that im guessing he’s a vocalist hes added a pretty nice vocal over a tasty bass line intertwined with smooth punchy synth lines to get you jiving. this release is out through the label that does no wrong sound pellegrino, as always its digital release only so jump on beatport to get this dynamite release. Wow posted the other original off the ep but i thought you need to taste this.

Gotta Dance Dirty

If you haven’t been watching out for Savage Skulls, then you need to look past the artists you “love” trying to make a thousand sounds into one bpm. They’ve just released an incredible 2-side EP on Sound Pellegrino: “Caravan/Watching You”. While Caravan was aimed to be the anchor track on the EP, the sleeper Watching You is an instant fav and has gotten huge recognition from Sound Pellegrino:

“We asked Savage Skulls to come up with a b-side to “Caravan” and they delivered “Watching You”, co-produced by Tony Senghore and featuring Sprinkle Juice. This one’s a filthy backroom anthem reminiscent of the best of Green Velvet, and early Tiga club bangers from –dare we say– the electroclash days? Minus the pompous new wave references and with added tech-funk sexyness + dangerously FAT kicks. For those too shy to cope with the Sprinkle Juice vocals but who still wanna hear the word “nasty” whispered in their ear, we included a dub.”
