RECD: Jamie Woon Lady Luck / Nigh Air remixes

Look out James Blake and Jamie xx, there’s a new Brit with swagger that’s got a knack for combining soul with the prominent emerging bass trend coming out of the UK. His name is Jamie Woon; he first got noticed last year with his Burial co-produced “Night Air” and his EP by the same name. The singer/songwriter has just released the first official single from his forthcoming debut, Mirrorwriting, and it’s honestly one of the dirtiest tunes we’ve heard this year.

MP3: Elite Gymnastics WΛKΛ (Flocka) / (Lady) GΛGΛ stream

If you recall, we blogged about Elite Gymnastics back in June, and enjoyed their debut EP so much that we included “Is This On Me?” in our Top 100 of 2010. Over the last month the outfit has released – all for free via their website – their Neu! 92 EP, and have just dropped two cuts entitled “WAKA” and “GAGA,” which surely enough are mind boggling reworkings of tunes from Waka Flocka Flame and Lady Gaga.

Kompakt announces Panda Bear’s Surfer’s Hymn 7″

February 23 2011
GORILLA VS. BEAR

Kompakt has announced the final 7″ single leading up to the release of Panda Bear’s Tomboy LP. According to the label’s website:

On March 14th, KOMPAKT is thoroughly honoured to release the final installment from ANIMAL COLLECTIVE’s Noah Lennox aka PANDA BEAR limited 7” series. This follow previous 7” on his own PAW TRACKS, FATCAT and DOMINO as the build up continues to his forthcoming full length TOMBOY on PAW TRACKS due out in April.

SURFERS HYMN eases like the ocean crashing against the beach. In fact, Noah’s voice ebbs and flows in harmonious grace with a sample of that very sound while the blissful thump of a bass drum keeps the song together.

ACTRESS of Honest Jon’s fame makes a rare remix appearance with a take on the original – his signature tribal thump makes ease in what is the most straight laced dance floor stunner we’ve heard from him ever. Somewhere found between DJ KOZE and VILLALOBOS we are thoroughly floored with this remake.
As with the previous releases, Scott Mou (1/2 of Jane w/ Lennox and Other Music) does an impeccable job creating the artwork for this release.

Glasgow Underground returns!

PHASE02 - Love for art and music

We don’t want to become somebody’s property. We don’t want to give up on our liberty. No legs, no eyes, so I walk just because we are told.” That’s what the original vinyl by Mash from 2006 told us. Now, five years later, 90′s house label Glasgow Underground brings out five reworkings of the original tune. It’s also the official return of the label since label owner Kevin McKay got a bit distracted by setting up Heartbeats recs. and Breastfed recs., the latter being the label that signed “motherfucker’s gonna drop the pressure” Mylo. So, the label is back and their first release is an EP featuring remixes of somebody’s Property by Mash.

The remixes include reworkings from Turbo Recordings artist Sei A (deep, kick-heavy, hypnotic), Mash (slow-motion disco), Kevin McKay (synthed-up house), Rob Etherson (jacking) and The Revenge cohort OOFT (tripped-out bass). They’re all strong remixes but we’ve chosen the Sei A remix because it keeps a superb balance between deep, hypnotic and jackin’ techhouse. Glad to have them back and we wish them all the best for 2011!

After Jamie XX put his magic touch on this, our good friend over in NYC Cousin Cole takes a shot at a remix of that beautiful Adele track “Rolling In The Deep” where he keeps the shuffle and add some juicy bits, US funky for the masses…
