When fame hits you as suddenly as it did when Yolanda Be Cool and Dcup released ‘We No Speak Americano’, you can often wonder what was going through the artists mind at the time. To find this out and more, we caught up via email!
When you heard the mastered version of ‘we no speak americano’ for the first time with DCUP, did you feel like you had made something that would blow up as much as it did?
No not really. Actually not at all. We were actually even a little unsure if what we sampled could be considered sacrilege in Italy. So we emailed our Italian dj buddies, Mowgli, Solo & Riva to see what they thought. They all replied with the same answer which was basically. “haha this is funny” which we didn’t know whether was a good a thing or not.
Have you ever used your music to seduce someone?
Umm yep. It was my first and most consistently reliable trick for years:)
Who is your favourite dance music artist at this minute?
Morgan Geist aka Storm Queen – Everything this guy has done and is now doing is amazing.
Are there any other Aussie producers catching your attention at the moment?
Wax Motif & Parachute Youth are on fire at the moment.
What is the song you guys hold closest to your heart?
Juicy - The Notorious B.I.G.
90% of people reading this are probably bedroom producers – what’s your best pro-tip for kids starting out making beats?
Before writing a track make sure you have a strong idea and direction you want to take your track. Then go mad experimenting with all sorts of weird and crazy stuff in your pursuit of creating something unique.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but it seems like Winnipeg is a hotbed for ghetto funk. We’ve seen some incredible acts come through this city – NICK THAYER being the latest. We can thank our friends atMUSIC FIRST for this show.
I can’t imagine a producer as diverse as Thayer. Everything he does falls loosely into breaks, but the tempo ranges in his production makes him stand out. Yes, there’s breaks plain and simple, but also some of the best ghetto funk and dubstep I’ve heard Thayer has noodled.
The show is at The Zoo on Saturday, January 28. Tickets are $10 and are available at the usual sources. For more details check the facebook event page. Local support provided by some of Winnipeg’s finest, THE V@XXINE, and two of my personal favourite jocks ILL TYPE and CODA with MC PUCONA.
Here’s a taste of what to expect, but I imagine it’ll be so much better, especially because Thayer plays sets almost consisting of edits he’s done himself.

Dubbel Dutch threw this one up on his soundcloud earlier this afternoon. It’s his fresh-take of Yolanda Be Cool‘s latest single, “Villalobos For Presidente”, which brings me to the same question I keep asking: Is Villalobos going to headline DEMF this year due to his absence in 2010? The rumor-mill seems to think so.

After a one week hiatus, CONTROL is back with a dancey lineup featuring two big shots of Disco House, the DnB gone Disco producer from Atlanta known as Treasure Fingers and one of the biggest up and coming names in the genre, BURNS. Unfortunately, a disco rollerskate boogie is most likely not allowed inside the Avalon in Hollywood on Friday night, but be sure to expect one happy crowd and two sensational DJs going all night.
Please RSVP names to JONAH@GOTTADANCEDIRTY.COM to be on our discount ticket list for the evening. All names must be submitted before 5:30pm Friday night.
Alright alright I know this song is played out to the max and I'm sure you've put it in the depths of your memories like I have, but in case you ever need to put some Dutch bang into a song request, give this one a go. Hopefully our friends, SAVOY, will be coming to LA soon!

Well as of recently we were granted the privilege of interviewing Yolanda Be Cool.We were excited as we love there music and were wanting to know more about the guys behind hits like “We Speak No Americano” .So here is what we talked about.
Anyone who listens to your music would probably have their own way to describe it, but how would you describe it?
We like to call it party tech which is basically our way of saying fun music with techno sensibilities…..techy beats with quirky samples that make it a little less serious than maybe some techno music….
How did it all come about?
We have always loved a diverse range of music. We are just as happy listening to Biggy in the car as we are on the terrace at Cocoon dancing to Ricardo Villalobos so i think our sound is a combination of these..
How has it been seeing “We Speak No Americano” blow up in all of the charts?
It has been surreal to say the least….we wanted to make a fun party track and did not for a second think it would even enter pop charts…we just wanted our favorite djs to play it so yes….pretty surreal…
Besides the obvious, what’s your favorite line in “Pulp Fiction”?
Wow…there’s so many…its def an all time fav movie of ours so to pick one fav line is like asking a mother to pick their favorite son but since you asked…would have to be the line where Samuel asks the robbers to reach into the bag and grab his wallet and he says its the one that says bad motherfucker…
How do these songs happen, do you sit and listen to older songs to get inspired/sample or do you just start writing music?
Sort of..we are always looking for ideas for tracks whether the samples be from the 20s, Indian pop or Italian folk….with Americano, it was actually suggested to us by Little Bambalam, some very talented djs on the same booking agency as us in Aus who were playing the original in their sets…
I hate to ask the “what are your top songs/what’s on your ipod”, but what are some songs have you have been really enjoying lately?
If you mean dance, pretty much anything that comes out on Dirtybird, we lose it over, Hickup is an artist we have fallen in love with, Homework Djs are another act we are really excited about. Plus any of the Made to Play or Deadfish podcasts. Jamie Jones is also someone we have been following a lot for a while now. If you mean more just for listening, Bambola by Tuccillo we have been listening to on repeat, and the new Lifelike Ep is really cool too.
Any new songs in the works? A tour? What else can we expect to see from you?
Yes, lots of new stuff in the works. We have a follow up planned with our man DCUP,which we set ADE as the deadline for, we also have just recorded a couple of tracks with the amazingly talented Pongo Love from Buraka Som Sistema and another with Moscows own Bazooka Boom. In terms of touring, feels like thats all we are doing at the moment but if you mean the US, we are very excited about joining the Blue Collar Agency for Nth America and we are planning a tour for March next year. Should be fun.

Here’s a bit of a rushed mix I did for THE SHAKE, a weekly radio show LOTEKand I do every Friday night on KICK FM. Lotek and I are both out of town this week, hence the mix. It starts off with a bunch of robotdisco jams and gets into some house-flavoured breaks and ends with nu disco and tech house.
That bumpy minimal house sound has been spreading far and wide over the last few years. Deadfish; Sound Pellegrino; Exploited; What! What! Records... all quirky offspring of the mighty Made To Play and Dirtybird imprints, the dons of fun, sample-based house...
First up, Exploited head-honcho Shir Khan has sent over a remix by duo of the moment, Yolanda Be Cool, who've featured on Pelski in the past. Their recent, and frankly slightly annoying, 'We No Speak Americano', has plagued the radio and Ministry of Sound comps. For me, however, their earlier 'Afro Nuts' is their standout track, but it's good to see them getting some well deserved attention. Here they remix Brazilian producer Chernobyl's tango-influenced sounds - a mix of house and cumbia that he calls 'Le Cheval':
Sound Pellegrino are giving away another whole brand new EP for free here. The pick of the bunch comes from Gucci Vump (Brodinski and Guillaume from The Shoes), who provide another eerie, enchanting house track. This one comes on like a Willy Wonka soundtrack put through the Sound Pellegrino beat machine. Flutes and a sweetly soft female songstress whistle along to a clean, satisfying kick:
I've waited with baited breath for this dOp remix of one of my favourite tracks of 2009, Renaissance Man's 'What Is Guru'. It is unfortunately a huge disappointment, and Riva Starr's remix still comes out trumps. Yes, dOp add a little soul but for the most part it's a monotonous and repetitive take on an wonderfully inventive track from the eccentric Parisian outfit:
Worthy and Yankee Zulu's brand of house music revolves around beefy tribal beats, bound to get you bouncing. They've collaborated on a few tracks together, each big tech-house stompers: 'BS Connection', 'Bad Side' and 'Concumbia'. Now they've kindly thrown a new edit to us:
Eldoko, organiser of the recent Gottwood festival, just saw his EP released on What What! Records with his Woodworm Blues EP. Monkey Safari have rejigged the trumpet-sampler into a chuggy affair enforced with cogent smack of snares. Monkey Safari will sample anything - whether it's old bluegrass; flutes; trumpets; or dusty folk vocals - and make it as fun and chunky as possible. They're also kind enough to put together plenty of free bootlegs for us:
Most of the artists I'm posting here belong to our favourite agency Jackmode (home to Jet Project - who we have playing this weekend at Big Chill House here - as well as Round Table Knights, Idiotproof, Renaissance Man, ZDS, Solo, Justin Martin, etc). A new addition to their roster is Pol_On, whose deliciously deep, stripped-back remix of Andreas Saag's 'People Say' caught my attention. Definitely one's to watch, here's a beefy house bootleg they sent through:
