Wolfgang Gartner – There and back

02 01 2012

A man known for making music ahead of its time is Wolfgang Gartner and he is with a track that eclipses most mainstream house at the moment.

‘There and back’ is a euphoric european club house banger with a wide audience appeal. With the use of what sounds like an electronically manipulated accordion and deep house pumping kicks, this makes for dramatic drunken dance floor action!

12th Planet Interview

Electronica superstar Skrillex owes a certain debt to John Dadzie.

In this week’s issue of the New Times, I explored the “poster boy of dubstep” and his meteoric rise to fame over the past year. And while Skrillex’s phenomenal reinvention as an EDM maestro came about through his own tireless efforts, the bespectacled artist was helped along the way by Dadzie, who’s better know by his nom de guerre 12th Planet.
He’s been kicking around the world of electronic music for more than a decade, starting out as drum ‘n’ bass selecta and later becoming one of the influential pioneers of dubstep in America.
Dadzie’s coming to the Marquee Theater in Tempe this weekend as a part of Skrillex’s massive Mothership Tour and Up on the Sun got a chance to speak with him via telephone.

You were one of the earliest adopters of dubstep in the U.S., correct?
Yeah, totally. There were those guys that came before me, like Joe Nice and Dave Q over in New York and Baltimore. Those guys were already like established in the scene, but I think I got to play a lot of the markets that dubstep was never in. Going to like Boise, Oklahoma, and Little Rock. I think I was one of the first people to go to those places and play dubstep like four five years ago.

When was the first time you’ve played Phoenix?
I think my first gig in Phoenix under the name 12th Planet was at this place with a gay bar on the bottom and an upstairs lounge on the second floor.

You mean Homme Lounge with cats like Ultrablack?
Yeah. That was in like 2007. That was before they even called themselves Ultrablack. I knew Sluggo [Nick Suddarth] and Adroit [Bryan Marek] from doing drum ‘n’ bass stuff before. It was setup by their friend Cruz, who was definitely one of the first person to start booking dubstep stuff out there. And then Frank Mendez started doing some dubstep shows on this patio of this place he worked at, and from there, it helped lead to where it is now.

What was your first reaction to dubstep?
It reminded me a lot of drum ‘n’ bass. Before I did dubstep I was producing and touring as a drum ‘n’ bass artist. When I went to England, I always noticed there was this second room with some weird music, and there were guys like Slaughter Mob and Skream and Zed Bias making it. I didn’t think it was gonna sound like it does today. It was like a fresh take. I was getting over drum ‘n’ bass at the time because it didn’t really evolve. There was this certain point, around like 2006 or 2007 that nothing really sounded different. It was like the same records were being made over and over and over. No one was really pushing the envelope forward.

When did you become a dubstep convert?
After the Dubstep Warz mix that Mary Anne Hobbs did with like Mala, Skream, Benga, Hatcha and all these names that are pivotal to what dubstep sounds like now was all on one mix. Then it all started to make sense. It really hooked me and I started working on the music. I met up with my partner Drew Best [of L.A.'s influential SMOG night] and he was starting to throw dubstep shows. He was gonna do his first show and he asked me if I wanted to play, but I had to go on tour in Germany. So I recommended guys like Nick Argon and Matty G, and the rest is history.

Dubstep has been constantly evolving since its early days in both the U.S. and U.K.?
Once it got popular around the world, everyone’s had their own take on it. A lot of it has to do with producers getting over making drum ‘n’ bass and took their experience into dubstep, which caused everyone to step their game up. It wasn’t just a minimal sound anymore, it was a maximum effort. To make a dubstep song now you have to spend some time on the craft. A lot new techniques have been learned since then.

‘Stumble’ Remix Competition Winner!

04 19 2011

So the Party Like Us Records guys have made their decision. The winner of the GDD™ ‘Stumble’ Remix Competition is Detroit native/LA resident, Rob Darke. Rob actually just recently got into EDM in the past couple years, saying that he really got into it after using it as a sleep deterrent while writing essays in college, but since his first few dance music experiences, he knew musical production was something he wanted to do. With the help and guidance of his brother Brian, Rob Darke has quickly become keen to the ways of making a solid electronic track, and with influences such as Canblaster, Wolfgang Gartner, and Tony Senghore, it’s safe to say that a bright future lies ahead for this up and comer. Here’s what Udachi had to say about the winning remix:

“I think Rob Darke’s remix is a good example of a nice solid tune, nothing overdone, just straight good. The vocal on the original is tricky because it starts a quarter note late from the 1, and I think it threw a lot of people off. But Rob Darke’s remix makes sense musically and has his own personal flair. The mix is nice and clean, and I love the big build into the 4×4 tease into the soca snare bit. I can hear this in a variety of DJ’s crates; from sunrise sets, to setting the pace for the night. Real classy and gleamin’!”

Find Rob’s remix as well as remixes from the first and second runners up below, and make sure to pick up the full Stumble EP on Beatport!

And finally, the last word from AC Slater, Udachi, and the rest of the PLU crew…“We had so many amazing submissions, it was really hard to pick a winner. Thanks to everyone who entered!”

Together As One: The Aftermath

01 07 2011

Insomniac and Go Ventures did it again!

Together As One boasted a festival to remember, and it certainly was. The massive event went off without a hitch and each artist delivered a set that was unique, massive, and memorable. Whether you witnessed the giant banana that was passed around when Dada Life Unleashed The Fucking Dada, Laidback Luke's 2011 countdown or Rusko smashing the Bassrush Arena, this year's TAO couldn't have been more epic.

This year I wanted to get the full TAO experience, so I decided to skip the VIP treatment and throw myself into the sea of people to gain a true perspective of this massive event.

So, this is how my night panned out at Together As One 2011...

Surviving the line, I finally entered the Sports Arena and there was only one thing on my mind...DADA LIFE!
And wow, those Swedes did not disappoint.

Dada Life took the stage with a visual spectacular that was enough to make anyone's eyes roll into the back of their head. Their song selection... flawless, their execution... perfect. Our GDD homies threw down one of the most intricate and well planned out sets I had ever heard from them (which we all know is saying a lot.) The crowd was enormous and for good reason, the Swedes crushed it and left you only wanting more. Dada Life barraged the crowd with recent smashes like Unleash The Fucking Dada but weren't afraid to throw down some massive classics such as The Reward is Cheese. It was just what I needed to start the night off.
* Although, I really wish they had ended the night ;)

Standout Tracks:
Dada Life - Unleash The Fucking Dada
Deadmau5 - The Reward is Cheese

Around 10:25 it was time to split and I'm sure all you bassheads know exactly where I was headed... Nero!

Nero took to the stage and turned the Bassrush Aent into rubble. The bass was so intense/massive/driven/beautiful that I truly thought the speakers would blow... thankfully my foolish assumption was wrong. Nero gave the audience a set that was comprised of heavy hitting dubstep and intense drum and bass. During Nero's colossal display I ran into GDD friend DANL and we found ourselves simultaneously headbanging, singing along and gritting our teeth all at the same time, sound impossible... then you didn't see Nero at TAO.

Standout Tracks:
Nero - Me & You
Nero - Innocence
N.E.R.D. & Daft Punk - Hypnotize U (Nero Remix)

After Nero and a much needed water break, I went over to watch Laidback Luke give us our 2011 New Years Eve Countdown.

Luke pleasantly surprised me and threw down a dark and groovy set. His perfected style of DJing provided those signature intense build ups and dark beat grooves, in my eyes, a perfect way to start off 2011.

Standout Part:
• The Countdown... duh.

Sadly I could not stay long to watch Luke crush the crowd because I knew that I was missing my boy... Rusko. So I sprinted to the Bassrush Arena to bang my head.

Let me just preface this set review and say that for all you haters that claim Rusko has lost his roots and gone soft... YOU ARE WRONG!

I'm a firm believer in the notion that if you can't get amped about your own music then how do you expect other people to... well Rusko and I apparently are of the same faith. Bottom line, Rusko flat out killed it, surprisingly my favorite performance of all night. The Brit came out like he was ready for battle, screaming on the mic and dropping bombs. With an unbelievably diverse set that included the newest/heaviest dubstep has to offer, some classic throwbacks like Jahova, and some 90's French house? Oh yeah, some 90's French House... which was suprisingly PERFECT.

Standout Tracks:
Rusko - Jahova
Rusko - Your On My Mind Baby
Stardust - Music Sounds Better With You

After Rusko I was dragging my mangled body to see Wolfgang Gartner to end the night with some dark electro.

No surprise here, Wolfgang's twisted synths, dark basses and low end grooves were enough to put a twisted smile on my face. Mr. Gartner threw down all the tracks that you wanted to hear. Everything from Undertaker to Illmerica graced the crowds presence and Wolfgang only left you wishing that the event ended at 4 am instead of 2.

Standout Tracks:
Wolfgang Gartner - Undertaker
• Wolfgang Gartner - Illmerica
• Wolfgang Gartner - Conscindo (Original Club Mix)

Thus, what can I say that I haven't already said about my experience at Together As One? Honestly, not much. The event was well put together and everyone killed it. Until next time my minions.
