New: Wild Nothing – “Wait”

02 02 2012

Remember Wild Nothing’s precious Twin Sister-featuring new single, “Nowhere”? Yeah, well here is the (superior) b-side, “Wait.” Like we said, Captured Tracks will release the “Nowhere” single on February 21st. Both new tracks will appear on Wild Nothing’s forthcoming sophomore LP, which was recorded in a real, professional studio, a first for Jack Tatum.

MP3: New Wild Nothing – “Nowhere” f/ Twin Sister

01 27 2012

Wild Nothing’s Jack Tatum has graduated out of the bedroom and into a real recording studio. Our first taste of the new Wild Nothing sound came this morning with “Nowhere,” featuring the sedated vocals of Twin Sister’s Andrea Estella. Tatum’s ace guitar work is just as jangly as we remember and his pop songcraft just as immediate, but we can’t seem to shake the feeling that we’re listening to a new Pains of Being Pure at Heart track.

Gruesome Flowers

03 10 2011

This Record Store Day (April 16th), Brooklyn label Captured Tracks are re-issuing two hard-to-find singles by the seminal 80′s group The Wake. The band released several albums and singles on Factory Records (home of New Order, Joy Division, the Happy Mondays… you get the point) and also some on Sarah Records. The two re-issed singles bookend the group’s Factory years, with their In addition to these two singles, Captured Tracks asked two of their bands, Beach Fossils and Wild Nothing, to cover the Wake for a split 7″ also to be released on Record Store Day. It makes a whole lot of sense, because both groups seem indebted to the jangly guitars of The Wake.

The whole bundle will be available then, or individually. Here are the original two singles and you can listen to Beach Fossils’ cover of “Plastic Flowers” at Pitchfork.

What a Pleasure

02 10 2011

Beach Fossils’ debut self-titled album was one of my top-ten favorite albums last year, and now February 22nd they’re releasing a new EP called What a Pleasure that continues the light and airy guitars and upbeat drums making this one another winner. It’s eight songs long so nearly another album, though two songs were released as a 7″ late last year so they may not be new to you (read my post on them here). One of the songs features Jack Tatum of labelmates Wild Nothing. Hear a new song below.

♫ Calyer

What a Pleasure is out February 22nd on Captured Tracks.

It seems like whenever you turn around peppy New York indie poppers Pains of Being Pure at Heart have an awesome, toe-tapping new single to listen to. It’s hard to believe we’re only on promo materials for their second album, Belong, which comes out in March 2011.
