cosmogramma.

Flying Lotus is finished his acclaimed masterpiece and is ready to share it with the rest of us. This album is apparently one seamless piece of music, an opus, a journey through an astral landscape. It’s been described as a “space opera” amongst other things – an appropriate tittle that suggests the perplexing scale of this cosmic body of unearthly music. I’m not quite sure how he’s done it, one can only guess and make assumptions as to how he has crafted cosmogramma into a single entity, having also curated many guest appearances, including a collaboration with Thom York on the track “And The World Laughs With You.”

I have an inkling that there will be at least a few new surprises on this album in addition to the signature Dilla-inspired beat work we’ve come to associate with his music. 3×3 featured tracks from Lotus that didn’t even have beats, and personally, I found that refreshing. Lotus recently did an interview with Gilles Peterson on Radio One where he showcased some of the new materials from the album; unfortunately, that show is no longer up on the BBC player, but someone’s taken the time to edit the tracks from that broadcast into a mini cosmogramma preview. There are more rips floating about but I didn’t want to spoil all the fun.

Cosmogramma marks my second “must have” albums of 2010 and will be released in early May through Warp records. Speaking of which, Pre-orders for the first edition CD’s or gatefold vinyl are avaiable now through Bleep. These limited edition copies come with some extra fancy packaging and maybe some other stuff. Read more and order it here.

Fina + B&Gs + Rubik + XI

03 15 2010

Epic post is epic.

I got a couple of pretty interesting tunes from Fina, a Breakbeat/ Trip-Hop producer from Columbus, Ohio. Within these tunes there’s definitely a breaks influence, that goes without question, but there’s also an essence of that whole Squarepusher/ Aphex Twin vibe… And a dash of Orbital. Like some old Warp Records shit. If I were you I would definitely pay attention to this kid.

Fina – Down is Up
Fina – Found
Fina – Intelligence

Oddly enough, B&Gs are roughly in the same vein as Fina and since they’ve both been sitting on my desktop for a solid two weeks, I’m making them both part of this “epic post of dnb/ dub/ techno.” B&Gs have a slightly darker sound to their stuff, but still very perplexing. They describe their sound as “Dubai-inspired capitalist bass” and even though I’m not sure if I really agree with that, nor completely understand what it means, I will say this: they’re solid.

B&Gs – Bearz nnniii!
B&Gs – D_Dd
B&Gs – Ethereprise

Even MORE odd was that Rubik ALSO falls in line with Fina, maybe even more-so with B&Gs. I touched base on this London-based producer when he sent over his absolutely beautiful “Untitled” track, which is why his name might ring a bell more than these other hooligans. Anyway, these three tracks are off of his Remains album, a compilation of older stuff that didn’t really fit any place else. I enjoy all these, but “It’s Not Really You” pretty much nails home the intricate DnB vibe that I love.

Rubik – Cub
Rubik – Honeytree
Rubik – It’s Not Really You

Last but not least, I’ve got some stuff from XI, a Toronto-based Dub producer who rolls with representation from Immerse Records out of Bristol, England. Again, leaning more towards the Drum and Bass feel of this post, but with an added dose of Dub. “000″ is really riding the DnB tip while “Slippin” revolves more around a series of ambient synths (it reminds me a bit of Joris Voorns remix of “Beach Kisses.”) Enjoy these freebies and pick up the rest of his catalog over at the Chemical Records storefront.

XI – Slippin
XI – 000

Our fave lil Vancouver hero Cameron Reed of Music Waste fame has blowing up with his Babe Rainbow project.  His new “Shaved” EP is out Feb 8/9th on Warp Record (who you might know?).

Also check out some love from the mighty Stereogum who premiered his Doom remix…

MF Doom – Gazzillion Ear (Babe Rainbow Remix)

We could go on but we mainly want to brag that we put on his first live show.

He has been collaborating with the Salazar people who have done little mini films for each of the songs on the ep.  Check out the teasers they’re splendid and creepy and just how you like it.

Maximo Park + Clark.

Maximo Park signing to Warp seems like it’s going to be alot of fun, well, if this Clark Remix is anything to go by. Fan’s of Clark’s older output may be dissapointed with the new direction his work is taking (more commericial, apparently) but we like Clark both new and old and this remix will hopefully get some new people to check out his music.
