Cults – “Everybody Knows” (Leonard Cohen cover)

02 01 2012

For a series in which young bands cover Leonard Cohen classics, called Old Ideas With New Friends, New York duo Cults offer this sweet rendition of 1988′s “Everybody Knows.” More Leonard Cohen covers by some of your favorite bands are forthcoming, including ones by Deerhunter and Atlas Sound’s Bradford Cox and New Pornographer’s AC Newman.

Last we checked in with Cults, they were working on a hip-hop remixtape, with the likes of Freddie Gibs and Lil B. They even released a track from the novel project. As for Leonard Cohen, the living legend has just released his first album in nearly eight years. Check out our review.

The Weeknd – “Montreal”

01 31 2012

High 5 Collective have released another video inspired by the evocative music of The Weeknd. Last year they put House of Balloons’ “The Morning” to film, and now they’ve just released a video inspired by Echoes of Silence‘s gorgeous standout, “Montreal.” As Disco Naïveté points out, the clip zeroes in on the song’s French refrain: “laisse tomber les filles,” or “leave the girls alone,” and depicts a father abusing his teenage daughter.

My personal favorite Feist song, “The Bad In Each Other,” the opening track from last year’s great Metals album, now has a visual accompaniment. The clip is a puzzler, but pretty nonetheless. Check it out below:

ScHoolboy Q – “Nightmare on Figg St.”

01 30 2012

It shouldn’t even be news by now that we and the rest of the internet are obsessed off our faces with Schoolboy Q’s absolutely awesome new record Habits & Contradictions. First “weed and brews” anthem “Hands on the Wheel,” then that song that samples Menomena (“There He Go”) and now Q’s own horror movie take on “Niggas In Paris,” “Nightmare on Figg Street,” which features truly unreal, borderline disorienting production from A$AP Ty Beats and a bunch of brutal verses from Q. Now it’s got an appropriately nocturnal and dangerous video courtesy the director Jerome D. Watch and listen.
