Adam Kanyama – The Golden Child

04 26 2012

Adam Kanyama is the future, at the tender age of 16, Adam has already performed at the Swedish grammy awards, won the all-Scandinavian “Rap It Up” contest and starred in a 30-minute special on Swedish national television. It’s safe to say that no artist on the Swedish rap scene has been this anticipated.

“The Golden Child” is his debut single that was released just the other day, Adam goes in hard with a sick flow on this soulful tune and shows us that in no manner is he afraid of the competition.

Miami Nights 1984 presents: Stallions

04 26 2012

We were lucky enough to be in a short interview session with Michael Glover, the person behind Miami Nights 1984 project. You might know him from his remix of Gotye‘s Somebody That I Used To Know which apparently impresses the Belgian singer, besides the Australian bloggers of course (i.e. us), so much that it will be included on his limited vinyl collab release. So what is up with him after the release of his full length album Turbulence?

A lot, apparently. A few days ago, Michael has published a 3-track EP titled Coastal Paradise under a brand new new retro-chillwave project of his called Stallions . In our opinion, the tracks definitely have a more laidback feeling around them compared to the MN84 ones. We are particularly fond of his treatment of the beats and percussions on these tracks, which are a bit reminiscent of those slow-space disco beats, with heavy percussions drenched in reverbs and delays that reminds us of other chillwave acts such as Washed Out or Toro Y Moi. Very atmospheric.

So, is this just a kind of one-time project or will he put more dedication behind Stallions? Michael said that he would definitely love to put more time in Stallion, saying that he does have a few more tracks up his sleeve that he plans to release sometime. In our conversation he told us that the project started a while back when he was having some sort of producer mental block and his friend (and partner at the Rosso Corsa Records),  Lazerhawk suggested him to try to make some chillwave tracks. Apparently it worked for Michael.

What’s more, he already has the next up and coming Miami Nights 1984 EP on the way, which, according to him, would sound much different from the italo-disco sound of his Turbulence album (Ocean Drive is our favourite track by the way). The new EP, Michael said, will feature a somewhat funkier vibe compared to the previous MN84 stuff.

It’s always a nice chat with you Michael, best of luck with your project!

Housemeister – Music is Awesome Remixed

04 25 2012

Inspired by Housemeister‘s incredible third release, Music is Awesome, three greats have created their own versions of some of the albums best dance floor tracks.  That’s right; Zombie Nation, Djedjotronic and SCNTST have all remixed their favorite tracks off of Music is Awesome and put together the stellar results for this EP.  Each artist delivers their own unique blend of sounds; from experimentally abstract synth play to familiar rolling basslines.

Kris Menace, KoweSix Vs. Empire Of The Sun – Walking On eFeel (Leksy Mashup)

04 25 2012

Empire Kris

There’s a reason we don’t post mashups too often, usually it’s their bloated names and well… they just suck. Although still awfully long we can dig this Kris Menace/KoweSix vs Empire of the Sun mashup up by Lesky.

So what’s so good about it? Well the fact its pretty seamless says a lot, it doesn’t feel built in a way most mashups go with one song trouncing the other – half-way through and it’s easy to forget this isn’t a proper remix or original haha

It’s so good in fact Kris actually uploaded this to his own damn Soundcloud!

“eFeel” is actually taken from Kris’ new album ‘Electric Horizon’ and they have a remix comp going with a proper swag of prizes, all the detail here.

Mr Oizo – Stade 3

04 25 2012

So did you hear, STADE 3 is out and it’s free on the highly suicidal www.oizo3000.com ? I was up at 2am (Australian time, yo) trying to download this frantically. I succeeded after the site crashed 4.5 zillion times, but I think it was worth it in the end.

STADE 3 is a crisp blend of all the sounds that have become familiar, nostalgic and classically Oizo over time. I was slightly worried that this EP would fall into the trap of being overtly experimental bleeps and bloops but I think its landed itself in a nice mushy place that a lot of danceheads, fans and foes alike will appreciate.

(If you haven’t seen the teaser yet, check it. William Fitchner + Flat Eric I wonder if they got along off set?)

There are a couple banging tracks, including STADE 3 which is a dope head bopping track you can imagine a lot of guys with baggy pants on would enjoy despite having a strict mantra of “tekkaz sux br0″. It’s deeply ominous and creepy just how I like my music.  Carmen Castro also makes a return on TOODOO bringing back her fun and rad rhymes

My favourite track would have to be the aptly named WC which is a deep, grinding track with smatterings of the occasional bloop but I just really am in lust with the overall eerie vibe of the track. If you’re making a movie, use this in your chase scene, please.  If however, you’re feeling lost and sad in this EP and miss the old Oizo check out TEXTES because it has a lot of resemblance to Oizo’s own remix of Tiga – Shoes.

See if you agree?

Germany beats Youtube

04 25 2012

Youtube

The all powerful video site Youtube has had some wind pulled from its sails after the German performance rights organisation GEMA successfully argued that they had not done enough to stop infringing content from being uploaded.

A German court made the ruling based on seven of 12 GEMA owned videos saying Youtube had not done enough to ensure accountability of the users that had uploaded the content.

Depending on the final outcome Youtube may have to pay out lump sums of royalties for these particular examples and open the door for many more!

A spokesperson for Youtube who stated that they took no responsibility for what their users uploaded said ”Today’s ruling confirms that YouTube as a hosting platform cannot be obliged to control the content of all videos uploaded to the site. We remain committed to finding a solution to the music licensing issue in Germany that will benefit artists, composers, authors, publishers and record labels, as well as the wider YouTube community.”

Back in 2009 GEMA again successfully argued that Rapidshare had not done enough with a court ruling that the organisation install filters to protect their copyrighted content (who now looking to have to filter ALL content).

GDD™ Review: STS9 at The Fox Theater Oakland 4/20 – 4/21 + Set lists

04 25 2012

After weekend one of Coachella, we were yearning for more music so we committed ourselves to a trip to the Bay Area for an excellent celebration with the electronic jam-band that is STS9. It was great to be back with the tribe of followers that they have garnered since their formation over a decade ago. After witnessing their late-night to sunrise set on the farm at Bonnaroo last year, it was certainly a different experience, yet equally satisfying, in the beautifully decorated Fox Theater Oakland complete with their “Great Cycle Spectacles” setup on stage. Please read on after the jump for the full review and set list!

Night One:

We could feel summer creeping during that Friday and there couldn’t have been a better way to end it than with a lively set from the cosmic group. With everyone in good spirits and excited to get the weekend started, the band certainly responded to the energy with danceable beats and flowing grooves laden with synth and guitar melodies executed with precision. Not to mention the unbelievable percussion from Jeffree Lerner. Our highlights of the night included an ever so appropriate cover of the famed “Shakedown Street” by the Grateful Dead, a moving rendition of their hit “Circus,” and the resurfacing of the “T.W.E.L.V.E.” which they hadn’t played since 2007. The awesome party had only just begun as we left night one with the comforting thought of embarking on another journey with STS9 the next night.

Night Two:

Saturday began with my meeting of a long-time STS9 fan who spoke of his not only good, but “specific feeling” for the night. The optimism added to the chilled-out Bay Area vibes and we knew we were in for another great one. With a more crowded floor, the dancing resumed with the great opening selection of “20-12.” Smiling faces completely lost in the music/reality-altering visuals could be seen all around. STS9′s wide-variety of sounds are brought out in every set, but I was impressed by each members’ prowess at their instrument. This was showcased when the drummer, Zach Velmer, performed a mind-blowing solo and the keyboardist, David Phipps, played “Piano Peace” with the psychedelic visuals of a human brain and falling particles as his backdrop. The tracks, “Move My Peeps” and “Vapor,” were favorites of the night, among the many other powerful masterpieces.

The two-night run of the “Great Cycle Spectacles” exceeded expectations and left me asking myself “when is the next time I will be able to see them again?” I certainly look forward to the many more times to come.

Check out a fan video from night two of “Move My Peeps”

Jonas Rathsman April Mix

04 25 2012

If Jonas Rathsman were slightly more consistent with his output of “monthly” mixtapes, his name would be right up there along side The Magician, Aeroplane + Edwin Van Cleef as the most hotly anticipated mixtapes each month.  But since October, he’s done an October, January, Spring and now April mix.  All fantastic but a little scattered with the consistency.  But who gives a damn, right?  Bottom line: Jonas Rathsman’s mixtapes are fucking brilliant.  His brand of deep, noirish disco + pulsating deep house give his mixes a darker + edgier sound that puts him a notch ahead of his peers on the coolness scale.  His April Mix is no exception…check out the coolness below.

DJ Shadow to release rare archives!

04 25 2012

The Californian born DJ Shadow has announced he will be releasing some unreleased tracks from his younger years!

The album is set to be titled Total Breakdown: Hidden Transmissions From The MPC Era, 1992-1996! and this is what the man himself has to say about it.

“I like to follow up new material with a tastefully-done archival project. As long as the old stuff is given a context and doesn’t overshadow the new, I think it’s a healthy exercise for me, and one that re-calibrates me for whatever new musical path lies ahead. I think it’s important to revisit where you’ve been occasionally so that you can determine where to go.”

The dug up material will be available on double-vinyl, CD and digital download on his personal website!

Brick + Mortar – Move to the Ocean (baauer remix)

Brick + Mortar Move to the Ocean (baauer remix)

Hello from Brisbane, Australia! Finally getting around (read: just procrastinating) to posting something since Glen is sooo keen on me posting (thanks again)!

Anyway I found this track from what must have been weeks ago now, after looking up baauer for this other remix he did (Krueger – Talk). I was so hooked on the bass line that I just HAD to look up the guy. He’s from Brooklyn, that’s all I know, but I was in love by the time I was like three songs into trolling his soundcloud (which I really really suggest you do, soundcloud.com/baauer). Remixes or not his tracks are super catchy – and Move to the Ocean is no exception. I even listened to the original by Brick + Mortar and you can tell this guy’s got that somethin’ somethin’..

My other favourite remixes from him include Abel – Girls, and First Aid Kit – Winter is All Over You.

Share and Enjoy: Brick + Mortar Move to the Ocean (baauer remix) Brick + Mortar Move to the Ocean (baauer remix) Brick + Mortar Move to the Ocean (baauer remix) Brick + Mortar Move to the Ocean (baauer remix) Brick + Mortar Move to the Ocean (baauer remix) Brick + Mortar Move to the Ocean (baauer remix) Brick + Mortar Move to the Ocean (baauer remix) Brick + Mortar Move to the Ocean (baauer remix) Brick + Mortar Move to the Ocean (baauer remix) Brick + Mortar Move to the Ocean (baauer remix) Brick + Mortar Move to the Ocean (baauer remix)

Sebastien Drums feat. Niles Mason – French Rules (Hot Mouth Remix)

04 25 2012

Our pal, Hot Mouth, formerly known as Jon Pegnato of LA Riots, has been on quite a tear since he has dived full on back into his solo project that he started in 2008. After receiving loads of success alongside Daniel in LA Riots, he felt the need to come back to Hot Mouth — creating funky, techy, fun Electro House for the masses. On that note, Jon’s most recent studio time has been dedicated to remixing the latest release from Sebastien Drums on Stealth Records. He adds a bit of fun Electro flair to the Housey original, making it dancefloor-ready for any club night or house party.

GDD™ Morning Update: David Guetta, Modeselektor, Flux Pavilion, The M Machine, DJ Shadow

04 25 2012

Good morning! Today’s stores feature David Guetta, Modeselektor, Flux Pavilion, The M Machine,  and DJ Shadow. Please read on after the jump!

Guetta Reckons That Staying Underground “Killed Dance Music”

A revealing interview with David Guetta appeared in the Observer over the weekend.

The Frenchman opined that the dance scene’s unwillingness to embrace its full commercial potential “killed dance music for so many years”.

Guetta said: “That spirit of wanting to keep this only for ourselves, and anything that’s successful is bad. That culture that goes in a cycle where everybody loves someone and they’re all talking about him, and then in one second, because he’s successful, ‘Ah, fuck him, he’s bullshit!’ What? But you were saying the same guy was a genius last year, now he’s the worst person?”

Something tells us he’s a little peeved that people have been hating on him for churning out mindless club bangers.

He also reckons that the dance music underground is dead and that bedroom producers have the ability to blow up more quickly than ever before.

“It was a subculture, it was a lifestyle, it was all of these things. But these days, it’s not really working like this any more. It took me 20 years to do what I did. Avicii, last year, no one knew who he was. Now he’s the biggest thing on the planet. You understand? It’s totally different.”

Worth a read then, if only to get a rare glimpse of what one of dance music’s biggest stars really thinks.

Flux Pavilion: “What I Do is Not Dubstep”

He may be at the forefront of the ‘brostep’ revolution, but Flux Pavilion isn’t fussed about how his music is categorised.

In an interview with Spoonfed, the UK producer said: “I say it all the time on Twitter – what I do is not dubstep.” He added: “I was never really part of the initial dubstep scene.”

The producer, whose track ‘I Can’t Stop’ was recently sampled by Jay Z and Kanye West, cited Diplo as an inspiration for showing him the potential for collaborating with pop artists.

“Diplo is a massive inspiration, he manages to get away with so much and still remains stupidly cool,” he said.

“He’s thinking of going in the studio with Justin Bieber – and my first thought was that’s going to make me like Justin Bieber more…”

Sounds like he’ll soon be a ‘belieber’.

The M Machine Builds iPad-Controlled Light Show From Scratch

SAN FRANCISCO — Out near the piers, in a warehouse where 1980s rockers Journey used to practice, the band that calls itself The M Machine is building, well, an M machine.

It’s a giant light wall in the shape of an M that flashes different colors and syncs with the band’s music. The sophisticated stage prop, constructed on the cheap, figures prominently in the storyline of The M Machine‘s new EP, Metropolis Pt. 1. It also symbolizes the three-piece band’s DIY approach to art and music.

“The whole M Machine thing has been about taking a project that’s been at the ground level and seeing how legit and big you can create it before you even launch,” said the band’s singer/composer/producer Ben “Swardy” Swardlick. “It’s got a lot to do with the idea of, ‘Well, fuck it, let’s build a light wall. Fuck it let’s make an album.’ Everything has been about, ‘Now that we have the space to do it, let’s see how big we can build it before we release anything.’”

Inside The M Machine’s airplane-hangar-like warehouse in San Francisco’s Dogpatch neighborhood, it becomes clear that what the band members have created in this open space goes far beyond an EP and a light-dancing M. Inside the historic building, they’ve essentially built an old-school artist collective where M Machine’s musicians-cum-tech-geeks live alongside painters, young professionals and other hip types who have found an affordable place to live in a neighborhood that’s quickly losing ground to condos.

The band’s cover artist works not too far from the recording studio and what everyone calls “the Garcia Room,” named after the Grateful Dead leader who enjoyed hanging out there. “I can guarantee you [Jerry] spent a lot of time here,” Swardlick told Wired, giving a tour of the tie-dye-covered room, which formerly served as the studio’s control room. (See the Garcia Room and other highlights of the warehouse in the gallery above.)

“The whole M Machine thing has been about taking a project that’s been at the ground level and seeing how legit and big you can create it before you even launch.”

San Francisco artist Casey Gray also lives in the sprawling complex — he’s the one responsible for the skate ramp on the other side of the warehouse. He’s been living here since the M Machine moved in during fall 2009. About eight or nine people live in the warehouse at any given time, with rent running about $600 per month each. (Skrillex, whose label OWSLA is home to M Machine, has crashed here as well.)

For Gray, who works with spray paint (among other mediums), the environment is ideal: He can have a studio in the warehouse’s former garage/loading area. He’s also got another studio and a woodshop.

“I’ve got a lot of real estate in this place,” Gray said. “When it came time to move in here I was like, ‘Wait there’s two roll-up doors? Holy shit, I could have a studio in there!”

Visual artist Chris Blackstock, who used to live here with the members of the M Machine, maintains a studio on the building’s second level. He created the sleek, vibrant-yet-industrial album cover forMetropolis Pt. 1, released Tuesday.

“When I was sleeping here was pretty much when they were making the first half of the album, so I was hearing the same eight beats over and over,” Blackwell said, adding that the experience didn’t stop him from wanting to contribute to the album’s story.

Building on Fritz Lang’s Metropolis

The Metropolis Pt. 1 narrative is a little like what you’d expect — Fritz Lang’s Metropolis is the main influence and the M machine idea comes from the power source in the 1927 sci-fi film. But the story, detailed in the album’s liner notes, goes deeper into a people’s struggle. Certainly it goes further in terms of narrative than the average electronic music album.

The massive, glowing M is designed to help the band tell the story during live performances (see it in action in the video below). It is made of 36 light panels, all USB-networked through 15 hand-built boxes. The whole thing is controlled by a laptop and an iPad running a combination of Ableton Live, Max/MSP and some custom software written by the M Machine’s singer and tech wizard Andy Coenen.

“Since it’s all just MIDI and since it’s all time-synchronized with the stuff we’re playing, we could do whatever we wanted to [live],” Coenen told Wired while demonstrating the baby it took him nearly a year to build and program. “Swardy has a lot of samples attached to his MIDI controller, so every time he triggers one of those samples, the corresponding light stuff gets sent to the light wall.”

It’s the kind of giant project that can only come to fruition in an oversize location like the M Machine’s workspace, which is co-owned by the stepfather of band member Eric Luttrell. Bad Habit Recordings‘ Gordon Brislawn, who used to record in the warehouse, still stores his equipment on the premises. The building’s de facto historian, Brislawn says there’s a spirit to the massive concrete-and-steel structure that allows creative magic to happen — from Journey and Jerry to Skrillex and spray paint.

“This is basically sacred ground for the arts in San Francisco,” Brislawn told Wired.

But it’s holy land that is always in jeopardy, waterfront property in a city with very limited real estate. Brislawn says the threat of the space being demolished to make way for lofts has been in the air for years, but the neighborhood has sidestepped total overhaul thus far. Still, new construction has been creeping in, and the America’s Cup yachting competition will begin right outside in 2013.

The building’s luck may not hold out forever.

“This whole area is turning into condos, so eventually it will get torn down,” Swardlick said. “But until they feel like the economy is squared away and they want to start building a new condo building, we get to rent it. It’s tragic.”

DJ Shadow Compiles Unreleased Archival Material

DJ Shadow will soon offer fans a peek inside his formative years, compiling a collection of previously unreleased instrumental tracks created from 1992 to 1996. Total Breakdown: Hidden Transmissions From the MPC Era, 1992-1996 focuses on his early experimentation on the Akai MPC.
