New: The Shins – “September,” Tour Dates

02 06 2012

The Shins have premiered “September,” the b-side to their excellent new single, “Simple Song”. The b-side comes with a charming lyric video, so you can sing along to the lovely acoustic number (if no one is watching). The Simple Song single is out February 14, followed by the release of The Shin’s new album, Port of Morrow, due out March 20th.

REC’D: The Shins – “Simple Song”

01 10 2012

After a five-year hiatus and plenty of side projects, seminal Portland indie rockers The Shins are back with a new record Port of Morrow, their first on frontman James Mercer’s label Aural Apothecary. First single “Simple Song” is really anything but – sounds like the band are back to the mixtape-ready, maximal twee pop of Chutes Too Narrow, with an added pinch of electro instrumentation (maybe thanks to Broken Bells?).

The band that changed our lives, The Shins, will return with a new album in March through James Mercer’s Aural Apothecary.

It’s been five long years since the band’s last release, Wincing the Night Away, but in that time, frontman James Mercer released an LP and EP with producer Danger Mouse under the moniker Broken Bells. Mercer and the rest of The Shins have come together to release Port of Morrow, a new collection of 10 songs recorded in Los Angeles and Portland over the course the past year.

The Shins have released the official tracklist and the Jacob Escobedo-designed album art.

02. Simple Song
03. It’s Only Life
04. No Way Down
05. September
06. Bait and Switch

KEEP YOUR HEART CLOSE TO MINE.

Now that Alex Winston is wrapping up her debut album and well on her way to super stardom (see below), one might wonder what The Knocks have in store for us next over at their HeavyRoc Music studios. Well wonder no more, as it's time to introduce you to the latest addition to the HeavyRoc family, St. Lucia. Arriving just in time for the endlessly bleak winter of NYC to give way to the long light of summer, St. Lucia is the sound of childhood holidays and faded photographs of faraway places.Inspired by his homeland of South Africa, his journey through the UK and eventual relocation to Brooklyn, St. Lucia's debut offering "This Old House Is Gone" plays like a lucid dream that you never want to wake up from, drifting by on an ethereal chord progression that recalls The Shins' "Sleeping Lessons" as viewed through the kaleidoscopic lens of Animal Collective's "Did You See The Words". A winning mix of heavily layered percussive elements, technicolor synth flourishes and tropical electro vibes, it's a little bit of Australia in our own backyard, coming off like The Temper Trap as produced by Cut Copy with shades of Empire of the Sun thrown in for good measure. So basically, dreams DO come true. Expect big things.MP3: "The Old House Is Gone" - St. Lucia [exclusive]
