MP3: New Holy Ghost – “I Wanted To Tell Her”

11 10 2011

We never thought we’d say this, but thanks Mountain Dew for hooking us up with this Ministry cover by a bunch of DFA artists! For real – your favorite hyper-carbonated soda’s Green Label Sound project has been blowing it out of the park in the past year or so, but we’re particularly psyched on their latest release, Holy Ghost!’s cover of Ministry’s “I Wanted to Tell Her,” with vocal appearances by John MacLean and Nancy Whang of the Juan MacLean and LCD Soundsystem.

Haunted Day

01 19 2011

I had a hankering for The Juan Maclean‘s “One Day” this morning, so I hopped on Hype Machine in hopes of finding a gem of a remix. I was successful, as Lazaro Casanova‘s “Haunted Dub” was among the search results. I knocked it down to 192 because I’m a gentleman, but you can pick up the full, dated release with remixes by Surkin, Marc Romboy, and The Emporer Machine at Beatport.

Shit Robot / From The Cradle To The Rave

11 08 2010

THE JUAN MACLEAN /// DJ SET

DANN KALTER & DASH (Rockets/Imeca)

Durante sus trayectorias, han tenido oportunidad de compartir cartel con talentos internacionales como: Ewan Pearson, Larry Tee, Dj Hell, Mount Sims, Felix Cartal, Yuksek, Brodinski, Lo-Fi-FNK, Delorean, Data, Riot in Belgium, Diplo, Partyshank, Justice, Mr Flash, Crystal Method, Tim Sweeney, Paul Devro, Thomas Von Party, Thieves Like Us (Kitsuné), The Glimmers, The Presets, Kim Ann Foxman (of Hercules & Love Affair), Datarock, Peter Hook (of New Order), Jacques Renault (DFA) entre otros; En su sonido podràs escuchar ingredientes elementales como: disco, neo disco e indie finamente mezclados.

PUMA (Imeca)

P. LANGUAGE & DJ SPUN

06 10 2010

Still carrying the brightly lit torch from the recent Harri show, Animals Dancing are doing it to us again, presenting two of New York’s finest: Prince Language and DJ Spun – and I must say, the flame will be burning mighty hot for this one. Taking place in the Mercat basement, the king of all dungeons, boasting a beautiful sound system and ample dancing vibe.

Prince Language (NYC – The No Comprendo – DFA/k7/Editions Disco)

Prince Language’s acclaimed remix work for artists like LCD Soundsystem, The Rapture, Lindstrøm, MGMT, The Juan Maclean, Joakim, Editors, Sons and Daughters and Armand Van Helden, as well as numerous re-edits for the mysterious Editions Disco label, have earned his tracks a place in the sets of DJ Harvey, Tiga, Carl Craig, Rub N Tug, and Gilles Peterson, and have made him one of the go-to remixers in dance music today.

His series of mixes entitled ‘The No Comprendo’ have been some of the most talked about mixes of the last few years. In addition to numerous remix projects, he is currently at work on the forthcoming debut album of Prince Language & The No Comprendo as well as an upcoming project with Liv Spencer (Still Going, House of House).

Born and raised in Chicago, Prince Language has been strongly influenced by the city’s rich musical tradition, especially its heritage as the birthplace of House music. Raised on a steady musical diet of tapes of disco and house legends Ron Hardy and the Hot Mix 5, Language began DJing at Chicago warehouse parties and soon found himself holding down numerous residencies throughout the city.

Moving to New York in 1999, he soon met Philadelphian DJ Rich Medina, and together the pair established the now-legendary Stoned Soul parties. In 2002 he formed NegroClash, which has featured artists such as Afrika Bambaataa, Juan Atkins, Marshall Jefferson, DJ Spinna and Larry Heard/Mr. Fingers and in 2004 the Village Voice named NegroClash the “Best party in Manhattan to dance sweatily to smart music.”

DJ Spun (NYC – Rong Music)

Starting his music career in San Fransisco in the early 80’s, playing alongside bands such as the Dead Kennedy’s and Black Flag, DJ Spun began his DJ career opening for Kurtis Blow, and from there went on to his now legendary club nights, and appearing at countless parties the world over.

In 2003, with partner Ben Cook, they started the label Rong Music to release their own style-bending, genre-blending music as well as releases from Mudd, Chicken Lips, Woolfy and many others. The label offshoot, Tu Rong, also releases re-edits and remixes from the classic Nu Groove label.

Spun has released records on NOID, Editions Disco and Watchawannado and his recent remix work has included James Chance and the Contortions and Mudd as well as collaborations with Liv Spencer(House of House, Still Going), Eric Duncan(Rub n Tug, Still Going) and Daniel Wang.
Currently residing in New York City, Spun’s P.S.1/MoMA’s prestigious Warm Up Music Series is acknowledged as NYC best Summertime Party with “Warm Up” averaging 4000 attendees each Saturday. He’s also resident at APT. and 205 club with Eric Duncan of Rub n Tug.

Support from Animals Dancing residents Otologic and Tornado Wallace. Tickets from all moshtix outlets, promoters and from the venue (9348 9998). Or you can purchase directly from this link. First release $20; second release $25. Game on.

And here are some tracks by Prince Language, a great array of his remixes and beautiful edits:

MP3: 33 1/3 Queen – Steal Blue (DJ Spun Disco Re-Edit)

The Juan MacLean – Feel So Good

03 25 2010

The Juan MacLean is the latest in a long line of great artist to do a DJ Kicks mix/compilation (the CD will be released on April 27th).

The good people at !K7 Records have given us one of the tracks for the mix as an exclusive stream, the track in question is the simply fantastic new The Juan MacLean track “Feel So Good”. Already getting heavy spins at WMC from the likes of Cosmo Baker & others, it’s a safe bet that this one will be destroying dance floors near you for a long time to come. Featuring vocals from Nancy Whang and a drum loop from the late Jerry Fuchs, the upbeat and sweaty dance track embodies the spirit of Juan’s mix: a love of classic house music with an eye cast towards the future.

“I really wasn’t joking in the liner notes when I said that in the six months I knew I was going to do this mix, I spent most of the time agonizing over the relevance of doing a DJ mix in 2010,” says MacLean, a cheerful neurotic who’s clearly serious about his craft. “So much about DJ-ing has changed in the last 10 years. It seems that anyone at home can make their own mix, whether they’re a proper DJ or not. Which begs the question, why bother putting them out at this point?”

“So at the end of the day I just came back to where I had started, which was basically wanting to do something that was representative of where I’m coming from in producing my own music, and also focusing on the current house music scene.”

Beastly Bits #42

03 12 2010

Well today has been a real doozy so far. I was kept up late by my landlords cleaning the apartment above us (rage!), I broke my iPod by dropping it while running to the subway, I forgot an umbrella (NYC is rainy) and I just sat down at work only to hear "RRRIIIPPPPP". Yep, my favorite jeans are no more…what with a huge hole in the crotch now.

That said, I’m sitting here with a flannel tied around my waist, hoping no one comes in yet, while I dish out the bits before running home to change. Ugh, let’s do this.

The Juan MacLean shares the art of remixing. Read all about it here.

Grum remixed TV Rock‘s track In The Air. We totally dig this and you should too. Yours for free below.

And finally, yes, I will weigh in on Lady Gaga‘s Telephone video later. I have a lot to say about it. So keep it locked when I post about it…all while wearing a new pair of pants. Curses!
