Who’s The Goose Presents: Jacques Greene & Boogaloo Crew: 31st March @ The Roundhouse

03 23 2011

A string of debut European dates were announced by LuckyMe candidate Jacques Greene earlier this year. It seems that Manchester has been lucky enough to bag one of these rarefied slots, where upon hosting Jacques' arrival shall be 'Who's the Goose', a secretive gander of up and comers who have been causing our renewable rumour mill to work over time. Being Jacques first Mancunian migration, The Goose Boys aim to make a comfy nest for him, so alongside some stellar farmyard antics, there will be burgeoning support from that troublesome duo The Boogaloo Crew. The Goose Crew have kindly allowed me to round off the evening's event, so I'll do my best to keep it moving through the early hours.

Montreal based house jockey Jacques Greene grabbed all our attention just a  few weeks ago, when the superb vinyl release of 'Another Girl' dropped on LuckyMe on the 14th March. Jacques' soulful renditions of garage laced drum syncopation and acidic chicago heritage, seemed to signal a well rounded conclusion of 2010's left-field bass explorations, where many new world producers had become lost in the disjointed footwork of this mangled genre. Thankfully, Jacque has rounded up all these flailing ideas that have been lost in the bass of miscommunication, only to bind them in unison - turning the half breed into a fully formed new breed. Be sure to check the digital release which will be synced with your auto cue on March 29th, with remixes from Koreless and Machinedrum attached.

Here's a little freebie of Jacque remixed by another transatlantic bass hopper and fellow American counterpart, Kingdom.

Stay tuned this week for a little Q&A catch up with The Boogaloo Crew, our longtime conspirers of all things worthy in the realm of Future Garage and Dubstep. In the mean time, check out this lovely little glory tune of theirs called 'Running Wild' - think along the lines of your personal all day parade in song format, then your locked in the vibe.

Later this week, all the set times will be going up too, plus a little remix from Resident Goose Roskin. Click on the Facebook link for more info about tickets and location in the mean time.

Exclusive Boogaloo Crew Radio 1 Mix MP3

07 10 2010
The Boogaloo Crew are still turning heads on all side of the bass genre. I caught their set at Gottwood, that built from deep and brooding 2-step to jumpy and party-starting grime and bass. They've also been receiving rave reviews for their other alias Dark Sky from the likes of Resident Advisor and DJ mag; if you haven't already picked up Something To Lose, the title track of which is a catchy slice of throwback 90s rave, be sure to head here. Their latest, Frames, is another memorable EP, flexing a variety of sounds and full of nagging hooks and animated bass. The highlight of the four track EP might well be the rattle and fuzz of 'Fly', but decide for yourself here.

It's good to see they haven't neglected The Boogaloo Crew, and there's plenty of new and older Boog productions in their Radio 1 mix. Most of all, I want my mits on that first track, where UK funky meets a jazzy, carnival vibe:

Dark Sky AKA The Boog-A-Loo Crew

04 23 2010
Our friends The Boog-A-Loo Crew have sent over their latest bootleg. Snappy, steppy snares skip, with urgency and fervour, all over Jose Gonzalez 's crooning vocals:

Jose Gonzales - Crosses (The Boog-A-Loo Crew Remix)

Their newer alias, Dark Sky (that's The Boog-A-Loo crew plus one extra recruit) have been receiving some serious accolades from DJ and IDJ mag, as well as some big dubstep names. Their debut on Black Acre saw title track 'Something to Lose' on an old school junglist vibe: building some rising, swirling female vocals around some hefty rave chords and a throwback 90s break loop. I (highly) recommend you grab this here (also available in shops).

They've given us a free Dark Sky production to post - a nicely restrained remix that centres around 2-step skips, constructing an upbeat rhythm out of fluttered beat patterns and a pulsing synth. Particularly engaging are the gentle touches to this remix, like the feather-light high-hats and daubed bass pads:

Mirror Mirrors - Change (Dark Sky Remix) [pelski highly recommends]

You can see Dark Sky playing at Trouble Vision on 30th April (buy tickets here).

Or catch them playing as The Boog-A-Loo Crew in the Igloo Tent at Gottwood Festival on the Saturday 12th June. Grab your tickets here while you still can (only 35 left - buy them here).

Exclusive Boog-A-Loo Crew Mix for FREE Pelski Night – only 4 days away now…

02 16 2010

The Boog-A-Loo Crew have knocked up a tasty little mix in anticipation of the Pelski Club Night launch at The Big Chill House this Friday (…remember to join the Facebook Event).

If you’re looking to catch The Boog-A-Loo Crew – and these talented DJs/producers aren’t to be missed, Drop The Lime’ll testify to that, having just signed them to his mighty Trouble & Bass imprint – make sure you get to the Big Chill House at 10pm to see their two hour set, something a little different from the techno and house Darkly will be spinning between 8 and 10pm.

The Boog-A-Loo Crew Pelski Promo mix sees the Crew on a UK Funky and 2-step tip (expect to hear similar things in Roska’s set), with a couple of classics from the likes of Geeneus and Bassjackers thrown in as well as some new, unseen material (Pariah’s unreleased ‘And Thoughts of You Still Cross My Mind’ and Fantastic Mr Fox’s ‘Brady’). If for nothing else, the mix is worth it for a sneek peek at the Boog-A-Loo Crew’s new alias Dark Sky: the mix ends with their superb remix of The XX, a beautiful garage-tinged track that’s strangely reminiscent of the warm percussive beats of Darkstar’s 2009 smash, but with the ever-comforting presence of the XX’s soothing vocal work. Here’s to hoping the Crew drop it on Friday…

I’ve included a couple of freebie downloads in the tracklist – The seminal funky banger Yellow Tail, handed out for free on Rinse FM’s 15th Birthday, and Scuba’s latest serving of ‘techno-step’, offered up for free by xlr8r magazine.

Boogie with The Crew…

12 28 2009

London’s Boog-A-Loo Crew sent this gem over a couple of weeks ago and I slept on it due to an inbox backlog I’m struggling to keep on top of.
It’s a remix of DRT (you might recognise the guitar-based Ratatat sample) that injects skippy 2-step percussion into proceedings, with a mid-way interlude of infectious, low-slung pulses of bass. A charming rework:
An older Boog-A-Loo crew tune is ‘All Green’ – blending a laid-back hip-hop instrumental vibe with dubstep rhythms and, presumably, an Al Green sample. They’ve aptly coined the style ‘liquid-step’. Addictive listening and one of my favourite Boog-A-Loo productions yet:
