How Deep Is Your Love?

New York City dance punk forerunners, The Rapture, are back with a new album, In The Grace of Your Love, after 5 long years. They’re most famous for their 2003 song, ‘House of Jealous Lovers’, which was a defining movement for the music scene back then. It was when indie music was gaining steam, bands like Bloc Party and The Killers weren’t even on the scene and the L.E.S. wasn’t super lame yet. There were long nights spent dancing in The Annex, DFA Records was spreading dance punk like an infection, and ‘House of Jealous Lovers’ was at the center of that. To me, that song is the ‘Marquee Moon‘ of our generation. It left an indelible mark on our youth and defined a sub-culture, particulary one that was shifting from hip-hop, rap, grunge back to rock.
The Rapture’s latest single, ‘How Deep Is Your Love?’, leaves behind the punk portion of dance punk, with the only remnants heard in lead singer Luke Jenner’s shaky vocals. This track is a pure house dance song, Chicago house of 90s, to be exact. With its punctuating piano notes, subtle thumping, cow bells and blowing sax, it’s a nice add-on to the band’s style and a stellar track. I’ve also given the entire album a listen, I suggest you do too.
