How Deep Is Your Love?

09 19 2011

New York City dance punk forerunners, The Rapture, are back with a new album, In The Grace of Your Love, after 5 long years. They’re most famous for their 2003 song, ‘House of Jealous Lovers’, which was a defining movement for the music scene back then. It was when indie music was gaining steam, bands like Bloc Party and The Killers weren’t even on the scene and the L.E.S. wasn’t super lame yet. There were long nights spent dancing in The Annex, DFA Records was spreading dance punk like an infection, and ‘House of Jealous Lovers’ was at the center of that. To me, that song is the ‘Marquee Moon‘ of our generation. It left an indelible mark on our youth and defined a sub-culture, particulary one that was shifting from hip-hop, rap, grunge back to rock.

The Rapture’s latest single, ‘How Deep Is Your Love?’, leaves behind the punk portion of dance punk, with the only remnants heard in lead singer Luke Jenner’s shaky vocals. This track is a pure house dance song, Chicago house of 90s, to be exact. With its punctuating piano notes, subtle thumping, cow bells and blowing sax, it’s a nice add-on to the band’s style and a stellar track. I’ve also given the entire album a listen, I suggest you do too.

Specimen A – Cold As Ice

02 13 2011

Specimen A's cover, re-rubbed, flipped and dubbed the whooooaaa out take on Foreigner's Cold As Ice is not new if you've been a proverbial blogdigger* over the past six months or so. But I woke up thinking about it, for whatever reason, and playing it gives me a perfectly good excuse to post a clip from one of the best television series ever. It's all below, and it's all rad.

Tracy Morgan and Donald Glover – Werewolf Bar Mitzvah (RAC Mix)

11 19 2010

The 30 Rock soundtrack was released this week and includes the score music, composed and orchestrated by Jeff Richmond, as well as special series recordings featuring Tina Fey, Alec Baldwin, Jane Krakowski and Tracy Morgan in addition to dudes like Christopher Cross and Michael Buble. But the real highlight is Werewolf Bar Mitzvah, as performed by Morgan and NBC's Community star Donald Glover.

My dudes RAC shut this shit down. No, really, before you judge, I implore you to listen to this song. It's fun, it's Jewish, it's a little disco tinged, and overall, one of the finest pieces of work I have heard all week. Plays: 23 and counting... (PS: I spun this last night on East Village Radio's Belly of the Beast)

"My manager, Harvey Lemmings! This whole premise is sweaty."

Brilliant.

Kat Graham – Cold Hearted Snake (Paula Abdul Cover)

08 24 2010

Someone named Kat Graham, whom I'm told stars in the show Vampire Diaries (never seen it...) covered Paula Abdul's Cold Hearted Snake. She changed up some of the choruses, and hey, it's quite listenable. And you can download it for free.

Last Night: Musical Selections on So You Think You Can Dance’s Finale Performance Show

08 12 2010

Last night marked the finale dance episode of So You Think You Can Dance. The results and winner will be announced tonight, but not before I weigh in a bit on the musical selections from the evening's routines, much like I've done in the past few weeks. Quite the scattering of new and old, with a little dose of the classics tossed in for good measure, and the festivities saw everything from a Leonard Bernstein tune to Kanye West's Power get the foot-moving treatment.

Overall, the show was solid, with the top 3 dancers (Lauren, Robert and Kent), performing with each other, an all-star and a solo. Nearly all the routines garnered praise from the judges, and it's left in the hands of callers to determine season 7's winner.

A highlight was both Kent and Allison's and then Robert and Lauren's contemporary pieces, but you know me and you know I love my hip-hop, so the dance done to Yeezy's current single is below in video form. So strong!

Now, a list of all the songs used in last night's episode.
