WALLY BADAROU

10 03 2011

Chances are French/Benin Afro-synthpop artist Wally Badarou appears on at least one of the albums in your collection that for a while you just couldn’t stop listening to and couldn’t figure out why. Working with Robert Palmer, Marianne Faithfull, Fela Kuti, Herbie Hancock, M (Pop Muzik), Talking Heads, Foreigner, Power Station, Melissa Etheridge, Manu Dibango, Miriam Makeb and even writing for the beautiful 1985 film ‘Kiss Of The Spider Woman’.

This impossibly funky ear-worm comes off his first solo album, 1979′s Back To The Scales To-night.

American Psycho, Talking Heads & Robert Longo

11 15 2010

“Is that a raincoat?”
“Yes Paul, it is!”

American Psycho cracks me up. I think that movie is hilarious on so many levels. Miles Fisher is an actor that also sings. Fisher does a cover of the Talking Heads’ track, ‘This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody)’, which I discussed in this previous post. For his video, Fisher recreates the main themes/scenes of American Psycho, pretty much perfectly, with a nice touch of his own humor. I love the vid, I think it’s so well shot, and it only helps by the fact that Fisher looks just like Christian Bale. It’s a good cover of ‘This Must Be The Place’. I really love the original, it’s one of my all time favorite songs and it has such great lyrics, one of my favorites being, ‘Sing into my mouth’.

One thing I want to mention is the art work in Bale’s character’s apartment, which is also shown in this video. All a long the wall he has large black and white drawings of men and women in slightly contorted positions. This is a series of images by artist Robert Longo, called Men In The Cities. It shows business men writhing in agony. A subtle addition to the movie, but it speaks loads to the theme of the film. Longo shot the music video for New Order’s ‘Bizzare Love Triangle’, which featured these ‘men in the cities’. As a best man gift for my friend Nitin’s wedding, Nitin got me an official print of one of the Men In The Cities pieces, it’s great, and hanging in my apartment. It’s the photo above. And I’ve always really liked the one below.

And for fun, since I’m talking about this song, MGMT, before they were MGMT and just goofing around at school, did a cover of ‘This Must Be The Place’ at a small show. I like it. Video and mp3 below.

PUNCHES

Here are two artists that shouldn’t need too much info on.
Arthur Russell was a cellist, singer, collaborator with Larry Levan, Loose Joints, Dinosaur L, Felix, Talking Heads and many others. Basically a prodigy in the late 70’s/80’s NYC scene.
This particular track is a collab with boogie icon Lola Blank. I still love it.

Speaking of Talking Heads, there’s really nothing new or rare I can offer you besides these tweaks of already perfect killer tracks I Zimbra and Born Under Punches. Just a tad more club friendly.
