CRASH COURSE IN SCIENCE & JULES TROPICANA

04 21 2011

Crash Course In Science were a post punk band formed in 1979 in Philadelphia. They avoided the sounds of conventional instrumentation by using toy instruments and kitchen appliances to augment the distorted guitar, drums and synthesised beats. Championed by local radio station WXPN DJ Lee Paris they recorded the single “Cakes In The Home” (with the B-side containing “Kitchen Motors” and “Mechanical Breakdown”) for his Go Go label.
This track comes off their 1981 release on Press records, ‘Signals From Pier Thirteen’ (also featuring the cult classic ‘Flying Turns’, heard on about every cold synth mixtape in the last decade). A deeply influential record, whether directly or vicariously, on both NYC synth punk and many 80′s European synthwave artists.

Negativ Magick are back in form with another round of perfected death disco edits.
I never thought Id hear a club ready Primitive Calculators track, but here it is. Sweaty, thumping, fleshy beats beneath hard visceral vox; this is just fucking mean. Catch these guys supporting Canyons at New Guernica this coming Thursday (1st April) here in Melbourne. See you there.
