It's just been confirmed that Robyn will perform Dancing On My Own at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday, September 12. She will share the stage with Deadmau5 and artists Jason Derulo and Travie McCoy in a collaborative mash-up.
Hooray for our Swedish chanteuse! Now kick dem boys off the platform and let her perform on her own.
Last night, I welcomed the Brooklyn-via-Denmark singer, Oh Land, into the East Village Radio studio. Not only did we chat about her music and her former career as a dancer in the Danish Royal Ballet, but we were given the exclusive oportunity to have the first official play and debut of the Savage Skulls remix of her current single, Sun of a Gun.
Now, we all know that I love my Scandinavian territory based tunes, so when you slap the Swedish skills of the Skulls over the Danish delights of Oh Land's original, well damn it, that's just about the perfect recipe to make me melt.
Treats for all this morning...you can download that very mix over at East Village Radio here. And as a bonus, you can grab both the Yuksek remix and the original of Sun of a Gun below.
Additionally, give a listen to the interview from last night's Belly of the Beast here. Adorably wonderful.
Fortunately for us, and moreso unfortunately for the artist, Robyn's Body Talk Pt 2 leaked last week, and unless you've been on a sans-technological vacation, then you've probably already got the entire thing in your greedy little paws. Hell, we do, and we're not ashamed to admit it. But now it's time to give a little more than my "OMG WOWIE ZOWIE" tweets and twips...further we dive, into the depths of the awesome.
In going back through a multitude of Swede-singer dolloped posts from the past few months, I noticed a trend beginning back in March, when clips of 4 new songs surfaced in a documentary for a cable station in her homeland. Three of those had already been revealed on Body Talk Pt 1, but the last, known solely as Looking for Love, was still left unturned and unheard. After the BTP2 track list was revealed and did not hold said song title, this beast's heart sank a little.
Enter the leak of BTP2 and welcome the song Love Kills; which caught me off guard because it is, in fact, that one song I had so desperately been longing to hear in full. It was in that moment in which I literally leaped out of my chair and squealed...completely taking me by surprise in the best way possible. Savage Skulls work the production on this glistening and gargantuan dancer, which we'd fallen in love with even when heard in demo-style in this clip. (starts right at the beginning through the first 22 seconds)
Yes I am obsessed with Love Kills. And to think...it's not even the best cut from Body Talk Pt 2. Nope, that goes to Hang With Me, Dance to the Beat or Criminal Intent if you're still itching for a toe-tapper, or the proverbial favorite across all wanting listeners, Indestructible (acoustic). Robyn, you are #killingme, and I love it.
Leo and August are back! The Swedish electropop duo, Lo-Fi-Fnk, have emerged from next to nothingness and churned out a new tune that will see a proper release later this summer. After having let out the video for Marchin' In back in January of this year, seems like the young lads are finally moving forward in the steps to follow up their 2006 debut, Boylife.
The Swedish duo's signature melodic sounds have been given a facelift with their return, with two glittery dance gems for their forthcoming single on Moshi Moshi due for release on September 20. A-side Sleepless blends full-on electro with the vibes of a 90s Ibiza warehouse rave to a perfectly pop effect where nostalgic sounds are evoked whilst the B-side, Layin’ Lo, showcases Lo-Fi-Fnk’s old school indie side complete with catchy choruses. When Robyn and Kelis announced their joining of forces for their one-two punch of a dance-pop bill earlier this summer, it was with 100% anticipatory fan-girl excitement that I began counting down the days to their All Hearts Tour pit stop in NYC. Last night's first showing at Music Hall of Williamsburg (2 more sold out shows at Webster Hall next week) was precisely the excitable romp and rad time I could have ever imagined. Having seen both artists perform prior, this super special double headlining bill left me weak, wowed and wielding a heart ready to burst with adoration and appreciation.
Opening the evening's festivities were Far East Movement. Although the crowd was still noticeably thin for the early set from the Los Angeles hip-hop troupe, they took the stage with more energy than I can recall an act ever having for a 7pm time-slot. Following their lead, London's Dan Black began his set with my favorite of his tunes, Pump My Pumps, which comes from his debut album, ((UN)). Near the end of his time, the room began to fill more rapidly, as wanting hearts were eager for the girls to get their groove on.
Kelis began promptly on time, and right on par with everything we love about her; from hip twists and body gyrations to the husky voiced tones she effortlessly lets loose, the singer commanded the stage with a sense of luxury and enjoyment. Far different from her show at Santos(where she stood behind the mic for most of the show, looking out over the audience), this time the native New Yorker connected with her fans and dazzled with a playful and perfect set.
For all that Kelis embodies as a one-woman spectacle, Robyn emotes the same strength in the fact that she is an artist who knows what she wants, commanding the respect she so rightfully deserves. With 3 albums due out this year and an endless promo regime on top of the current tour, the international star delivered a speech-defying performance in which she worked the crowd, showed poise and vulnerability and captivated with her unique charm and repertoire. Playing most of Body Talk Pt 1, the noted omission of None of Dem was quickly forgiven thanks to The Girl and the Robot, Dream On and a super medly with Kelis that included the latter's Caught Out There, Konichiwa Bitches, Salt N Pepa's Push It and Neneh Cherry's Buffalo Stance. Video of the combo-collabo is below.
Ultimately, the term All Hearts used as the moniker for this tour is so poignant, as audience and performers joined as one, with a love for the music, the passion and the presence of these dynamic artists.
Ok, fun time. Full gallery of images from last night's All Hearts Tour can be viewed here. Or you can scope out Kelis and Robyn's respective set lists here and here. Videos below include: Kelis performing Trick Me x Milkshake x Holiday; Robyn's take on The Girl and the Robot and Don't Fucking Tell Me What to Do; and lastly the aforementioned medley.
