Before leaving for San Francisco from Portland today with Mike and Stacy of Starlight & Magic and Ian Hicks of Soft Metals to attend the SF Beats In Space Holiday Party at Triple Crown, I got a chance to speak with A. Zabriskie about his upcoming performance at BIS this Friday. This will be A Zabriskie’s first manifestation since he went on hiatus from the Cult of the Midnight Sun party at Ascension. JG Wilkes of the world famous party Optimo in Glasgow will headline this edition of BIS with support from live disco group 40 Thieves (Rong Music, Smash Hit Music, Co).I was able to get some background information on the very mysterious A. Zabriskie and am proud to announce he’s cooked up a Disco Workout exclusive DJ mix titled Pleasure Together which includes the first public appearance of an A. Zabriskie edit. Download the zip file to embark on this 45 minute journey through sound to the psychedelic world of A. Zabriskie. The track listing included in the zip file.

A. Zabriskie- Pleasure Together DJ mix
A.Zabriskie was raised in the back of a souvenir shop in Death Valley, California. Forced indoors by the harsh heat each summer, Zabriskie killed time peeling through the record collection of his adoptive medicine man-turned-shop clerk father, often messing with the speed of the records and playing along to the rhythms with whatever was handy. Fast forward to adulthood: After a few years learning to deejay in the dives of Las Vegas, Zabriskie moved to Portland, Oregon, and took up residence at the ubiquitous afterhours danceclub, Ascension, with his late-night Cult of the Midnight Sun- a midnight-to-dawn trip through spacey disco, tweaked prog and broken funk.
Before the club (and the Cult) went on hiatus, Zabriskie played alongside guests like JD Twitch (of Optimo) and Prins Thomas. Equally at home with the acid-dipped cosmic disco, contemporary house, and transcendent psych, prog and disco records of yesteryear, A.Zabriskie is now in the studio cooking up a batch of bent edits and strange sounds. Zabriskie is also an occasional contributor to Monorailpdx.com, a musicblog. Expect more mixes, production work, and continued contributions to Monorailpdx.com’s blog from A.Z in 2010, as well as a return of the Cult of the Midnight Sun.
I love songs and videos about astronauts in space being lonely and scared. This one is especially haunting:
mp3: “Why Me” – Planet P Project
Planet P was a side project of Tony Carey, who in addition to having his own solo career as a singer played keys in Rainbow. In their day, Rainbow with Cozy Powell on drums and Dio on vocals were fucking awesome, especially the album Rising which I remember reading Lars from Metallica say was his favorite album of all time in an interview a long time ago. Say what you will about Lars as a drummer, or even as a general dude, the guy definitely is a pretty good tastemaker.

As you can probably tell I’m really getting into these Fabric Live promo mixes that keep coming out. This one is by London’s Disco Bloodbath DJs, Dan Beaumont, Damon Martin, and Ben Pistor. They’ve been hosting and DJing at their queer friendly party Disco Bloodbath since April of 2007 sharing the bill with internationally famous guests such as Lee Douglas and Rune Lindbaek. I love their spacey disco, 80s jackin’ house, acid, nu disco, italo picks and downtempo vibe. The Disco Bloodbath DJs play at Fabriclive on Friday, December 11th in London.

Scion/AV sponsored Japanese noise/metal/rock band Boris gets taken to the disco in these two excellent re-mixes by Optimo and Todd Edwards. Both remixes are giant departures from the original (I don’t think I hear a single guitar), but sound great! The Optimo take on the song is a cosmic disco exploration on the theme. The song begins with tribal drum beats and minimal droning harmonies then evolves slowly into a heavenly, pulsing, beautiful 10 minute electronic hymn. The Todd Edwards version focuses on the original songs vocal track, processing it with autotune. The back beat is a pumping house cadence sure to bring people to the dance floor. I love Todd Edwards’ fun choppy sample melodies and bouncy bass lines. Dance floor candy!

Edwin Van Cleef the maestro of disco and purveyor of vibe is releasing ‘Overtaken’ on the fitting Space Disco label come the 16th of November.
Already receiving some props from Radio 1 fiends Andy and George ‘Overtaken’ with mixes from Millie, FM Attack and Neo Tokyo is an aural adventure of classic 80’s glass-wave with striking chords and verbed vox.
Kudos Edwin and Space D.

Totally loving the new Memory Tapes LP, Seek Magic. Dayve Hawk combines his two side projects Weird Tapes, and Memory Cassette into the one sleek project, and the results couldnt be much better. Alot of this stuff has been making the rounds for some time now but its great to hear the final product. Ranging from spaced out epic disco, to uplifting poppy dream-wave, and even a hint of New Order (see the lush bassline in the second half of Bicycle). Also, sorry guys but the files are going to be via Mediafire or the like for the time being, our server is getting pretty full.

Finally got my hands on the legendary NME C86 tapes the other day (cheers Angus). This was the compilation, released in 1986 that defined an era, gave birth to the british indie/jangle pop sound of the time, and came to be known as a genre of its own. I do loathe NME though.
