CONGALOID002 : Seka – Heritage EP

12 14 2011

For the second installment of Solo‘s freshly established Congaloid imprint slated for release on December 19th, the labelhead commissioned the young, groovy producer known as Seka, and surprise, surprise, he’s from Bristol. Bristol seems to be recreating itself as a hub for some of the best dance music today. With producers like Julio Bashmore, Eats Everything, and Seka synthesizing this fresh sound and rapidly releasing original tracks, it’s no wonder why Pete Tong gave the city a huge shout out on the Essential Mix a few weeks back. Here’s what Solo had to say about signing the youngblood:

“When I have received Andy’s EP I was quite surprised. At the time I was spending some weeks in Bali, and just starting to organise things, hoping to find the right people to work together with. I wrote on Facebook about my future label plans, and wasn’t really expecting demos just yet. Only few minutes later Seka sent me an email and asked to check these 2 songs. I felt straight away that those grooves had something right, so I tried them both that night, and even tho they were still rough demos, they worked a treat. People were smiling during those 2 mini-catchy-swing numbers, so I was sold. Seka became part of the adventure, and while I hope that you are gonna play this record, I am excited to have him in the Congaloid team, cause his new demos are sounding really good too…”

Solo – Pumpernickel EP + ‘Midget Mix’

10 13 2011

We’ve been big fans of Italian-born, London-based House producer, Solo, for a while now. Since his original production, ‘Congaloid,’ was picked up by Dirtybird labelhead, Claude VonStroke, the man has only gotten better and better, and this Halloween, he’ll be releasing his new EP, Pumpernickel, on the Great Stuff imprint. Today, Solo was kind enough to put the EP up for stream on his Soundcloud as well as a fresh new October mix full of solid House tracks. Give a listen to the EP below and make sure to pick it up on Beatport on the 31st!

After You’re Gone

10 13 2011
A slew of semi-decent remixes of Tyson's 'After You're Gone' have appeared on Backyard lately. The pick arguably goes to Joe Goddard, turning in a rework that would sound right at home on a Turbo release. Over the yearning soul of Tyson, Goddard lays a gurgle of electro-tech bass that slowly unfolds into a more squelchy, acid-techno affair:

Tyson - After You're Gone (Joe Goddard Remix){192kbps)

Bonus:

Tyson - After You're Gone (The Magician Remix){HQ wav file}

Tyson - After You're Gone (Solo Remix){192kbps}

Tyson – After You’re Gone (new video!)

09 07 2011

Slayed. That's what we are this morning. There is no other solo artist right now who tickles our waiting fancy more than that of mysterioso Londoner, Tyson. Today, we've got his news single and video, and news of who to expect on the remix tip. Massive radness after the image.

Tysonafter

After You're Gone sounds eerily similar to most of the singer's small catalogue of cuts, but it's emphatically dramatic on slowed down vocals and tempo alike. HBF likens the sound to Chromeo meeting Seal, but we'll stick with our initial guts and make yet again the case for a Billy-Branigan offspring.

The video is below and Dazed informs us that Joe Goddard, Legowelt and Solo will all join in on the official fixes. For now, you can grab the single as such here.

In love.

Solo – DJ Mag Mix July 2011

08 02 2011

Italian-born, London-based DJ/producer, Solo, has garnered much attention from House and Tech House music lovers in the past 3 years, including Claude VonStroke, who picked up Solo to his Dirtybird label in 2009 after hearing Solo’s get-on-the-map track, Congaloid. Since then, the band member turned electronic producer has also been signed to Deadfish, remixed the likes of Underworld, Depeche Mode, and Wiley, and was commissioned for the DJ Mag Mix last month. Can’t wait to hear more from this one.

R.I.P INSTITUBES

03 17 2011

It’s a sad day for french electronic music with the closing of institubes records a fine label that helped unearth some of the most talented young producers to come out of france over it’s nearly eight years of operation and also help shape the french electronic music scene in the 00′s. Run by Teki latex & Dj Orgasmic they showed us the musical stylings of Surkin, Das Glow, Bobmo, high powered boys and para one, quite the list if you want an electro hoe down.

Institubes has had to close its doors due to losing too much money through operating costs, and a tough uphill battle with the bigger companies focusing on the who and not the music. In an ever changing and demanding consumer world it seems that brand, image and self promotion have taken top priority over the quality and quantity of musical releases these days. Especially when music is released at light speed these days it can be hard to find yourself in the clutter that is the internet.

Never fear Teki & Orgasmic are still putting dope tunes out through their sound pellegrino imprint, things are not slowing up for the boys, with many of their releases featuring renaissance man, harvard bass, solo, l-vis 1990 and plenty more. The full press release can be found over at institubes records. it’s quite the read. Below is a look back at some of the great tunes released over the years from the institubes back catalouge.

2003

The first releases were dope french hip hop from L’Atelier, La fête de la musique compact bass, string samples plus smooth french rhymes make this a pretty tasty track. (i wish i knew french)

L’Atelier – La fête de la musique

2006

Surkin released his most famous working in 2oo6 (one of the golden years for electro) ‘ghetto obsession’, you should know it by now its a peak hour floor stomper. 2006 also saw the release of Para One’s debut album Epiphanie, which definitely had its moments with some raunchy basslines mixed up with hip hop style beats break this album up from being just another electro album.

Surkin – Ghetto Obsession

Para One – Midnight Swim

2008

Bobmo & Surkin teamed up to bring us the collaboration project ‘high powered boys‘ releasing the double sided ‘sounds of cain’ which included the monster club hit ‘hoes get down’. 08 also saw the release of dj orgasmic’s six pack anthem featuring teki latex spiting hot fire over electro hip hop cuts makes for a pretty rad offering.

high powered boys – Hoes get down

orgasmic – six pack anthem

2010

Having released plenty of tunes on institubes over the years das glow was one of the last artists to put out tracks with his phase IV EP, acid house inspired techno coupled to driving bass lines, great for taking things deep.

das glow – jerrycan

Rest in peace institubes, you will be missed. Be sure to scope out institubes back catalouge over at discogs

Peanut Butter Jelly Time?

02 26 2011
What with all our new writers, I've been a little quiet of late. Here's a few tracks I should've posted a while ago. They mostly fit into the ubiquitous Exploited/MadeToPlay/Jackmode camp:

Exploited Records' new-kid-on-the block Joyce Muniz has put together a lovely, breezy house edit of a Dusty Sprinfield classic. A chipper rhythm and light bongo drums make it easy listening, but it has that tech-house edge that could earn it a place on the deeper, more discerning dancefloors:

Joyce Muniz - Spooky Dusty [pelski highly recommends]

A couple of months old this one, but it's really grown on me. Solo goes for some organic, satisfyingly raw percussion coupled with more of his trademark exotic, carnival vibes:

Solo vs Vega - The Love Ritual [pelski highly recommends]
Solo aka Stefano Ritteri

Homework  turned a lot of heads in 2010 with their 'Fissa Tune EP' and now they're doing the same with 'Hudson Square' - their most interesting release to date. The Dutch duo are handing out a bootleg, in much the same vein as Joyce Muniz' freebie above, but this time touching-up Lenny Kravitz' 'I Belong To You'. Deep Latin percussion and a spatter of guitar help retain the original's suitably cheesy vibe:

Homework - Lenny

They're also kindly handing out their remix of Art Nouveaue's 'Paradise'. It's a lumbering exotic number, with a stripped-back tempo, a seductive flute snakes throughout the track amidst the soft roll of bass-pads:

Art Nouveau - Paradise (Homework Remix)

Darkly posted on the fun housey flexes of Jumping Back Slash a while back - I believe JBS coined his musical genre as 'afrotronical space music'...I have a blogger's sixth sense that as a name it may not take off quite like 'Nu Rave' or 'Fidget' did... Well, they've got Kwaito rework of an a deliciously sleazy r'n'b classic. He's also got a remix of Adele's glorious 'Rolling In The Deep' here. Although I'm not sure any of the Adele remixes can do justice to the original - no, not even that offered up by the increasingly unavoidable Jamie XX...

Jumping Back Slash - Heard It All Before (JBS Simba Zombo Relick)

'Peanut Butter Jelly Time' - originally an advert catchphrase I believe - has certainly had its fair share of quest appearances in club culture. It's popped up in numerous b-more bangers and now Claude Von Stroke and Christian Martin gives it a quirky ghetto-tech rework, all jumpy beats and fizzing bass:

Claude VonStroke & Christian Martin - Peanut Butter Jelly Time

Worthy remixes techno deity Juan Atkins on Scion A/V's latest free EP, working it into a Cumbia-laced bouncer:

Juan Atkins - Marz (Worthy Remix)

Bonus: Doctor Dru & Adana Twins - Juicy Fruit (Calm Down Winter Bootleg)

The Dirt 22 Featuring Danger, Strip Steve, Jesse Voorn, Fazhands & Skream

01 22 2011

Big ups to our reader submitted GDD babe of the week!

After a short hiatus for the festive season, we’re back to bring you the first Dirt of 2011! Starting the year off strong, this week we’ve a fresh 14 in store, accumulating some of the hottest tracks in tropical tech, disco-house, electro and dubstep. Fear not Dirty Dancers, we will indeed be back with another helping next week. Whether it lands on a Wednesday or Saturday is up to the powers that be, but feel free to stick your oar in by voicing your thoughts on our facebook page and the comments section below.

Without further ado, it gives me great pleasure to dish The Dirt, number 22…

• .zip file (all 14 tracks)

Nero – Me & You (Danger Remix) ✓+
Kicking things off, Danger has unleashed a monster take on Nero‘s ‘Me & You’, a big dubstep track in it’s own right, I’m an even bigger fan of this remix than the original. It’s both heavy & laid back, so bump it and bliss out.

Eli Escobar – Love Thing Pt. 2 (DJ Mehdi Club Mix)
New Yorker Eli Escobar dropped his Love Thing Remixes EP on New Years Eve. A groovy five track with remixes from Runaway, Mike Simonetti, & a VIP from Escobar himself. Big fan of the Mehdi track on there, which features vocals from Amanda Blank.

Carte Blanche – Do! Do! Do! (Strip Steve Jacked Up Remix)
One DJ Mehdi track followed by another, this time via his sideproject with Riton. Boy Noize Recs‘ Strip Steve has a go at this catchy Carte Blanche original. If you’re a fan of Strip Steve’s sound, I recommend checking out ‘Calcium‘, you won’t regret it.

Jesse Voorn – Somewhere (Bass Kleph Remix) ✓+
Prog house vibes from the Stealth label’s Jesse Voorn. This has been a staple in my sets since October, and I absolutely love it. It gave me the same excitement that I got the first time I heard Mowgli‘s ‘London To Paris’, and it sounds alarmingly similar at points.

Amadou & Mariam – Sabali (Vitalic Remix) ✓+
Malian duo Amadou & Mariam have just put out a remix record that features tracks from Bob Sinclar, Miike Snow, DJ Aero, & Yuksek to name a few. Here’s Vitalic’s track on the record, remixing my favorite tune from their original Welcome To Mali album. ‘Sabali’ has been sampled a grip since they put it out two years ago and you’ll probably recognize it, having been used by Theophilus London, and Damian Marley & Nas.

Creep – Days (Azari & III Remix) ✓+
The very talented Azari & III have just remixed the latest single from Brooklyn duo CREEP. Featuring guest vocals from The XX‘s Romy Madley-Croft, it’s a mellow amalgam of Chicago house and indie-rock.

Christoph Andersson – Metropol (Original Mix) ✓+
A decent dose of disco-house with ambient vocals from New Orleans based Andersson, as covered by Jonah Berry earlier this week. Big tunes coming from him at the moment, definitely one to watch closely.

Layo & Bushwacka! – Love Story (Solo Bootyleg)
The original ‘Love Story’ by Layo & Bushwacka! was possibly my favorite techno tune when I was first getting into EDM. Solo‘s bootleg has been kicking around for some time, but I’ve been playing it a lot in my car recently. An early midget-house take on a classic.

Fazhands feat. Sam Wilkes – Press Play (Original Mix)
Melodic tech-house from a fellow Londoner, with vocals from NorCal’s Sam Wilkes. It’s the deepest groove on The Dirt, and reminds me a lot of KiNK‘s tracks.

John Roman – Sing! (Original Mix) ✓+
This week we received a promo from John Roman‘s forthcoming EP. It’s like dutch house with depth and it’s been getting mad support and play from the likes of Brodinski and LA Riots. Look forward to hearing the EP in full.

Momma’s Boy vs. MikiX The Cat – At Night (Star Eyes & Jubilee Papi Smurf Remix)
This frenetic collaboration from another couple of Brooklynites: Jubilee & Star Eyes, fuses a bit of everything: house, two-step, world samples, and undertones of UK Garage. High energy and not for the faint hearted, it gets better with every play.

Rusko – Feel So Real (Dubbel Dutch Remix)
Based out of Austin Texas, Palms Out‘s Dubbel Dutch reworks a dope Rusko track via 8-bit samples and garage basslines.

Magnetic Man feat. John Legend – Getting Nowhere (Skream Remix) ✓+
Skream’s darker remix of  sideproject Magnetic Man‘s new single with John Legend. This one’s faster and more percussive than the original, the single of which drops on February 21 via Columbia.

The Beatles – Eleanor Rigby (4Centers Remix)
At this point you’re probably thinking “yeah f***ing right”, and I don’t blame you. Together with the ‘Stones, The Beatles have probably attracted some of the worst remixes in the history of electronic music, and don’t even get me started about mash ups. However, this is legitimately the most impressive Beatles remix I’ve heard to date; catchy dubstep from Nevada based producer 4Centers.

So concludes the Dirt for this week.
Big love, and enjoy your weekend,

SweetFA

it’s time for tech: eLDOKO.

11 22 2010
Tom Elkington, or eLDOKO, has been on my radar since sweetFA did a post a couple months ago on Woodworm Blues, eLDOKO's debut EP on Monkey Safari's What! What! label. Since then, Elkington has been working on a few remixes, two of them I felt the need to share with you today. According to his Soundcloud bio, eLDOKO finds and executes a fusion between Jazz, Swing, Tech, and House, resulting in a unique sound that you'd be hard-pressed to sleep on. Grab these goodies and let me know what you think.

Extremely impressive take on the massive track from James Blake released earlier this year. Add it to your collection.

I love this track. Something about the vocals always gets stuck in my head and eLDOKO adds a little more magic to the mix. He was offering it in WAV for free on his Soundcloud, so if you want a 192 mp3 version instead of the giant WAV file, click on the alternate link (•).

¡BONUS!
Fantastic remix from Round Table Knights recently released on the lauded Deadfish label. They'll be coming over to North America this January so keep your eyes out for a stop near you! Pick up this in full quality, along with the rest of the massive Deadfish Remixed Vol. 1, at Beatport. It's $12.99 well spent. Trust me.

Many thanks…

The first ever Jackmode vs. Pelski clubnight was held at Counter Culture in London on November 6th. Those of you who followed our mutterings and made their way to Crucifix Lane, could have duly described the event, as an opportune moment to celebrate a jacked collective of global house music. A cause that this blog has continued to pay tribute to over the course of it's duration.

In hope of emanating a worthy sense of buzz factor, we conducted careful research to ensure the venue's blueprints were sufficiently grimey, and that an endless string of blog cleared mpfree's, mixes and interviews kept you entertained from the likes of Made To Play, Dirtybird, Deadfish, Jackmode & Phonica. With the help of these world class labels and heavyweight DJ's, the Jackmode Agency was cued to call in the cavalry from across the world. And so they did, through the aid of their elite force of covert carrier pigeons - bringing us Solo, Christian Martin, Zombie Disco Squad, Round Table Knights & Midland by boat, plane and train from across the globe.

We two bloggers of posts gone past, could not have been happier with the almighty line up that breached the London Bridge archways, and if the atmosphere was anything to go by, then I think you guys were pretty happy with the get up too. Through your support, once again the situation was made good. And I think it's safe to say we'll be back with similar antics very shortly...

I'll leave you with a video filmed by Dickon Stone that documented the course of the evening and the early hours. It does much better justice than my incessant rambling...
