Haute and Bothered

08 23 2010

I should probably start by apologizing. Not on the basis of not doing (ya that's right a double negative get with it) a weekly post of hip nu bangers, but for failing to catalog my recent endeavors into genres anew. A few weeks ago, bossman Jonah got at me to do a minimix for our good friends over at Hot Biscuits. I obliged (duh), and clearly wanted to do 20 1-minute long build-ups of super sick dutch car alarms that I zippyshared from the interweb...not. Actually, I wanted to do the opposite of that, and I think something along those lines was birthed. Go over to Hot Bizzies to download the other two mixes from fellow bros Tron Jeremy and Bones. And if you live in Miami and want to get down to get up, then the good people at OVERTHROW are throwing me a party Saturday at Cafeina because they were so hypnotized by the futuristic blips on said mix, so come show your pretty little face (directed to cute entry level girls looking to climb that infallible ladder of social hierarchy). One last thing, go buy Skream's album 'Outside the Box' and Arcade Fire's 'The Suburbs' because collectively they're better to anything you've been listening to all summer. Have fun back in school kids.

HARD-LY A PROBLEM!

08 09 2010
Survey says.... A FUN TIME WAS HAD BY ALL!

Saturdays festivities at HARD SUMMER 2010 turned out to be an overall success, with a great new outdoor venue in the LA Historic State Park. Even though the event seemed to be under-sold, it made out for an easier-to-roam experience with little or no mess of crowd congestion. The only beef I had was with the strictness of the beer garden, where they made you get a 21+ wristband, then show your ID again before you entered the garden, then after you left you had to rip it off and show them you did so that you would have to do it all over again if you wanted another drink. Whatever though, they had to be super cautious about everything given the spotlight of concern.

FESTIVAL FAVORITES: EROL ALKAN, TIGA, SOULWAX

Everyone put on high energy sets (with the exception of Crappy Castles), with new tracks dropping left and right. The radio Soulwax crew however, took the taco. Erol Alkan, Tiga and the Techno Tuxedos themselves put on extraordinary performances, keeping arms in the air and warming the breezy summer night. Erol owned the day, Tiga dazzled the harder stage with his tech-y touch, and Soulwax despite having their set cut short due to a late start, proved to be worth it all with their raw, live magic. Caspa, Skream and Benga all provided superb bass on the harder stage during the day. I can't complain about anyone's set, except for the over-production put into Crystal Castles stage performance with such horrible sound. Figure that one out guys – definitely not worthy to be deemed the second headliner. But to end on a positive note, the festival went exceptionally well for only going til midnight! Cheers!

AND NOW, SOME HARD TUNAGE FROM THE FEST:

Erol Alkan and Tiga himself killed it with their crowds, look out for this monster.

Erol also dropped this new slammer, groove with it.

The Twelves pumped this early under the hot sun, great for every summer set.

Off Tim Healey's August Mix, HARD worthy and a must have right meow.

Free Dubs

08 06 2010
With increasing amounts of free music being distributed legitimately via social networking sites, yesterday it was Rusko's turn to drop the second installment of his Lost Dubs via twitter. The pack of dubs features five tracks including collabs with Skream and Clipz (a guy who also goes by the name of Redlight). My picks from the bunch are:

Here's the full zip of all five:

Another handy dubstep freebie from this week was Joker's remix of Professor Green and Lily Allen. Green & Allen were already covering the SOS Band's 'Just Be Good To Me', a track that blew up in the early 90s when Norman Cook aka Fatboy Slim released it via his side-project Beats International. This one sees Joker providing a grimey bass-heavy rendition of the original, and is worth giving some play:

LISTEN: Six New Daft Punk Songs from ‘Tron: Legacy”

As you may or may not have known, Disney is finally releasing a sequel to 1982′s seminal film Tron (watch trailer below). One of my favorite things about the original Tron, was it’s estimable score, composed by avant-garde electronic musician Wendy Carlos, who also scored films like The Clockwork Orange and The Shining. It’s really fitting then, to have a duo as prolific and influential as Daft Punk to score Tron: Legacy. (Continue Reading)

NEW: Arcade Fire – “Rococo”

Over the weekend, ’s immense third full-length album, The Suburbs, it the internet illegitimately to the cheer of scores of fans. For those who choose not to chase leaks around, or simply don’t know how about them, Radio 1′s Zane Lowe premiered another track off Suburbs — “Rococo” — to further whet your appetite. NEW: Skream x La Roux – “Finally”

Skream turned many onto his ghostly dubstep world with his prodigious remix of La Roux’s “In For The Kill” (still one of my favorite dubstep remixes ever), and the young dubstep wizard and a La Roux have — you will pardon the pun — “Finally” joined forces again. (Continue reading to listen)
