School is Cool – Warpaint

02 01 2012

Splash of 80′s grandeur are sprinkled through out, and reminiscent of bands such as the Sparks.  Excellent combination of electronic pop and rock.

DROP THE LIME – WINTER AFTERHOURS MIX

01 08 2012

This past Friday we had the whole Trouble & Bass crew take over CONTROL @ The Avalon, led by head honcho Luca Venezia aka Drop The Lime. If you missed this earlier this week like I did, Luca released a Winter Afterhours mix thats simply the cat’s meow. Packed with vintage styles of rock, electronic, blues, and reggae blended to create “house for the drive home.” Great for background music (when you wanna leave something on in your room, ya know) and definitely a cool change of pace for the Brooklyn badman.

Covercentric: Veronica Falls For Eurythmics

01 05 2012

A cheery bunch Veronica Falls ain’t. The UK indie band is known for their gloom-laden, gothic lo-fi guitar-pop, and their self-titled debut album released last year makes great music for cold, grey days. They carry their aesthetics well on this fantastic cover of Eurythmics‘ 1986 hit “Thorn In My Side”. Released on a limited covers 12″, it’s a cleverly reimagined version of the original, with which I wasn’t familiar before hearing their version. Their rather bleak-sounding take hints at a sense of desperation beneath the kiss-off bravado. What I like about Veronica Falls is that they do not forget the tunes and harmonies. Do check out their own songs if you have the time, they’re so underrated.

Animal Heart – Miami

12 07 2011

Set to thunderous beats and rock infused rhythms is a story of a woman who travels to Miami to purposely get lost in the crowd, but the protagonist is following her none the less since his heart aches for more.

Reminds me of She Wants Revenge, but with an arena type sound.

Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin

12 01 2011

SSLYBY are by far one of my favourite Polyvinyl artists. Resonating from Springfield Missouri, the group started when Philip Dickey and John Robert Cardwell met in 2002 during their freshman year of college. After releasing their own split EP in 2004, they signed to Polyvinyl Records some time later in June 2006.

You won’t want to miss these guys @ The Biltmore Monday, December 5th… we know Winnie won’t.

Enjoy their track, Yellow Missing Sings, from their recent album “Tape Club”.

Alabama Shakes

11 30 2011

southern rock // soul

Sothern rock bursting with soul! Alabama Shakes amplify my love for music. Their powerful groove and vigorous energy makes me a little less sad about great 60′s acts I was born too late to see live. Janis Joplin meets Nina Simone rocking out with The Black Keys, shedding gleams of hope to shake loose dusty spirits.

Turn it up.
