It really is time for commercial dance with Calvin Harris named the UK’s #1 singwriter in-front of Bruno Mars, Adele, Ed Sheeran and Stargate.

The “Bounce” and “Feel So Close” producer clinched the coveted top spot by collaboration with lady-about town Rihanna, on “We Found Love”.

Calvin has already had a big year heading downunder for Shore Thing and the Summadazye National Festival.

Harris and Rihanna have announced plans to play a charity gig in Los Angeles on February 12 in aid of the Children’s Orthopaedic Centre.

Deadmau5, Rihanna to perform at Grammy-week benefit gig

Deadmau5, Rihanna, Calvin Harris and Sebastian Ingrosso of Swedish House Mafia have teamed for a special one-off benefit show at the House of Blues on Grammy night.

Roc Nation and the Three Six Zero Group are partnering for the Feb. 12 charity show, which also includes Scottish House music DJ-producer Chris Lake and electronic producer Michael Woods. Rihanna is also slated to hit the Grammy stage with Coldplay earlier that night.

Proceeds for the show will go to the Children’s Orthopaedic Center and the Mark Taper–Johnny Mercer Artists Program at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. 

Tickets will set you back $1,000 (it’s for a good cause!) and go on sale Tuesday at 5 p.m. via Live Nation.

Visionquest headline the Last Resort in Miami

Liaison Artists, Embrace, Safe and Beatsme have teamed up for an all day party in Miami called The Last Resort.

The event should fill at least part of the Sunday School-shaped hole in this year’s schedule. Taking place on the final Sunday of WMC, it will host DJs and live acts all day and night at Villa 221, a multi-purpose venue in downtown Miami. More than a dozen names have been confirmed, including Maya Jane Coles, Soul Clap, Magda, Maceo Plex and DJ Three. Visionquest and Wolf + Lamb are on the bill as well, along with some of the newer artists that have appeared on their labels: PillowTalk, Footprintz and Aquarius Heaven, all playing live. Lee Curtiss will play live too. The whole things runs from 7:00 AM until well past sundown.

Crystal Castles: Third Album (Finally) In The Works

Good news, fellow Crystal Castles fans—the gloomy electronic duo are reportedly preparing to begin work on their next studio album, their first since 2010′s fantastic self-titled album. (Not to be confused with, you know, their 2008 eponymous debut. I’m not a betting man by nature, but I’d say it’s safe to presume that their next album could potentially be titled Crystal Castles… possibly maybe.)

In a new interview with the NME, producer/multi-instrumentalist Ethan Kath reveals that he and singer Alice Glass are headed to Croatia this next month to begin work on the next batch of songs. “We never do meaningless,” he boasts. “Every song we write is bleak. We don’t want anything else.” (via Pitchfork)

Sounds like the Crystal Castles I remember, all right.

Kath promises the untitled (it’s definitely gonna be called Crystal Castles though, you wait and see) album will drop “sometime” this summer. Start smearing mascara all over your face now.

Rave Promoters’ Alleged Under-the-Table Cash Payments to Union Hands at L.A. Coliseum Probed by FBI — Source

The FBI is looking into allegations that millions of dollars in under-the-table cash payments were made by rave promoters and other exhibitors to union hands working events at the troubled L.A. Coliseumand its sister venue, the Sports Arena.

FBI agents in recent weeks have contacted rave organizers as part of its investigation, the Weekly learned today.

This comes as the Los Angeles Times reported that …

… U.S. Department of Labor was investigating the alleged cash payoffs.

The Weekly broke the story that as much as $2.5 million in cash — sans taxes and benefits — had been paid to International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) stagehands at the L.A. Coliseum and Sports Arena in recent years. We filed California Public Information Act requests regarding the matter last year.

The under-the-table remittance reports inspired the publicly run Coliseum to pile on new accusations to a civil lawsuit against its former top managers and the rave promoters, who allegedly engaged in a conspiracy of side payments and benefits that enriched them at the taxpayers’ expense.

One source, however, alleged to us that the alleged cash payments to union hands, which the Times says was done via $100 bills in suitcases, was a shakedown of exhibitors by a union boss.

Others, however, have painted the union as a victim, noting that benefits and tax liabilities have been lost if these allegations are true. City Controller Wendy Greuel told us previously that “IATSE clearly followed the rules on so many levels.”

Deanne Amaden, spokeswoman for the U.S. Department of Labor, told the Weekly that …

… this is one of these situations where we can neither confirm nor deny we’re doing an investigation.

The Times says the payments were for stagehands who worked …

… rave concerts, Cinco de Mayo performances, a mixed martial arts production and a Lakers NBA championship celebration, among other Coliseum bookings.

Rusko & Cypress Hill making joint dubstep EP

Barely one month into 2012, “We’re Making A Dubstep Record” looks set to remain popular music’s bumper sticker for the foreseeable future. The latest act to get in on the act is L.A. stoner crew Cypress Hill, who have recruited hyperactive bass star Rusko to help them make a new five-song EP that’s heavy on the wubbs. Cypress X Rusko is set for an early-April release, and you can check out a preview Roll It, Light It below.

“This is one of those styles that we felt doing with Rusko would be a great match,” the group’s mouthpiece B-Real has said in NME. “We’ve always been the type of group to take chances on doing something radically different than what people expect from us. So this carries with the tradition of us going out of the box. If it’s not something that we embrace then we don’t dare mess with it and this is something we fell right into the pocket of.”

Calvin Harris Calls ‘We Found Love’ The ‘Most Successful Thing’ He’s Ever Done

With Rihanna’s seemingly unstoppable “We Found Love” fist pumping its way through a seventh week on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, MTV News is elated to bring you word from the usually publicity-shy producer of the runaway juggernaut, Scottish DJ/ beatsmith Calvin Harris.

Harris is among electronic dance music’s most popular fixtures, and over the years he has cooked up, and sung, some of the genre’s biggest anthems including “I’m Not Alone,” “Flashback” and “You Used to Hold Me.” Last year, his song “Awooga” was among the more popular songs at Miami Music Week. It was followed by a stellar collaboration with Kelis on “Bounce.”

Still, even Harris himself recognizes the sheer momentum of “We Found Love,” and how far the song has traveled, the world over.

” ‘We Found Love,’ is the most successful thing I’ve done ever,” Harris revealed just before his resident set at the famed XS Nightclub in Las Vegas. “It’s not strictly a song by me, obviously, it’s by Rihanna. She sings it.”

“It was great to work with her,” Harris continued. “No one could have taken it as far as she did. You can’t escape it here [in America]. I’ve heard it a lot. I’ve heard it probably more times today than I did when I was mixing it. Which is a good thing.”

Harris has launched into 2012 with his residency at XS, commenced work on new music and just finished a round of gigs in New York. Still, recording “Love” and touring with Ri-Ri last year is a time Harris recalls fondly.

“The tour with Rihanna was fun,” Harris said. “Most places, it was two gigs a night. I was doing after-shows as well. She was recording her album at the same time as being on tour, so she was setting up studios in the venues and hotel rooms. It was a crazy tour, three months. It’s a very long time to be on the road. But it was fun.”

So with the success of “Love,” have more pop acts come calling for collabos with Harris in the new year?

“Ever since the Rihanna song did well, a lot of people want to do some stuff, which is great,” Harris continued. “That’s what I enjoy doing. In terms of actual names, I’ve not done anything yet. I’d like to [talk about it] once it’s been done rather than suggest what might happen.”

In the meantime, U.S. EDM fans will be tickled to know they are going to see a whole lot more of Calvin Harris in the States in the future.

Beatport’s New Remix Contest Platform Inspires DJs and Producers to Play With Music

DENVER, Jan 24, 2012 (BUSINESS WIRE) — Today, Beatport ( http://www.beatport.com ), the world’s largest music store for DJs, announced the launch of Beatport Play, a new remix contest platform. Beatport Play makes it possible for DJs and producers of all experience levels to use remix parts from original tracks by some of Beatport’s biggest artists to enter contests or use in their own performances. For the first time, Beatport, in partnership with sponsors, will offer the remix parts for free.
Beatport has hosted more than 50 remix contests over the past two years with over 10,000 remix entries submitted. Beatport Play is the next generation platform creating more chances for DJs and producers to get their music heard.

Nico Jaar’s Five Hour Set “From Scratch”

Nicolas Jaar, whose ‘Space Is Only Noise’ was anointed Mixmag’s top album of 2011, will perform a five hour experimental piece called ‘From Scratch’ at New York’s MoMA PS1 on February 5.

The event is a collaboration between PS1, Pitchfork, and Jaar’s own Clown & Sunset Aesthetics. The five hour performance piece will feature contributions from Jaar collaborators Will Epstein, Dave Harrington, and Sasha Spielberg.

Also included in ‘From Scratch’ will be a movement piece and video art by one of Clown & Sunset’s filmmaker-in-residence, Ryan Staake.

Jarr has kept busy as of late with a series of shows for his Darkside side project with Dave Harrington. See pictures of Darkside’s debut performance in New York here.

Before we get to Rihanna’s mixed-bag new album Talk That Talk, I’d like to rhapsodize a bit. Rihanna is the finest female vocalist in pop music today. With every new song she convinces me more. She can’t hope to match the range, control, or precision of her many accomplished contemporaries, such as Beyoncé, Adele, Jennifer Hudson, and Kelly Clarkson. Yet her voice’s timbre, the tricky and subjective aspect of sound that causes us most to feel, is in a realm of its own. Where their voices resemble the round, deep tones of a clarinet, her instrument is double-reeded, sharing the piercing, brassy (and limited) qualities of an oboe. In other words, she is a Billie among Arethas.
