GDD™ Morning Update: Porter Robinson, Swedish House Mafia, Red Bull Music Academy, Paris Hilton

01 09 2012

Good morning! To start off the week, I have some news for you regarding Porter Robinson’s Essential Mix, Swedish House Mafia’s Miami 2012 plans, the Red Bull Music Academy, and Paris Hilton’s house album. Please read more after the jump.

Porter Robinson Essential Mix on BBC Radio 1

Radio 1 hosts some of the world’s most notorious parties, and their upcoming ‘Radio 1 Live in Hull’ event will be no exception. From Thursday 26th to Saturday 28th January, the commanders of UK national radio have picked Hull as their destination of choice, taking over various sites across the city. On Friday 27thJanuary the Essential Mix goes LIVE from Hull City Hall as Porter Robinson joins Fedde Le Grand, Chuckie and Judge Jules for a very special night!

After 2011 Porter is a natural choice, having completed more in 12 months than some DJ’s have achieved in 12 years. Touring with Skrillex and Tiësto, releasing a Beatport-crashing EP on Skrillex’s OWSLA label, remixing Lady Gaga and Avicii and headlining his own North American tour, Porter proved beyond doubt that he is THE name to watch in 2012.

What’s more, this will be the FIRST UK appearance of his career! What greater way to make an entrance than with your first ever Essential Mix, in your first ever visit – all live on the country’s most influential channel.

Tune in live from 11PM GMT on Friday 27th January to hear Porter Robinson live on Radio 1’s world famous Essential Mix, and listen again for 7 days after via BBC iPlayer. For full information on the entire event, click here.

Swedish House Mafia’s Miami 2012 plans

As expected, there’s a good reason the Swedish House Mafia weren’t on the ‘Phase One’ line-up for Miami’s Ultra Music Festival. In 2011, the trio went up against Ultra with its own mini-festival on Miami’s South Beach, and they’re doing it again in 2012. “Masquerade Motel Miami March 2011 was one of the highlights of our lives, we simply had to do it again,” trumpets the SHM Facebook page. “March 23rd Friday 2012 is the date, Miami the location.” So pretty much straight after lighting up Future Music Festival around Australia, the guys will be on a plane bound for sunny Miami. While 150,000 bodies passed through Ultra Music Festival over its three days last year, the Swedes sold out a vast 15,000-capacity tent on their name alone (plus a support cast of A-Trak, Calvin Harris, Pete Tong, Dirty South and Armand Van Helden). It wasn’t all smooth sailing at the Masquerade Motel though. The Miami Beach fire marshal closed the gates of the venue at around 6pm, leaving late ticket-holders stranded outside. Apparently the issue was with the ticket outlet overselling the capacity, but that didn’t stop an avalanche of angry tirades against the Swedish House Mafia. We daresay those issues will be ironed out by the time Friday 23 March 2012 rolls around.

Red Bull Music Academy sets its sights on New York

Red Bull Music Academy 2012 will take place in New York City from September 30th through November 2nd.New York seems a natural destination for RBMA, which has previously taken place in London, Berlin, Cape Town and Madrid among other cities. This year’s event will be the academy’s 15th edition. No details on the program yet, though it’s clear what to expect: workshops, lectures and other educational bits during the day, and club events at night where participants share the bill with established artists. Applications will be available on the RBMA site as of February 2nd, and will be due on April 2nd. Have a look at this video for a refresher on how the application process works.

Paris Hilton to Release House Album

First, there’s reports that Paris is trying to learn how to DJ. Then, last week we told you Paris Hilton had spent New Year’s Eve hanging off the arm of dance music giant, Afrojack. Now it looks like the hotel heiress is bedding down in the scene.

Recent reports suggest Hilton is in the process of making a house music album.

Speaking to FHM, the Simple Life star said, “I have a huge passion for house music. It always has been my passion. I just haven’t been able to focus on it, because I have been doing reality TV for so long now”.

Paris went on to claim that she had been working with lots of top DJ’s on the album and that it would be “perfect party music”.

It’s not the first time Paris has delved into the world of music. In 2006 she released an album ‘Paris’ which was preceded by a single, ‘Stars are Blind’ which went top ten in 17 countries.

The song was a simple reggae ditty, channeling the spirit of UB40, if UB40 had been fronted by an internet sex tape sensation rather than a chubby faced brummie.

Paris added that she had been to 100 raves in the past year, heard every type of music and hung out with a lot of top DJs. Lets hope one of them taught her to edit the vocal out of this.

GDD™ Morning Update: The Prodigy, Julio Bashmore, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, RBMA World Tour, Deadmau5, RA Poll, UMF, Occupy Musicians, Burning Man

11 21 2011

Due to some technical difficulties on Friday, I was unable to post the regular GDD™ Morning Update, but we’re back to give you a great start to your week. Today’s news includes The Prodigy’s new album, a new Julio Bashmore EP, a Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike tour after-movie, a Red Bull Music Academy World Tour in London video, Deadmau5′s new 4D projections event, the Resident Advisor poll, Ultra Music Festival, Occupy Musicians, and Burning Man. Read the info and watch several videos after the jump.

The Prodigy: New Album in Late 2012

UK trailblazers The Prodigy have been at work on a follow-up to Invaders Must Diesince 2010, and an end to the hard work is in sight. While up til now the group has been vague about when to expect its sixth studio album, it’s definitely coming in 2012 (if you can hold Liam Howlett to his word).

In a Facebook post last night, The Prodigy announced its only UK festival show for 2012 – and they haven’t gone with one of the flagship dance weekenders like Global Gathering or Creamfields. Instead, they’ll take the stage as Friday night headliners of grizzled rock festival Download (the other headliners are Metallica and reunited relicsBlack Sabbath), “playin some new songs for the first time from our next album due later 2012”.

So, have The Prodigy still got a definitive album in them? While we await the verdict, fans can busy themselves with World’s On Fire, the band’s live album and DVD released this year. There’s no denying their power onstage, so let’s hope that’s channelled into album number six…

Julio Bashmore Preps New EP for Futureboogie

As the end of 2011 creeps closer with each passing day, it seems that producers and labels are all scrambling to put out one last single before the calendar flips to 2012. Add Bristol’s Julio Bashmore to the list of artists getting into the year-end action, as he’ll be releasing a new EP, Riff Wrath (artwork above), on December 19. Set to drop via theFutureboogie label, the two-song record is described as a “beautifully filmic piece of house music” that’s also a “perfect embodiment of Bashmore’s fluid modern soul and understated drive with a dusty haze of of cosmic strumming.” While that kind of fluffy language reads like pretty standard PR speak, Bashmore’s previous 2011 releases—Everyone Needs a Theme Tune, Batty Knee Dance, and “Father Father”—have been undeniably great, so it’s certainly not out of the realm of possibility that Riff Wrath will offer similarly high-quality productions. The EP’s tracklist is below.

Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike Smash the USA – The Official Tour After-Movie

They came, they saw, they didn’t just conquer – they unequivocally smashed it. The hottest act to come out of Belgium, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike hit the shores of North America last month for their debut tour of the massive two-nation continent, receiving a rapturous response from fans and rave reviews from critics.
From the Big Apple of New York to the sprawling deserts of Las Vegas, from the heat of Miami to the Halloween craziness of San Bernadino, to the frozen far north of Toronto and Edmonton in Canada – wherever the brotherly duo went fans new and old were infected by their trademark sound. The biggest house and electro drops known to man swept across dance floors during two weeks that climaxed with a jaw dropping set at California’s legendary Escape From Wonderland festival.

Following every beat, every build-up, every breakdown and every bomb across the country was a crack film crew dedicated solely to catching the action as it happened. And while we were teased along the way thanks to Dimitri & Mike’s daily tour diary coverage on www.dancingastronaut.com, the full Director’s Cut edition is finally in our hands, thanks of course to the power of YouTube.

With packed clubs, throbbing dance floors, eye-popping light shows, raw musical power, over-sized sandwiches, a bear for a taxi driver (we kid you not!), and a spine-tingling, goose bump-inducing entrance to Escape From Wonderland that bought the house down, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike: SMASH THE USA gives you a unique insight into the sheer electricity of a night out with Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike.

So whether you were there or whether you weren’t, sit back and enjoy as Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike bring you SMASH THE USA. It’s one hell of a ride…

Video Premiere: RBMA World Tour in London

The recent Red Bull Music Academy World Tour included all sorts of amazing events around the globe, but perhaps none was as celebrated (or exciting) as the stop in London. The latest installment of the ongoing video series documenting the tour includes behind-the-scenes footage of the RBMA takeover of the iconic London Eye. Somehow, RBMA corralled 30 different crews of DJs, artists, producers, and labels and installed them in the different pods of the giant observation wheel for a once-in-a-lifetime dance party. The entire thing was streamed live online (we were certainly tuned in here at XLR8R HQ), but this video offers a closer look at what it was actually like to be there. Watch it above, and, just to get you feeling even more depressed that you couldn’t attend, peruse the list of all-star participants below.

Burning Man’s New Lottery Ticketing System Provokes Outrage

Earlier this month, Burning Man’s newsletter announced a new lottery system for buying tickets to the 2012 edition of the the seven-day experimental arts and music festival.

It works like this: During a two-week registration period that begins next week, buyers pick a “pricing tier” and enter a credit card number. Lotteries are then held for each tier, choosing names at random. Since tickets aren’t sold at walk-up outlets or at the gate, if you aren’t picked, you might not be able to go.

Organizers call the new system a solution to last year’s ticketing problems. In July, Burning Man tickets sold out for the first time, opening the door for scalpers, who jacked up $360 ticket prices to as much as $5,000.

But the lottery system is already stirring outrage. Commenters on Burning Man forums are worried that they won’t be able to get tickets for all the members in their camps, and that scalpers will overwhelm the process. Long-time Burners, meanwhile, worry the new system will exclude those who have contributed and supported the event for years.

“People hear the word ‘lottery’ and it reminds them of taking chances. It’s really just a tool for managing the flow of tickets,” countered Marian Goodell, Burning Man’s director of business and communications, to Huffington Post.

Your first shot at registering for tickets goes from November 28th to December 11th. Only 3,000 tickets will be available in this round, however, and, at $420, they’re even more expensive than last go around. Eventually, however, 40,000 will be sold, which is more than for the 2011 event. There will also be more low-income tickets this year, organizers say, but details have not yet been announced.

“[T]here’s only a small percentage of people who won’t be able to get tickets at all,” insisted Goodell.

And the amount of tickets sold may continue to increase. Organizers are petitioning the Federal Bureau of Land Management to increase the amount of attendees permitted — currently 50,000 — to 70,000 by 2016.

Better to burn out than to fade away? Maybe, but Burning Man seems poised to become something totally unrecognizable.

New Orbital Album & UK Tour

Last summer, reunited UK electro duo Orbital unveiled their first bit of new music in seven years with the release of a double A-sided single. Now, they’re ready to expand their efforts into a full-length release, their first since 2004′s Blue Album.

The as yet untitled record, due out sometime in 2012, is described by Orbital’s Paul Hartnoll as “a kaleidoscope of everything we like about electronic music. But the biggest influence on this album has been two years of playing live, listening to old Orbital music. We wanted to make music that we would like to play live. It had to flow and ebb like a live set.” Below, you can hear an early taste in the form of the album track “Never”.

Never by ORBITAL

In support of the release, Orbital has mapped out a UK tour for April 2012. Check out their itinerary below, and stay tuned for additional album details, audio previews, and tour dates.

Gary Richards readies electronic music party Hard Haunted Mansion

DJ and Hard founder Gary Richards threw the first Hard dance party at a downtown L.A. warehouse on his birthday on New Year’s Eve 2007. It was the natural extension of his productions in the early ’90s, when he was doing A&R for Rick Rubin at Def American and when his parties drew Robert Downey Jr., Madonna, Björk and other celebs. But that New Year’s Eve party was the first tremor of a massive tectonic shift in music culture that has since shown Richards to be something of a visionary on the electronic music scene.

Gary Richards: An article in the Oct. 25 Calendar section about DJ and Hard founder Gary Richards said that the 2009 Hard Summer dance party was shut down by the Los Angeles Police Department. It was shut down by the Inglewood Police Department.

He now produces the New Year’s party, Hard Summer, Hard NYC, all manner of other Hard one-offs like the upcoming cruise ship DJ event called Holy Ship, and what many people consider one of the best parties of the year, Hard Haunted Mansion. This year’s fourth annual Halloween bash happens Friday and Saturday at the 54,000-square-foot Shrine Expo Hall and features Fatboy Slim, Soulwax, Skrillex and dozens more including Richards himself, who performs under the moniker Destructo.

In the wake of Electric Daisy Carnival‘s departure from L.A. and the controversy that continues to swirl around these events (including the Hollywood riot that ensued when DJKaskade played for the opening of the EDC movie in July), we talk to Richards about the state of the party.

To what do you attribute the resurgence of electronic music in the late 2000s?

I think that college and high school kids are looking for something new; they are tired of the same old generic rock and hip-hop, and they finally got hold of electronic music and realized it’s an amazing form of music and it also comes with this crazy party scene. The other part of it is the Internet; the Internet did a lot to kill the sales of music, but people can hear music from all around the world, which created this whole new scene.

When Electric Daisy Carnival left L.A., did that leave a vacuum? Would you like to see your events play host to over 100,000 people?

A 100,000-person event seems pretty hard to control, maybe we could get more in the park of 50,000.

How did you react when you heard an underage girl died from an Ecstasy overdose at the 2010 Electric Daisy Carnival? Do you feel a burden to defend the genre?

First off, I feel terrible. I have kids. Since I’ve started this thing — and especially after the summer of 2010 — we really focused on how we can do these events and make them safe. I just wish that people would view what we do as another event. There are other festivals where things happen: Over the summer, there was a storm in Pukkelpop where a tree fell and it hit a stage and it killed 20 people; that could happen at my event, so to categorize it with the music is not good. All of a sudden electronic music is the devil.

The bottom line is it’s where music is going and no one is going to be able to stop that, so I think the best way to tackle it is for everyone to work together to make the events as safe as they can be. If you see someone coming into your event who looks intoxicated, don’t let him in. If you see someone coming into your event and they wanna bring in drugs, make sure they don’t get in.

Electro music can be heard on pop music stations like Power 106. Did you ever think it would go mainstream?

I thought this was gonna happen 20 years ago. … What took everyone so long?

In 2009, Hard Summer was shut down by the LAPD two hours in. Were you afraid that this was the end of Hard?

Yeah, I’ve had never anything like that happen to me on that kind of level. The first thing I thought was: Let’s give everyone’s money back and make good with our fans so we don’t rip them off. It was a seven-figure loss; it was brutal. But I knew that this thing was special so I kept going. It actually was two steps back to go 10 steps forward.

What makes Hard Haunted Mansion different from the other Hard events?

We had Deadmau5 play in 2008 … and he made that song “Ghosts N’ Stuff” for the event. We had DJ AM, and he had on Thomas Bangalter’s outfit from Daft Punk [as a costume]. He did Daft Punk, Daft Punk, Daft Punk, I was like, “Oh my God, I am going to be in trouble, everybody is going to think this is Daft Punk!” And 40 minutes in, he took his hat off and [the crowd] was like, “AM! AM!” He told me, “That was probably one of the funnest times I’ve ever had in my life.”
