ACID WASHED INTERVIEW

02 14 2011

The kind folk over at Future Classic have veto’d us into an interview with Sebastien Telliers Label-lees and french all stars Acid Washed!

Was blown away but the thoughtful responses and uniques of the guys not just from a musical stand point but of a deeper kind.

Competition details to win signed merch and track at the end!

Ubbs: Name and hometown?

Andrew Claristidge: Lille (North France).

Richard D’Alpert: Paris (France).

Ubbs: We all know acid wash was big in the 80s, is the name an attempt at a revival, a bit of nostalgia or something else?

Andrew Claristidge: it is not really about nostalgia. It is more like a reminder. It is liked: “hey yo, do you remember those jeans we were wearing when we were 12 years old…?”

It is not about revival… It is about keepin’ memories alive and build up with those memories something new, future-orientated!

We liked also the technical aspect of it. Making something looking old even if it is new. Acid Washed sounds for sure vintage and really 80′s orientated. It is for us a big influence (and maybe not the best one…eh eh eh). The way they used in music ultra-high technology (at that time called sampler, synth…etc). They made the best out of those machine…

Richard D’Alpert: It’s although mostly due to my friend Jenny McFarlane, who found the name when we were looking for one:)! I guess she caught well the spirit.

Ubbs: What were some of your proudest moments growing up and musically?

Andrew Claristidge: we are constantly improving, it makes me proud. Musically: I am proud of some new tracks we just finished. It is a new turn for us. I think we reached a new level of quality in terms of sounds research… I am proud of a lot of things and it will take too long to mention them here … and maybe it’s too personal.

Richard D’Alpert: I have mainly doubts, not much pride. Maybe sharing great and true musical moments on stage with some of my most liked dj fellows like Kavinsky, SebastiAn, Sébastien Tellier, Romain Turzi… Spending time in LA with of my personal heroe, Guy-Man, half of the Daft Punk.

Ubbs: What are your thoughts on the current state of the music industry both commercially and independent? Are they sustainable in 2011 and onwards?

Andrew Claristidge: it is a great and in the meanwhile an awful time for music. They are loads of great emerging talents around and you can find via internet and modern sharing technology some amazing music. And for the rest… well… It is getting more and more pathetic. Commercial music is getting worse than ever.

Richard D’Alpert: The never ending agony of the majors makes me personally very happy, every day of my life. Their suffering is the price to pay for all the shit they did dear to release, especially all over the 90′s, thinking they will make always, always, and always more money. Stupidity eats you all at the end. I like what the boss of InFiné – a French label I really like – said in an interview lately : “we have to invent it all, and not rethink what’s not working no more.” That’s a good quote.

Ubbs: Whats next for Acid Washed?

Andrew Claristidge: we will be touring a lot and then as soon as we have time, we will be back to the studio and record some new tracks/songs. We are right ready with our new LIVE act, Anthony Burrill made some amazing visuals for it. So what’s for Acid Washed? WE WILL HYPNOTIZE YOU! :)

Richard D’Alpert: UK, Italy and Germany. And things I can’t reveal:-)

Ubbs: If there was a tug of war between you guys and Sebastien Tellier/Kavinsky, who would win?

Andrew Claristidge: us for sure :) Just kidding… That would be depending on the wind… We are kinda sporty… But quite skinny.. Anyway like Coubertin’s quote “The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not winning but taking part; the essential thing in life is not conquering but fighting well.”

Richard D’Alpert: this wont happen since we are not only label mates, but friends.

Also thanks to the awesomeness of Future Classic and Record Makers we are giving away;

KAVINSKY + BREAKBOT + ROBOTAKI + SAWAGII

08 30 2010

Kavinsky

KAVINSKY is back and about to drop his latest single “Nightcall” on September 10th via the legendary French electronic imprint RECORD MAKERS. We’re excited to offer you not one, but three remixes of the single, representative of the French-filtered robotdisco. It’s sensual, epic and romantic, exactly like you’d expect.

Produced by Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo of Daft Punk and mixed by SebastiAn, the track finds the spooky, distorted, zombie vocals of Kavinsky perfectly counterbalanced by the sultry purr of CSS’ front kitten Lovefoxxx.

The remix package for this release comes courtesy of secretive and emblematic figures. Kavinsky & Record Makers organized a remix contest which ended with 533 entries- the winners being Robotaki and SAWAGii’s remixes, both included in the digital version, as well as the great work of the funky new Ed Banger sensation Breakbot.

MP3: Kavinsky – Nightcall (SAWAGii’s Revenge remix)

The legend of Kavinsky is an interesting one – the strory goes that he died in a car crash in 1986, whilst driving his beloved Testarossa. He re-appeared as a ZOMBIE in 2005, with his 12-inch, Teddy Boy. Since then, he has shown up all around the globe, playing his music to humans. Crowds gathered to witness the miracle: despite being dead, Kavinsky was still alive. In 2007, he released his second 12-inch, ‘1986’. This is when his French robot mates in Daft Punk invited him to join their Alive Tour, and A-Trak put together an American Tour in his now repaired Testarossa. After rediscovering the world with his red eyes, Kavinsky retreated to his base camp to work on his debut album. Now, the zombie is striking back. After months of studio work on his forthcoming album, he & Record Makers have decided to release “Nightcall” as an apéritif.

To celebrate the release of Nightcall, Record Makers and Kavinsky are offering fans and budding producers the opportunity to remix the zombie vocals of Lovefoxxx and the lord of dark synths. It’s no secret that the track is one of our favorites of the year so far, and the official mixes have been **muah** perfecto. But now’s your chance to show ‘em what you’re working with.

NIGHTCALL

03 28 2010

Preface:

As JD said in a comment, we’ve been busy with uni/work/moving house/getting a decent internet connection (which I’ve nearly got in my new pad)/and life – things are nearly back on track.

Kavinsky’s new single ‘Nightcall’ is about to be released and features 4 tracks that represent a sensual and romantic vibe. The titled track was produced by Guy-Man (of Daft Punk fame) and mixed by SebasiAn, with vocals from CSS’ front minx Lovefoxxx. The package also features remixes by Breakbot and Jackson (who I’m loving deeply at the moment). Single released 5th April – grab it from good music stores.

Little Kavinsky info:

Kavinsky died in a car crash in 1986, whilst driving his beloved Testarossa. He re-appeared as a zombie in 2005, with his 12-inch, Teddy Boy. Since then, he has shown up all around the globe, playing his music to fellow humans. Crowds gathered to witness the miracle: despite being dead, Kavinsky was still alive. In 2007, he released his second 12-inch, ‘1986’. This is when his French robot mates in Daft Punk invited him to join their Alive’ Tour, and A-Trak put together an American Tour in his now repaired Testarossa. After discovering the world with his red eyes, Kavinsky retreated to his base camp to work on his debut album.

WOLFMOTHER WHITE FEATHER SEBASTIEN TELLIER REMIX

12 19 2009

wildthings

Wolfmothers ‘White Feather’ EP is filled with some highly unique and fascinating mixes. Featuring home grown hero’s Bang Gang, both Tiedye and summer synth master Burns they must have also shaken hands with the ‘Record Makers‘ Label having both Turzi and the boss man himself one time France Eurovision representative Sebastien Tellier all providing a range of mixes .

Sebastien uses some ominous building chimes and centered choir-itical vocals that sits somewhere around a hybrid of Birdy Nam Nam and your worst trip.
