It’s hard to believe the upcoming Mixed Emotions is Brooklyn production duo Tanlines’ first real album – it seems to us that their world-inspired electro jams have been around for years, on an assortment of compilations, 7-inches, and digital releases, which is, um, sort of true.
As if Animal Collective’s Noah Lennox didn’t do enough in 2011 – the man toured almost all new material with his real band and still found time to record and release a critically acclaimed album, Tomboy, under his solo moniker Panda Bear – he’s now reissuing a 4-CD deluxe version of that record complete with demos, instrumentals, acapellas, and non-album tracks. But don’t shrug this off as being just for the ‘heads – check out this acapella of album highlight “You Can Count On Me.”
Panda Bear’s expanded 4xLP TOMBOY box set is out this week on Paw Tracks. The limited (5000 copies) expanded set features all of the Sonic Boom-assisted album versions and Noah’s original single mixes, as well as instrumentals/a capellas for the DJs, plus non-Tomboy jam “The Preakness” and a gorgeous 16-page art/lyrics booklet. And if you still need more incentive to pick one up, 100% of the profits from the record will go to benefit the American Cancer Society. Here’s a soaring, hymn-like a capella version of one of Tomboy’s most poignant tracks — taken from LP4 of the box set — that sounds like it was recorded in an ancient cathedral:
Panda Bear’sTomboy is a grower. We loved it when it came out, and it’s still growing on us. (Tempted to say its “growing with us”.) One of the tracks that is growing a bit quicker than the others is the incredible “Alsatian Darn”, so naturally I won’t miss an opportunity to share it.
