The Big Pink’s “Velvet” was easily one of my favorite tracks of 2009 off one of the better albums of that year too. So forgive me for a second, but I have to comment on how weird it feels to hear this song Lykke Li’d. (Lykke Li’d: the act of making any song effortlessly sound like a Lykke Li song.) But it’s true. Lykke Li does an impeccable job of making “Velvet” sound hers. If I didn’t know better, I’d think this cover was an actual cut from Li’s latest, woozy Wounded Rhymes.

PMA is off for Christmas, if you haven’t noticed. We’ll see you on Monday, December 27. We will post up any breaking news, like jj’s new mixtape, Kills, which is supposed to drop tomorrow (Christmas Eve). But other than that, this page will remain pretty static. If you’re missing us while we’re gone, why don’t you open up PMA’s Shuffler channel, a continuous mix of the free streams and MP3s featured on this site, effectively turning PMA content into a mini radio station. It does all the work for you, just open up the page, kick back and enjoy the music. Go on, don’t be shy. Happy Holidays!

We love the Smith Westerns’ bubbly, summery new single “Weekend,” the first offering from January 18th’s Dye it Blonde, and now there’s a video to go along with it – a video that backs up the song’s breezy, youthful energy.

It’s no secret that the Roots and John Legend admire Arcade Fire’s socially conscious lyricism and humanitarianism. Their first collaborative effort, a covers album dedicated to politically charged songs, was named after the Montreal ensemble’s breathtaking “Wake Up.” Though their cover of the track was the first they recorded together, it did not make the final cut of the album, and only a live, video was available, until now.

William Shatner stopped by George Lopez’ TBS late night show to promote his new TV show $#*! My Dad Says, based on the popular Twitter feed (whoa). To prove that he’s a fitting candidate to play the foul-mouthed 72 year old Ed Goodson, Shatner performed a cover of Cee-Lo‘s F-bomb laiden sensation, “Fuck You”. Ha, now ain’t that some $#*!?

Can we talk about this song’s opening rhyme for a second? Over a beat that’s basically lasers, driving synthesized strings, and superfast drum machine, Nicki Minaj raps “I am not Jasmine, I am Aladdin.” Nicki just told you everything you need to know about her, her flow, her everything: she isn’t a hanger-on Disney princess; she is the boss.

The Decemberists’ sixth studio record, following up 2009’s Hazards of Love, will be mid-January’s “The King is Dead.” On teaser track “Down By The Water” the band keep some of the classic sea-shanty flavor they’re (in)famous for (those harmonicas! Colin Meloy’s signature wistful voice!) while working in some echo-y R.E.M.-style guitar while folk vanguard Gillian Welch provides haunting backup vocals –- it could easily be mistaken for something you might hear on college radio in 1992.

I’m not even going to go into Amy Winehouse’s personal life here and I’m just going to talk about her voice, because who has such a voice? Because we live in a tabloid society, we spend more time talking about Winehouse’s drug habit and sleazy lovers than that voice, because those things are more interesting in the way a car crash is more interesting, as we casually gloss over the fact that Amy Winehouse can sing like skinny white women cannot sing. Her first release since a Sam Cooke cover in 2009, Winehouse’s return to her music career is a soulful, jukebox-y cover of Lesley Gore’s “It’s My Party,” helped out by legendary producers Mark Ronson and Quincy Jones. Possibly the best song for Winehouse to cover, ever, it throws that voice front and center over big-band horns. Give it a listen below:
