The Hundred in the Hands’ Self-Titled Debut Album is Out Today via Warp

09 21 2010

And I approve of every word in that phrase...because, well, The Hundred in the Hands are one of beastliest more favoritest bands to emerge over the past year, and yeah if it seems like I'm making up words to describe how I feel about Eleanore and Jason's material, it's simply because I think I've already used every other word of positive phrasing to toss some laud and love their way. But let's get into it...their self-titled debut album is out today via Warp, and it jumps immediately to the top of my be[a]st albums of the year thus far. It's gonna stay there come year's end as well. Trust!

Thith

There's been quite the impressive media blitz from Camp THiTH over the past few days, all leading up to yesterday/today's official release date (yes, them lucky UKers get the disc a day early as per usual). The band spoke with NME about the album, and gave insightful info as to their inspirations for each and every song. You can read up on that here.

The Brooklyn duo also released a mixtape which pulls from all of their musical and artistic influences, and you can go give a grab and ear to that gem at this link.

Want to hear the whole album, in rad streaming form? That's right here.

AAAAANNNND, I'm pretty psyched, because The Hundred in the Hands will be live in the East Village Radio studio with me on this Thursday's Belly of the Beast (8pm ET). We'll have a nice catch up chat (they swung through the studio earlier this year with me to say hey and all that) and I'm even gonna give up the decks and let Ellie and J spin some of their favorite tunes.

100% YAY. Buy their amazing debut album here now. FYI, they are also playing Coco66 this Friday in NYC. More info here.

The View From Britain:28 July

07 28 2010

I’d like to start out this post with an apology, I haven’t written for quite some while. Vacation called me away.

Anyhow, I’m back now and I have got some real good stuff for each and every one of you.

To get the ball rolling, I’ve got a song from oOoOO, called Mumbai, which I found via an NME mixtape that they feature on. It’s kinda spacey real weird atmospheric music, I don’t really know how to describe it, it doesn’t really sound like anything else out there. I guess the best I can do is it feels like walking at night in some kinda weird futuristic world. Here it is anyway.

oOoOO-Mumbai

I tend to associate Mylo with summery party house, but his remix of Robyn‘s Don’t Fucking Tell Me What To Do with Sharooz is a total departure from that style. It sounds far more menacing and like it could have been in a Tarantino movie.

Robyn – Don’t Fucking Tell Me What To Do (Mylo & Sharooz Mix)

Next up is one of my favorite tracks of 2010 so far. It was pretty good when Band of Horses did it, but Cee-Lo Green‘s version of Nobody’s Gonna Love You is something else entirely, just generally amazing all round, from the contrast of the vocals with the bassy instrumental to the soulfullness of his voice.

Cee-Lo Green-No One’s Gonna Love You

When I did my post on grime I left out Devlin, because I didn’t really know anything about him. Since then I’ve seen him, and I still wasn’t overly convinced by him. However, his new single Brainwashed has landed at my door and changed my mind. I am now a Devlin convert, and you will be too if you listen to this excellent track.

Delvin – Brainwashed

Next up comes dubstep. For a while, Brit school graduate Katy B has been a featuring vocalist on numerous tracks. Well, she’s now gone solo and she’s on a mission for success, as she explains in this track.

Katy B – Katy on a Mission

In one of this years more surprising combinations indie popsters Mystery Jets meet fidget legends Count & Sinden. It isn’t quite what I would have expected but this tropical pop track is really good, and you will be singing it non-stop after a couple of plays.

The Count & Sinden – After Dark (Feat. Mystery Jets)

Hudson Mohawke is being tipped as a real artist to watch here in the UK, and you can tell why from his new track Joy Fantastic, which is 4 minutes of trippy brilliance.

Hudson Mohawke – Joy Fantastic (Featuring Olivier Daysoul)

One of my favorite new remixers is Professor Purple. I’ve got a remix he did for a contest run by Caribou, of the track Sun, and I’d say it’s his best work yet.

Caribou – Sun (Professor Purple Remix)

I’d never heard of Hi-Deaf before their remix of Samuel which I came across on Soundcloud, but after listening I’m an instant fan.

Samuel – I Heart NY featuring Penny (Hi-Deaf Remix)

Cheers for reading guys!

HURTS Reveal Clip of New Song in Video EPK

05 14 2010

Coming with the news today that you can now pre-order HURTS‘ first official single, Better Than Love, the boys from Manchester have just unleashed a new video EPK that has Theo and Adam explaining their processes and methodologies behind some of the best brooding-pop that I’ve heard in a long while.

Hurtsepk

Fresh off their highly successful NME tour, Theo takes a moment to chat and wax with fans. Read his words below.

Our first tour.

From the reeds on banks of the concrete rivers of Glasgow, to the lofty heights of Mount Northampton. A boat that rocked and a church that blasphemed in between.

The last three weeks have left us with open eyes and aching hearts. Showing you our songs is something we have resisted for so long, but it makes us so happy to finally share our lives with you. And that you welcomed us so warmly. The theatre, the drama, the gin, Richard, nearly getting arrested in Wrexham, the four tiers of eyes at Koko and the purple rain of Stoke. Every moment that will last forever. It was something to remember, and build a castle upon.

We must finish the album we played you now. Then play it for you some more when the sun comes out. A winter album for the summer breeze. Thank you for singing the words. Thank you for watching and judging. A glass is raised, with your lipstick on the rim.

Until soon,

HURTS

So that’s that…and this is the new video EPK, with a clip of the song Stay. Highly enjoyable and utterly amazing.

Kele – Tenderoni (debut single!)

04 28 2010

Want to hear Kele‘s awesome new single, Tenderoni? BBC and NME Radio have gotten their first plays of it in the books this afternoon, and you can stream it below cause we’re cool like that.

Kele

And after listening you’ll understand why I’ve never liked Bloc Party. It’s because this track is so good and Kele works wonders on his own. The band as a whole? They were boring.

That is all.

Class Actress Played the Studio at Webster Hall

04 28 2010

Last night, Brooklyn duo, Class Actress, jumped into the East Village with a tight set of their best tunes. Sharing a bill supported by Your Vegas and Keepaway, along with NME Radio DJ James Theaker, the local act showcased their talents and left me a bigger fan after finally having caught their live performance.

Classactress_studiowebster

Class Actress is, essentially, the embodiment of Elizabeth Harper: quirky and enigmatic with a splash of subdued showmanship that make her songs both easily accessible and equally digestible. Running through a number of songs you can find on her debut EP, Journal of Ardency, Harper and her accompanying keyer/guitarist gave a simple yet effective set of pop and new wave tunes.

You can buy Class Actress' EP here, or catch them live tonight at Bowery Ballroom, when they open for VV Brown. You can still grab a ticket here.

More pics here, and yes this is a short review, because I'll be at their show tonight as well. So hooray for more words tomorrow!

C86

09 01 2009

Totally loving the new Memory Tapes LP, Seek Magic. Dayve Hawk combines his two side projects Weird Tapes, and Memory Cassette into the one sleek project, and the results couldnt be much better. Alot of this stuff has been making the rounds for some time now but its great to hear the final product. Ranging from spaced out epic disco, to uplifting poppy dream-wave, and even a hint of New Order (see the lush bassline in the second half of Bicycle). Also, sorry guys but the files are going to be via Mediafire or the like for the time being, our server is getting pretty full.

MP3: Memory Tapes - Bicycle
MP3: Memory Tapes - Pink Stones

Finally got my hands on the legendary NME C86 tapes the other day (cheers Angus). This was the compilation, released in 1986 that defined an era, gave birth to the british indie/jangle pop sound of the time, and came to be known as a genre of its own. I do loathe NME though.
