The song that best sums up my feelings for N.E.R.D.’s Nothing is “Life As A Fish.” I’m not entirely how to explain this song. Shockingly true to the title, it is a song vaguely detailing the existence of an aquatic vertebrate, with a dreamy backing track that sounds like what would happen if The Neptunes remixed elevator music. It’s thematically all over the place; it touches on creation and evolution, the limited lives of fish and, finally, a kind of criticism of humanity from a fish’s perspective with a warning against littering thrown in for good measure. The chorus is a comical crescendo of “On dry land (dry land), where the living scream die man (die man).” It is literally insane, disorganized and, to be frank, bad.

Tyler The Creator claims he is the biggest N.E.R.D. fan around and that Pharrell and Chad Hugo are essentially the reasons why he began producing music. We were first exposed to Tyler in September with the release of the demonic sounding Bastard Mixtape”. His remix of “Inside of Clouds,” off N.E.R.D’s newly released Nothing LP, has helped the rapper gain more exposure. His deep voice, angry punk attitude, and lethargic fashion of spitting sounds refreshing alongside Pharrell’s soprano vocalization, complimenting the synth and flute friendly ambience of “Inside of Clouds.”

OHMYGOSH!! I can’t believe I’m still waiting for this album to come out! N*E*R*D has pushed back the release date of their fourth full-length album, Nothing, from June 2010 to September 2010 to November 2010. In any case, I’m still really excited about this album. The boys of N*E*R*D recently performed “Hypnotize U” on Letterman. They also sat down with Mark Hoppus of Blink-182 in an interview talking about music and their latest album. As mentioned in the interview, this track, “Hypnotize U” is produced by THE electro duo, DAFT PUNK. Another piece of exciting news is that N*E*R*D and Canada’s own, Chromeo, are teaming up for two epic sideshows in Australia. N*E*R*D will be gracing Toronto with their presence the eve of Oct 14th performing at the Air Canada Centre; they are currently touring with the GORILLAZ. For all you lucky people who have the money to check out GORILLAZ’s Plastic Beach tour with N*E*R*D…I hate you.
