01 17 2012

The artist formerly known as Mos Def (he goes by his Muslim name Yasiin Bey now) is embarking on the massive undertaking that is his Top 40 Underdog project, quasi-covering big radio hits. The first track to undergo the treatment is Jay-Z and Kanye West’s “Niggas in Paris”

The Universal Magnetic

10 31 2011

“If You Can Huh” and “Universal Magnetic” are gems off Mos Def’s The Universal Magnetic, an EP that came out in 1997 via Rawkus Records . This seems as good of a time as any to post these, especially with Mos changing his name and Black Star preparing for a comeback (hopefully). Thanks to Hip Hop and Breakz for the vinyl rip.

Best Alliance in Hip-Hop

09 22 2011

If you’re a fan of Hip-Hop at all, you’re more than likely familiar with Black Star, a legendary duo comprised of Mos Def and Talib Kweli. It’s a shame the tag team only put out a single album, as their lyrical genius atop Hi-Tek‘s production was a one-two punch that’s second to none. Rumors have been floating around for years that a second album was in the works, but it’s pretty unlikely. Wikipedia says the projected released date for Black Star 2 is sometime in 2012, but Wikipedia doesn’t know anything.

Anyway, Black Star will be performing tonight in Chicago at House of Blues and you should try and buy a ticket for the late show (early show is sold out). Just a heads up, tickets clock in at a hair over $60 (after tax), so don’t be alarmed.

Friday, September 23 @ House of Blues:

Kanye West‘s G.O.O.D. Friday track of the week, “Don’t Look Down” — dubbed “The Phoenix Story” by Kanye on Twitter — features two big names, Mos Def, Lupe Fiasco, and a quickly rising figure in hip-hop’s new school, Big Sean. It should be noted that the Phoenix character that this song is referring to is a prominent character in Kanye’s Runaway short film that premiered last night, as well as the star of Kanye’s now banned My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy album art (above).
