Softlightes

12 14 2011

Poor old Softlightes, looks like Modular wasn’t too amped on their new record.

But the good news for you and me (but not you) is that the San Diego twee-popsters aren’t taking this slap to the crotch lying down – they’re going guerilla. They’re printing out flyers and dropping them in the school stairwell. They’re sticker-bombing the local Starbucks. They’re hiring a van and painting SOFTLIGHTES on the side panels and driving around densely populated strips of San Diego. They’re making a Soundcloud and saying “Hey Pav, fuck you, this record would have scored you so much rack. So enjoy having slightly less rack than usual, because we’ve gone guerilla and dropped this record FOR FREE”. Read the full story here.

Here’s a few choice cuts – kinda sounds a bit Death Cab. Get in there before the band are prompted to buy a Premium account and downloads cap out:

Ladyhawke

Sterling electro-pop siren Ladyhawke will be releasing a sophomore album ‘Anxiety’ in March next year through Modular.

The album itself was recorded in part in New Zealand and in part France and produced by long-time collaborator Pascal Gabriel – who has produced for the likes of Little Boots, Goldfrapp as well ass Marina and the Diamonds.

When asked about the record Phillipa had to say this;

“I’ve made an album I’m really proud of, so I just can’t wait to start playing with the band again, and touring and having some fun. I can’t wait to get back into it.”

Go check out Ladyhawke in the studio here.

FEEL GOOD HOUSE
• Noob – Spell (Original Mix) √+ [Beatport] *192 Kbps
This is an uplifting little number from the producer from Bordeaux known as Noob. Released in early October on the Sound Pellegrino label, the Spell EP has already gained some big time attention, including a spot on Digitalism’s I Love Techno Chart on Beatport.

JAARTRONICA
• Nicolas Jaar – Don’t Break My Love (Original Mix) √+
Just released this week on his own Clown & Sunset label, Nicolas Jaar‘s Don’t Break My Love EP is a pure auditory delight. Always unique sound from the 21 year old phenom.

CREEPY TECHNO
• Torb – Rubidrama (Original Mix) √+ [Beatport] *192 Kbps
French producer, Torb, put out Mars Premier as the latest release on Cassius Records, and all 3 tracks on the EP are fuego. Supported by Boys Noize, supported by GDD™.

PARTY IN THE MOONLIGHT HOUSE
• Fonzerelli – Moonlight Party (Tom Glass Remix) √+
I love this song. Brings back memories from a long time ago when we used to blast the original of this song in the dorms (FT) at UCSB. Great new take on it here from Tom Glass.

DOESN’T GET MUCH GROOVIER THAN THIS HOUSE
• Zombie Disco Squad – Piano Man (Original Mix) √++ [Beatport] *192 Kbps
Out on the Made To Play imprint last week, Zombie Disco Squad‘s ‘Piano Man’ is my new favorite single by the guys. Equipped with 4 different mixes of the original, this release is a must have. Buy the whole thang on Beatport now!

PSYCHEDELIC IDM

FuzZ – Deep *320

FuzZ never has produced anything I didn’t love and Deep is no exception. Deep lures you in with a complex and long intro, only to drop you into a mellow, groovy and psychedelic wonderland that is similar to the best Flying Lotus beats. This track is not one to miss folks, click the link and grab the MP3 now!

FEEL GOOD TECH-HOUSE

YO Bill – Teddy Jammin *320

YO Bill has been kind enough to give away this track exclusively on this weeks dirt! Teddy Jammin is as technical as it is catchy, which can only be a good thing. The track’s groovy vocals have been mixed in with YO Bill’s recognizably intricate percussion to bring you a guaranteed dance floor hit!

JAW DROPPING TECH-HOUSE

Colour – Frequencies Modulate *320

Many of the die-hard Tech fans have been watching Colour with amazement, it seems the English producer really can do no wrong. Don’t believe me? Grab Frequencies Modulate, take a listen and you can send me your apology later. The track takes you on a dark journey that resonates retro-house chords, complex percussion and intricate synthesis. Seriously, grab this jam!

MELODIC ELECTRO

THIEVES – Pousser *320

The up and coming Los Angeles natives, THIEVES always impress me and Pousser is no exception. It’s an original groove that speaks to the duo’s rock roots.

LATE NIGHT LATIN GROOVES

Desantarosa – Cuando La Noche Es Buena *320

Speaking of up and comers, can you believe this kid is only 15!? Keep an eye on Desantarosa, I predict big things!

mp3: new Memory Tapes – Slaughtered

10 06 2011

Memory Tapes hooked up this “new record in the form of a mixtape” for Modular’s always stellar Modcast series. Dayve Hawk says of the 23 minute mix of all new/original material:

“I find I listen to mixtapes more than albums a lot of the time, so I wanted to make a new record in the form of a mixtape instead of a single or EP etc. It’s all new, original Memory Tapes stuff just put together in the form of an extended mix. I thought the Modcast would be a cool way to make it available to people quickly and for free.”

Beastly Listening: Beni’s Debut, House of Beni

09 20 2011

Houseofbeni

Modular's latest in all things house and haute, Beni bursts forth with a sneak peak preview of his debut album, due out October 11 here in the States. Having already heard the tracks It's a Bubble and Someone Just Like You, House of Beni rounds out with 8 more rad records to add to your repertoire. We'd suggest specific ones for you to listen and love up on, but we barely make it past opening cut, Sway (featuring vocals from Nomi Ruiz of Jessica 6), before we're already hitting repeat.

video: Cut Copy – “Blink and You’ll Miss a Revolution”

09 13 2011

From the band:

“The Blink And You’ll Miss A Revolution video was found in a rusty chest in an ancient grotto in Saint-Maximin, France. From what archaeologists can ascertain from the hieroglyphic-like scribings inside the chest, it was directed by Emile Sornin, and produced by Jules de Chateleux at Division.”
