The Dirt #61: Tropicool & aRod

02 02 2012

The Dirt #61 is brought to you by Tropicool + aRod.  Expect a heavy dose of rooftop sunset vibes + beach haus grooves courtesy of Plastic Plates, Moon Boots, Gigamesh, Beni, Cosmic Kids and…Phil Collins (and many more!).  It’s a dozen disco-filled donuts, all available for your downloading pleasure (via the GDD™ Facebook page)!  Dig in…

Tropicool Picks

• Moon Boots – Aretha

Moon Boots is on absolute fire. His original productions have a very special funk feel and keep getting better. Definitely an act to keep an eye on if you don’t already.

• DJ Nibc & Patrick L ft. Andrea Cavaco – Call Me (Mercury Remix)

Another deep sexy groove by GDD favorite DJ Nibc. Silky vocals and an infectious bassline.

• The Do – Gonna Be Sick (Mylo Remix)

The holy god of all gods Mylo is back. This track is rather rock infused but an incredible remix. The guy is so diversely talented. Is there anything he can’t do?

• Princeton – Florida (Cosmic Kids Remix)

The new one from our LA boys Cosmic Kids. Magical undertones over a very nice indie dance track. Feel good any time any where.

• Plastic Plates – Toys

The first original production Felix Bloxsom produced under his own alias Plastic Plates. It keeps on building and is so multifaceted it’s mind-bogling. And of coarse the production is 2nd to none. One of the best songs of 2012 for sure so far.

• Stars on 33 – LUV

Feel good groove to turn that frown upside down. Pair this with a disco biscuit and a light up dance floor and you may never come home.

aRod Picks

• Phil Collins – In The Air Tonight

After being (hilariously) mocked by Mike Tyson in The Hangover & Stewie on Family Guy, I never thought this song would recover and be cool again.  I was wrong. Cosmo Black brings it back with STYLE.

• Rodion & Khan (feat. Andrea) – Discoteca Romana (The C90s Remix)

FACT: The C90s always make solid remixes (If you don’t believe me, look up their remixes of “Crave You” and “Washing Machine”).  The C90s consistenly make can’t miss, go-to disco remixes.  This remix of Rodion & Khan is no exception.

• Grouplove – Tongue Tied (Gigamesh Remix)

One of my favorite characteristics of Gigamesh is his diversity.  He’s got a flair for mixing up genres from disco to freestyle to chilled out pop.  His remix of Grouplove shows a knack for playful disco pop.

• Fallulah – Out of It (Chameo Remix)

Danish producer Chameo brings the goods on this one.  Uplifting synths, blissful female vocals, epic breakdowns + a mountain full of catchiness & bounce.

• Matt Corby – Brother (Lancelot Remix)

Get used to Lancelot.  You will be hearing a TON of good things from him in 2012.  Whilst we wait for his “We Can Dance” EP to drop on February 20th from Binary (with remixes by Goldroom, Fabian, Moonchild & Frames) this beautiful Lancelot deep house remix should tide you over for the time being.

• Kimbra – Two Way Street (Beni Remix)

Capping off this week’s Dirt is a slow-burning, minimal house remix of the oh-so-lovely Kimbra from our boy Beni. Enjoy…

Catz N’ Dogz Lift You Up

12 12 2011

I really like Catz N’ Dogz. I saw them earlier this year with Tanner Ross (alongside Ari Frank, Daniel Andres and Savile) at a party in the meat packing district and they were incredible. Tanner Ross too. I didn’t make it in time for the openers, but I’m sure they were great as well. It was an all around splendid night thanks to Openbox and MiM.

Anyway, Catz N’ Dogz have always been super consistent with the quality of their releases and this rework of Mercury’s “You Lift Me Up” is strong evidence of that. If you’re looking for a reference point, look no further than Mano Le Tough’s remix of “Loving You Is Killing Me” by Aloe Blacc; in my opinion, they share a similar tone. Dig into the stream below and rest assured that both of the mentioned tracks are in my “Best of 2011″ list.

The Dirt #49 : Sweet FA + Troy Kurtz

10 21 2011

What’s good dirty dancers? It’s Friday, and there are few better ways to soundtrack your weekend than with this latest helping of The Dirt! Troy Kurtz & Sweet FA have been hard at work, handpicking a few of their favorite tunes of the moment, so without further ado, we’re happy to present The Dirt #48…

Casino Times – That’s The Truth (Original Mix)
Beautiful slow-burning house from a duo to watch closely in the coming months. This is a rework of the De La Soul and Chaka Khan track ‘All Good’. Vibes!

Mercury – Sweetness (Original Mix) √+
Giving the nod to old school house with their combination of electronic piano and soulful vocal stabs, Mercury‘s new Sweetness release is an absolute gem. Can highly recommend the full EP, which also features a stellar remix from Catz N’ Dogz.

Groove Armada – RJ’s Theme (Original Mix) √+
Progressive tech-house from Groove Armada‘s recent Red Light project. The synth build is pretty much identical to Danny Daze‘s summer smash ‘Fall Away From Love’ which is maybe why I dig it so much.

Jack Dixon – Clear (Original Mix)
Awesome piece of uptempo house music from Londoner Jack Dixon. The percussion on this track is so crisp. Looking forward to checking out his Knowledge EP which drops next week on Losing Suki.

Eliphino – More Than Me by somethinksounds
Set for release on Halloween via Somethinksounds, Eliphino‘s new track ‘More Than Me’ has been on repeat for the past couple weeks. The versatile London-based producer has already had a release on Gilles Peterson‘s Brownswood imprint, and he’s bound to kick up a great deal more heat with this tune when it finally drops.

Double 99 – RIP Groove √+
90s UK garage that obliterates a dancefloor. I saw Nic Fanciulli drop this at Sensation London in August and the place went nuts for it.

• M83 – Run Into Flowers

The new M83 album Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming was officially released earlier this week, and it sits comfortably atop the contenders for album of the year. This track is from one of Anthony Gonzalez’s earlier albums, and might be one of my favorite songs of all time.

• ASAP Rocky – Wassup
NY drug dealer turned man rapper ASAP Rocky is the truth. He’s got a  promethazine infused swagger, and it slow-grinds all over this Clams Casino beat (same guy who produced the mesmerizing I’m God.)

• Bombay Bicycle Club – Lights Out  Words Gone (Dark Sky Remix)
Dark Sky is back again with an extremely emotional mix of Bombay Bicycle Club. Never one to disappoint, a hypnotically deep groove bounces around crooning vocals. Buy the track here.

• 11:11 – Tourist Trap (Jamie Jones Remix)

If you haven’t heard, the consummate businessman that is one Sean Combs AKA genius has teamed up with Guy Gerber to form the 11:11 project. Even though it sounds a bit kooky, the likes of Jamie Jones, Soul Clap, and Renaissance Man have already been on the remix cartel.

• Solomun & Stimming – See You Everyday
I’ve been slamming this one in a lot of sets lately. I really dig the rain/thunder samples. Well played.

• Salem – Sick

I’ll leave you with some witch†haus to get you in the mood for Halloween. And a birdy told me there is a /// Halloween mix dropping sooner than you can say, “OMG LOOK AT WHAT THAT GIRL IS WEARING I CAN SEE HER EVERYTHING!”
