GDD™ Premiere: Cobra Starship – #1 Nite (Black Cards Remix) + Mixtape Preview!

01 25 2012

It’s always fun to see musicians from bands that I listened to in high school coming around to the realm of dance music production. Sonny from From First To Last was reborn as Dubstep wonderboy, Skrillex. And now, Fall Out Boy‘s Pete Wentz and Hidden In Plain View/Saves The Day‘s Spencer Peterson have recently teamed up as Black Cards, already putting together a handful of catchy remixes for the likes of Major Lazer, Rihanna, Cobra Starship, and more. We’ll be giving you the world premiere of their first mixtape (as seen in image above) tomorrow morning, but have a first look today at their unreleased Big Room Electro remix of Cobra Starship’s #1Nite.

Major Lazer – Original Don (Flosstradamus Remix)

The epiphany of cool is now unofficially Flosstradamus‘s remix of Major Lazer‘s track ‘Original Don’. Such a bloody cool track!

The Fools Gold signed outfit are 2 DJ/Producers J2K (Josh Young) and DJ Autobot (Curt Cameruci) from Chicago who are best known for their work with various artists including Kid Sister, Chromeo, Cool Kids and more.

This remix is one of those song that no matter what racial status you are will make you go “Daaaayaaammm Soooooon”! it resonates and oozes slimey yet delicious cool

Diplo disses Coachella

01 12 2012

Diplo

Diplo, one of Twitters most prolific dance profiles has hit out at the Coachella 2012 lineup.

Although the original tweet has now been deleted, the one-half creative behind Major Lazer and production for M.I.A and Beyonce tweeted: “maybe im just throwing shade but coachsmella looks pretty lame this year.. u used to be a place to check out new bands/music.” adding “besides snoop and dre thats boss shit right there” and “its like bootleg ultra w a few bands that are ‘safe’.” Admittedly, the lineup does have its share of predictable indie bands and cheesed-out Euro-dance superstars, but those things have their place, too.”

It’s a bit sad to see that Diplo pulled the tweet though.

As an at-times overly opinionated person it’s a testament to stick by your word. Should it really make any difference if Joe Bloggs said it or Diplo? Everyone’s entitled to an opinion and someone with the musical depth as Mr Pentz might have it on good authority to know what’s flash and what isn’t.

Maybe it was just the fact Major Lazer was left off the bill?

This year will be the first year the festival is held over two weekends, full lineup here including a breakdown of dance acts over the full set of dates.

The Dirt #56: jonahberry + Toks

12 15 2011

So we took last week off of The Dirt and we sincerely apologize for it, but what better way to come back this week than with a mouthwatering, user-submitted buttshot and a terrific 11-pack of tunes to get you ready for the weekend! As usual, we have a bit of everything in here, so either take our word for it and download everything via the zip files, or pick and choose which ones sound good to you. Happy Dirt day people.

JACKIN’ TECH HOUSE
Riva Starr, Major Lazer – Jump (The Martin Brothers Remix) √+ [Beatport]
Out last month on the Snatch! subsidiary label, Snatch! Special, this remix of Jump by Christian and Justin blends the familiar sounds of Snatch! and DirtyBird and is deservedly the first track on the compilation release.

VOCAL INDIE NU DISCO
Metronomy – Everything Goes My Way (Ewan Pearson Remix) √+ [Beatport]
I first heard this remix on Danny Daze‘s guest mix for Nic Fanciulli‘s Worldwide Sounds podcast. I love the original from Metronomy and Ewan Pearson sticks to the main elements while incorporating a great Nu Disco feel.

TECHNO + HOUSE
Lazy Ants & Rob Threezy – Chi to Rome (Mike Mago Remix) √+
Set for release next Monday the 19th, the Chi to Rome EP from Lazy Ants and Rob Threezy incorporates some of my favorite genres: Acid House, Chicago House, and Techno. This remix from BMKLTSCH Records head honcho, Mike Mago, delivers a bit of a Chicago House vibe while incorporating the repetition of a solid Techno tune.

EPIC DREAMWAVE
Cut Copy – Sun God (Andrew Weatherall Remix) √+
Cut Copy received a Grammy nod for Best Dance/Electronica Album a couple weeks ago for their fantastic Zonoscope LP, and in celebration they’ve released this nearly 9-minute epic remix from the legendary Brit, Andrew Weatherall. It’s a must have.

LUVSTEP
Traveler – Phantom (Original Mix) √+
I just posted on these guys earlier this week, but I felt like I needed to include this track in The Dirt this week because it’s been on such heavy rotation since I downloaded it on Monday. Keep a serious eye out for Traveler in 2012.

DISCO

Gigamesh - Burnin’

Gigamesh is heating up the Winter by bringing back the classic “Disco Inferno” with great taste and extra grooves. It’s just another gem to add to the quality Gigamesh catalog.

HEAVY ELECTRO

 Uppermost – Positive [Beatport]

Uppermost displays his refined production skills with a harder hitting, Justice type sound in “Positive,” a track of off his latest release, Action.

DRUM ‘N’ BASS

Sigma – Do You Love [Beatport]

This round of the Dirt calls for a tune from the always dependable Sigma. I find it necessary to have a little up-tempo energy and this easily gets the job done.

BASS FUSION

 Rustie – All Nite

I’m sure you could relate on how good it feels to come across a great artist and my latest discovery is Glasgow’s Rustie. With a unique and distinct style, he’s definitely one to look out for, especially with support from BBC’s Annie Mac.

DUBSTEP

Metric – Collect Call (Adventure Club Remix)

They’re known for their remixes, and it’s to no surprise that Adventure Club has put together a great arrangement of Metric’s “Collect Call.” Having the foundation of great vocals to work with facilitates the production process, but they certainly take it a step further.

DOWNTEMPO

 Emancipator – Elephant Survival

Emancipator is one of my favorite producers to chill to and with his laidback, flowing vibe, there’s not much else I could ask for. If you don’t already “like” his Facebook, I suggest you do so as he gave this track out for free today after reaching 30,000 fans!

New Video: Major Lazer – “Original Don”

12 09 2011

You guys know we love Major Lazer’s “Original Don” and all the remixes it’s already spawned, thanks to that totally irresistible, dynamic beat that seems to amalgamate influences from all over the map. The video will give you another cultural reference point to go on, what with its compelling portrayal of what a family barbeque at your grandmother’s house might look like if everyone in your family was trained in swordplay. It’s not quite a typical Major Lazer video (sorry, no daggering or creepily edited dancers here), but enjoyable for an entirely different reason.
