Recap: MNDR Steals the Night With New Songs at Mercury Lounge

08 31 2010

Precisely as that title states, last night's early show (weird, haven't seen an 8:00pm start time in a loooong while) at Mercury Lounge featured the inimitable MNDR headlining the space in NYC's Lower East Side. And while she's pretty much our good pal at this point, making us the most biased beast, um ever, we can take a step back and note that every instance in which we've caught her live show (it's been a lot) she's far exceeded previous performances. It's not that she was ever NOT good...it's that she just keeps getting better and better at every turn. Other artists: beware.

Beginning the set with a personal favorite in Caligula, MNDR was a nonstop flurry of mathematically magical music and motion. After a few more "known cuts" (she's only got a few out there!), the moment we'd had hoped would arrive came to be...and oh, it was pretty fantastic. New music, in the form of songs Diamonds and Casual Attraction, impressed beyond imagination. While the former takes cues from I Go Away in the more "oh man I feel feelings" sense, the latter is another sing-along stunner that incites jumping, dancing, high-fiving and smiling until your face breaks. Yep, it's that good.

We chatted with MNDR after the gig, and ol' girl's got some goodies coming up in the next few months. Sure, we'd share 'em now, but we need every excuse to write more writings about this incredible talent down the line.

Until then, check out the full gallery of images here, and peep the videos from last night's show below. And duh, of course we captured them new jawns, along with Caligula and the "Patty Hearst tribute song" which we still have no idea what the real title of said song is, but it is damn fine. Beast pleased!

Recap: Scissor Sisters Get Super Hot, and a Little Sweaty, at Terminal 5

08 25 2010

Sporting lots of leather and no lace, Scissor Sisters returned to their hometown of New York City last night, and took Terminal 5 on a tour of their biggest hits, spanning three full-length albums which culminated in their most recent, and strongest, release, Night Work. And work the night, and the stage, they did.

Starting with the title track from said album, the entrance to the stage proved precisely what was in store for the predominantly male, and seemingly way oversold crowd. Lights, latex and limber moves abounded as Jake Shears and Ana Matronix shared vocal duties over the course of the evening, pairing up for calisthenics during Any Which Way and Whole New Way, the first of which you can catch video of below.

Small players Del Marquis and Baby Daddy take an obvious back seat to the glitz and glamour of the two frontspair, but their musical finessings proved easy to swallow, and ultimately outshone the vocals on a number of the songs. Crowd energy hit a peaked high when the troupe launched into debut hit, Take Your Mama Out, after Ana and Co. dedicated it to all the families, including their own, in the audience.

Working the night in the most sensual way, Scissor Sisters were welcomed back home with wide open, and spirited arms.

View full set of images from the show here. Video of Any Which Way is below a few choice pictures and the set list.

Recap: Lights, Sounds and Bruises with Crystal Castles at Terminal 5

08 24 2010

Let it be known: I've never gone to a show under the premise of "oh lawdy no, I'm not taking my camera out for fear of what might happen to it...or even, me." But that all changed this past Saturday when Crystal Castles rolled through Terminal 5, on another date under the HARD NYC guise. Armed with a battalion of my closest pals, we braved the threshes of a rabid crowd and got right near stage front. Totes worth it.

Since I have no pictures, words and a few shaky, seizure-inducing videos will have to do.

Highlights of the set included Baptism (duh), Untrust Us played as the first song back in the encore, and about half of singer Alice Glass' time spent crowd-surfing and generally raging the heck out of the venue's stage. Tons of bruises subsequently sprouted up in the past two days, but frankly, the crowd, as rambunctious as it was, surprisingly held a certain camaraderie about it...even when I was desperately grasping a fellow Castle-thrashers' neck to balance myself.

Next level endorphins ran high during and after the set. One act not to miss live.

Recap: T.I. Played at Capitale for AXE Music’s One Night Only Concert Event

08 17 2010

If there was ever a single, short and stacked spitter that made me so weak in the knees, that distinguishing honor would go to T.I. Far be it from me to note that he just got himself wifey-ed (he'll always be a single stud to me), but we're not here to talk rings and things...no, we're aiming to dish on the 3+ hour performance that the rapper put on last night at Capitale, as part of  AXE Music's One Night Only event. If you stalk twitter, you may have seen a bevy of jawdropping tweets from those in attendance, and all warranted the gasps, oohs, and aahs that kept a'rolling out.

Bringing out his best buddies and beauties, TIP ran the gamut between songs both new and old (reminder: King Uncaged comes out on September 28), in a set that spanned 30 cuts and a guests that made you go "oh wow yes".

Starting off with the fitting track, I'm Back, the dude was a nonstop whirl of sweat, spit, sex and stealth moves as he entertained in this, his first live show since getting freed from the pinstripes. Yep, this being his premiere post-prison performance, the rapper seemed not ot have missed an steps as he brought out the likes of Cam'Ron, Mary J Blige (yeah!), B.o.B., Keri Hilson, Swizz Beats, Maino and a number of his homeboys to brrrraapp into the mic.

Highlights included the inclusion of Ms. Mary J, along with the crowd pleasers Live Your Life and the current chart-topper, Got Your Back, with the aforementioned Hilson.

Special thanks to Edelman, AXE and Sarah for hooking up a super amazing evening. Video of Live Your Life can be checked out below, and the full gallery of images reside right here.

Jay-Z Performed at Radio City for NIKE’s World Basketball Festival (full set video!)

08 13 2010

NYC was definitely in full on Run This Town-mode last night, as Kanye West popped up at secret gig at The Box, Rihanna's Last Girl on Earth tour hit Madison Square Garden and H to the Izzo walked on stage at Radio City for a 33-minute set at the NIKE World Basketball Festival. Donned in all black everything (duh), Jay-Z brought out a half-hour of his finest material, and we've got the clips of the entire haps.

Jayz

Joined by guests Swizz Beatz, Bridgett Kelly and Memphis Bleek, the Roc boss tore up the legendary stage for the new fest, which introduced the WBF team showcasing skills and drills.

But we really just wanted to see the performance, and even though we couldn't be in attendance, there's video of the entire set. Super win.

Watch the 2 part piece now!
