Pigeonhole This! Promo

08 11 2010
Following last week's feature on his new label Pigeonhole This! Martin Doorly's very kindly given GottaDanceDirty an exclusive first bite of the cherry in the form of a label promo from the above. The six track sampler of Doorly originals features vocals from Lady Chann as well as guest collabs with Rory Lyons and Felix Yeah! Describing the ethos behind the label as wishing to be as versatile as possible, Doorly has gone and put out a genre defying EP. From 'UK Geee'; a six minute dose of funky fidget, to 'The One' (posted last week) featuring the UK Queen of Dancehall Lady Chann, it becomes pretty clear that Doorly is a guy refusing to be pigeonholed. 'Sausage Party' combines orchestral synthlines with a UK Garage sound, the outcome: a track not too far astray from something you'd hear on MJ Cole's Riddim EP, while 'Siren' delves even deeper, bringing with it a real tech-house groove...you get the gist. The EP establishes Doorly as a jack of all trades and Pigeonhole This! as a label to watch closely over the months and years to come.

this is still in talks at Crown Jewels so please keep this saved as a draft for now, sorry about any confusion on that.

Lady Chann – Feel Calm

07 12 2010

Lady Chann has voiced Ricky Blaze's Hold Yuh riddim for a new track of her own, dubbed Feel Calm. Yes, it's the same riddim Gyptian uses.

Maxed Out

06 21 2010
I don't usually post grime, but there's one guy I think you should know about, as I think it's only a matter of time before he becomes a household name as an MC crossing over into dance music. I've been listening to a lot of tracks from seventeen year old East-Londoner Maxsta; still unsigned, he was first bigged up during our interview earlier this year with Toddla T. Since then he's released his debut Maxsta mixtape, as well as a bunch of collabs, my favorite of which was recent tune with Lady Chann 'Dun Dem Season', produced by Seiji.

While I'm on the subject, Lady Chann's another one to look out for, she's been tipped as UK's Queen of Dancehall, and is set to release her next record later in the year via Toddla T's own label: Girls Music. There's a lot of dancehall stuff to get hyped about this year, particularly after the success of Major Lazer in 2009, it seems a bit like the floodgates have opened up. If you were diggin' that as much as we were, pay particular attention to Ninja Tune, Mad Decent and Girls Music this year, we'll be keeping you posted on our picks so you don't miss a beat.

Running High

05 23 2010
Just got my mits on debut album Running High from Montreal based producer Poirier. Signed to Ninja Tune, this guy's pushing an awesome sound; his influences stem from dancehall soca-electro to tropical. The first disc on Running High features Poirier's set of originals, including the massive 'Wha-La-La-Leng', a track featuring some well known samples which will make even the most idle Major Lazer fan piss themselves. The second, is a remix disc featuring reworks from names such as Baobinga, Wildlife! and Hugo Douster - it's not a bonus disc I feel like turning into a coaster for my beer, so a big win on that front. Ninja Tune are definitely a label to watch out for in the coming months, having recently signed Toddla T for the release of his second record, set to drop later this year. Although they've been around for years, I've a feeling these guys are set to be the European rival to Mad Decent in 2010, with the amount of dancehall driven electro they're pushing. Back to Poirier though, this week he's playing on the West-Coast and you can catch him at one of the following shows:
Wednesday May 26: Low End Theory, The Airliner - Los Angeles, CA
Thursday May 27: Momo Lounge - Sacramento, CA
Friday May 28: Smash! Party, Forbes KTV - Las Vegas, NV
Saturday May 29: Suraya Dub, Club Six - San Francisco, CA
