EYヨ

01 05 2012

The highly talented and creative Japanese born vocalist/(Dada) visual artist, Yamatsuka Eye, is down for the Sugar Mountain Festival in Melbourne and also for this years Sydney Festival. He is most known for founding the experimental rock band Boredoms in early 1986, a progression from noise band Hanatarash created by Eye, Zeni Geva and Mitsuru Tabata in 1984.

Apart from Boredoms and Hanatarash, Eye has many alias and has used numerous other pseudonyms. Eye is a member of UFO or Die, Puzzle Punks, Noise Ramones and Destroy 2. Eye has also made many collaberations with folk such as Sonic Youth, Matt Groening (The Simpsons), Gang Gang Dance, Ween, Battles, Beck, and John Zorn. His discography is very complex and hard to follow; one look at his Discogs page would illustrate this.

In addition, Eye is also a magnificent and highly versitile DJ (check the mixes below). He sometimes DJs under the name DJ 光光光 (DJ pica pica pica) or just DJ EYE.

Eye participated in the Boredoms 77 Boadrum performance which occurred on July 7, 2007 at 7:07 PM at the Empire-Fulton Ferry State Park in Brooklyn, New York – consisting of 77 drummers. 88 Boadrum, held on August 8, 2008, naturally followed.

Yamantaka Eye will be down doing DJ sets at the locations mentioned previously + one more special gig taking place next Friday (the 13th) @ the Mercat Basement, presented by Bamboo Musik && Noise in My Head. $15, 10pm til late – check the FB page for more details. Not to be missed!

CONCENTRATION

09 07 2010

This CD has been on repeat in my car system for days on end. Really lovely composed mix from the ESP Institute/Lovefingers camp.

“Welcome to the first in a series of philanthropic, pedagogical compilations from the ESP Institute. Curated and programmed by Lovefingers, “Concentration” is a narrative blend of obscurities, re-edits and remixes contributed by the label’s international family of collaborators. So we get the sublime cinematic boogie of “Rocks In Me”, edited by Alexis Le-Tan & Lee Douglas. Bumrocks take a typically off the beaten track route with the slinky “Piedra” – some kind of Balearic pop ditty that warms the cockles of your heart. Soft rock driver “Worldwide” arrives edited by Take, and there’s the Laurel Canyon dreaminess of “I Gotta Woman” (Abel edit). Also check the Chee Shimizu remix of “Yuku Yuku” – definitely a must for fans of Krautrock-disco fusions! Lexx’s killer tropical electro-Balearic disco sounds of “Verliebt”, a beautiful kalimba-tinted Afro-disco-not-disco of “Mateki” by Cos/Mes, and Afro-electro-disco of “Khoi Khoi”, edited by Secret Circuit. All proceeds from this series are donated to Harmony Project, a non-profit organization dedicated to youth development through music study, practice and performance.”
