Justin Timberlake can now add producer to his resume – producing Memphis based FreeSol’s latest track, ‘Role Model’. He also guests vocals on the intro with a rap verse, which, is probably the worst part of the song and his childlike, auto-tuned voice doesn’t fit with the rest of the song’s aesthetic – especially since it’s about being bad ass.
However, the rest of the track is awesome, ladled with FreeSol’s progressive rap, rock and soul style. It’s got a nice marching band cum rock n’ roll feel, and the vocals on the chorus are stlyish. Best part of the song, however, is the video. It’s complete mayhem. I love it. So well edited and shot. Embedded below.
After having a Moog, an Andromeda, and a JP8080, I though I would have quenched my thirst for synthesizers for a while, but I haven’t. Above is what I really want, unfortunately they are extremely rare and probably go for over $20k. Oh well, one can dream. Anyway here are some really funky old (some REALLY old) tracks:
It’s already been established that White Hinterland’s Casey Dienel is amazing at putting her own entrancing spell on others’ work, as she’s turned out gorgeous, haunting renditions of songs by everyone from Francoise Hardy and Serge Gainsbourg to Arthur Russell, Neon Indian and Justin Timberlake (see below). Here, on WH’s new digital EP Eidolon, she takes on Monica’s “Don’t Take it Personal (Just One of Dem Days),” turning the 1995 radio/MTV hit into a glowing, cavernous dream-pop jam:
2010 has been a big year for Neon Gold replete with releases were extremely proud of, so it's fitting we bring the year to a close with the third single from an artist who has quickly become one of our flagship acts, the inimitable Penguin Prison. "Golden Train" was the first song we ever heard from the Penguin and remains one of his most essential tracks to date, coming off like Justin Timberlake fronting a DFA track, all heaven-sent vocals and Penguin's signature churning synths. It's absolutely massive, and the track we've been waiting to unleash on the world since first crossing paths with him nearly 18 months ago. A unique beast, it opens with a sparse vocal and synth arrangement and builds slowly throughout, evolving steadily as more and more layers are added to the mix until the song reaches a triumphant climax of spiraling synths and Penguin's falsetto'd vox by its conclusion. One of our absolute favorite tracks of the year, it's just another reason Penguin's forthcoming debut album should sit high atop your most anticipated albums of 2011 list.
You can stream the original above or get at the exclusive B-side remix from Pink Stallone - who you may remember from their killer remix of Marina & The Diamonds' "Obsessions" on Neon Gold way back when - for free download below. The whole package is out December 14th with preorder available now from the Neon Gold Shop and Puregroove, complete with artwork from the amazing FRAUGRAU and limited to only 300 copies worldwide. Song's like this don't happen all the time.
And instruments. But mostly, I'm pretty infatuated with Brett Domino's "hither come nerdish genius" interpretation of a number of top of the pop chart toppers. He's done Lady Gaga, Justin Timberlake, Ellie Goulding, and now he's graced us with a medley of Nelly Furtado tunes that span her entire career. Check out the video now, which features the songs: Maneater, Promiscuous, Say It Right, Turn Off The Lights, I’m Like A Bird and Night Is Young; all whilst using objects like kazoos, iPhone xylos, keytars, shower heads, bucket tops and more. More amazing than you can imagine.
Here’s a bit of a rushed mix I did for THE SHAKE, a weekly radio show LOTEKand I do every Friday night on KICK FM. Lotek and I are both out of town this week, hence the mix. It starts off with a bunch of robotdisco jams and gets into some house-flavoured breaks and ends with nu disco and tech house.
Holy hell it’s finally Friday. This has been a long ol’ week, but it’s equally been chock full of awesome.
What’s everyone up to this weekend? There’s lots of cool happening in the city, so I expect to see each and every one of you out and about.
Kylie Minogue has a new song. Bit of a yawner for a supposed "comeback" single, but I guarantee after a few more listens, I’ll be loving on All the Lovers. link
Tame Impala are streaming their entire album, Innerspeaker. Would be a wise move to go have a listen, because it’s solid as stone. link
Mary J. Blige has been tapped to play Nina Simone in an upcoming biopic. link
The Rolling Stones’ Keith Richards is set to release his autobiography in October. link
New tunes to grab this morning come courtesy of Gentleman Thieves, Chew Fu and Anton Glamb.
