GDD™ Spotlight: Lukas

01 11 2012

It was the beginning of October, and remixes for Crazy P‘s ‘Changes’ began to surface. Amongst the plethora of good renditions that I heard, one stood out more than any other, and it was from a Bristol artist that I had never come across before — Lukas. As I usually do when I find good new music from an unfamiliar moniker, I check back catalogs, social media sites, etc., and after going about this with Lukas I wanted to know more. So I reached out across the Atlantic to see what this producer was up to, and it turned out to be a lot more than I thought!

Click on after the jump to download a mix with numerous unreleased jams made exclusively for GDD™ and check out my interview with the multifaceted producer where we chat about his infamous party Alfresco Disco, the rising Bristol scene, and more.

Lukas – GDD™ Mix √++

Eats Everything + Lukas present The Eel – 0200 (Futureboogie)
Charlie Banks – Saying What (Lukas Remix) (Dirt Crew)
Crazy P – Changes (Lukas Remix)
Matthew Johnson – Dayz (Crosstown Rebels)
Rio + Prest – Freaky MF
Roman Flugel – Brasil Reprise (Dial)
DJ Master D – Mad Drumz (Lukas edit)
Prommer + Barck – Journey (Kink Dub)
Marlon D – Jesus Creates Sound (Strictly Rhythm)
J Phlip – Fever (KRL Remix)
Coat of Arms – Tone Music
Lukas + Christophe – Teardrops (Futureboogie)

Gotta Dance Dirty™: I always start off my interviews with the same question so might as well keep it going here. What’s your usual drink order sir?

Lukas: Depends on the situation. At the pub – A pint of ale. At the club they don’t serve that, so it’s a can of Red Stripe or a rum and Coke. Maybe some water too, if I’m feeling adventurous…

GDD™: You are a man that wears many hats: producer, DJ, promoter. What order would you put these in if you had to say that you were one above the other?

Lukas: At the moment I’m producing a lot, but I’m also DJing and promoting a lot too! – they inform each other. But lately I’ve been making quite a lot of tracks both on my own and with my the crew in Bristol and promoting Alfresco Disco, the party run with my friends.

GDD™: Can you tell us a little about the events that you throw in Bristol? I know that Bristol has been known as an artistic city within the UK. Do you see the scene there as different than London or Manchester?

Lukas: I put on an event called ‘Alfresco Disco’ with my good friends here in Bristol. It’s slowly but surely gathered cult status here. We don’t announce the location, or the lineup until the last minute – yet people come from far and wide to party with us. We put a lot of care and attention into the whole production, and of course we make sure the music is A1. In the past we’ve staged parties in the forest, in a coroners court, under railway bridges… the list goes on. And there’s so much more to come.

Alfresco Disco from Raspberry & Jam on Vimeo.

Bristol has it’s own vibe. I’ve always loved it, but in recent times it’s become really exciting – so much good music, art and a feeling of self-sufficiency, not looking to London or anywhere else to lead the way for inspiration. Pop-up restaurants, galleries, parties. Also since Futureboogie Records started, it’s helped to galvanise the scene here big time.

GDD™: What artists are coming up big in your town right now? Any names that we might not have heard of over on this continent yet? I know that you have some collaborations with some Bristol locals coming out soon correct?

Lukas: You’re gonna see a lot more artists coming out of Bristol next year. Eats Everything and myself have a project called ‘The EEL’ which you’ll be hearing more about soon. Keep an eye out for ‘Maison de Cheval‘ myself and Christophe’s project. Artist wise, Julio Bashmore is absolutely smashing it, the Waifs and Strays boys doing their thing. October, Type, Arkist, Appleblim, Behling and Simpson. The list goes on and on of underground artists in Bristol and you should check them out. Really – there’s too many to mention. Keep an eye out for two guys coming up Tom Rio and Fred Prest who are making some great music at the moment.

GDD™: Your fantastic Disco House remix for Crazy P was actually how I stumbled upon your work. How did that remix come about? Is this release your most popular to date?

Lukas: People seem to be into it! Pete Tong‘s been playing it on Radio 1 – which is nice! It was also a Mixmag choice download. The Crazy P guys are friends, so they sent me some parts and – et voila! I love Crazy P, so wanted to make sure I did a good job on it – keeping the original vibe but hopefully stepping up another gear for the rave….

GDD™: I see that you DJ and also have played live in the past from Glastonbury to Berlin. Do you DJ and play live under the Lukas moniker or do you have other projects that you use for different styles?

Lukas: I’ve done a few live sets and I’ve really enjoyed them. It’s satisfying and also you’re laying your balls on the line a bit more. But for now I’m DJing mainly and that’s such a pleasure. It’s a dark art, there’s always something more to learn.

GDD™: With so many sub-genres of House music these days, what does House music mean to you personally? Or in other words, what is true House to you?

Lukas: I don’t know what true House is. But for me House is music that makes you move and can also move you. Cheesy or what?

GDD™: What is coming up next for the producer/remixer side of Lukas? Can we expect the same type of sound that we heard in ‘Changes’?

Lukas: I’ve got some remixes coming up for Dirt Crew, Clouded Vision, Futureboogie Recordings. The sound? You’ll have to wait and see.

GDD™: How did you go about compiling tracks and making this mix for us? Any instructions on how to best enjoy it?

Lukas: The mix contains a lot of exclusive ‘never heard before’ stuff from me and friends… remixes, collaborations, and originals by others. It also includes some of the tracks that have been working the dancefloor for me in recent times. Joining the dots between different styles.

GDD™: I know you must dance out there in Bristol, but when you do, do you dance dirty?

Lukas: Of course I do! You can’t look directly at me when I’m dancing, you might go blind ;)

CONGALOID002 : Seka – Heritage EP

12 14 2011

For the second installment of Solo‘s freshly established Congaloid imprint slated for release on December 19th, the labelhead commissioned the young, groovy producer known as Seka, and surprise, surprise, he’s from Bristol. Bristol seems to be recreating itself as a hub for some of the best dance music today. With producers like Julio Bashmore, Eats Everything, and Seka synthesizing this fresh sound and rapidly releasing original tracks, it’s no wonder why Pete Tong gave the city a huge shout out on the Essential Mix a few weeks back. Here’s what Solo had to say about signing the youngblood:

“When I have received Andy’s EP I was quite surprised. At the time I was spending some weeks in Bali, and just starting to organise things, hoping to find the right people to work together with. I wrote on Facebook about my future label plans, and wasn’t really expecting demos just yet. Only few minutes later Seka sent me an email and asked to check these 2 songs. I felt straight away that those grooves had something right, so I tried them both that night, and even tho they were still rough demos, they worked a treat. People were smiling during those 2 mini-catchy-swing numbers, so I was sold. Seka became part of the adventure, and while I hope that you are gonna play this record, I am excited to have him in the Congaloid team, cause his new demos are sounding really good too…”

Julio Bashmore – Ensnare

12 11 2011

Future Boogie specialist Julio Bashmore is back with a delightfully natural ‘Riff Wrath’ EP to get down to.

After spending time sharpening his live mixing and productions skills in 2008/2009, Claude VonStroke’s label (Dirty Bird) signed an EP’s worth of Julio’s material for the Julio Bashmore EP. This breakthrough also meant a difficult decision: on the cusp of leaving for university Julio decided instead to remain in Bristol and install production and DJing as his primary focus.

‘Ensnare’, the song i have chosen to focus on, is full of unusual noises all put together to make a chilled out tune that is controlled by the wishy washy drum pattern.

Tropicool’s Picks
Pat Lok – No Shame (Goldroom Remix)
A bottle rinses up on the shore. It is filled with euphoria, sunshine, and a crescendo from outer space. Our good buddy Josh (Goldroom) keeps pumping out instant classics that will make your soul glow.

Miguel Campbell – Baby I Got It (Edit Murphy Remix)
Edit Murphy is apparently here to stay. He gets deeper than his other productions here, so purse your lips, bob your head, and don’t go home tonight. Caus’ baby you got it!

Luther Vandross – I Wonder (SAH Re-Froth)
SAH was foraging in a long forgotten place between space and time and stubbled upon a funky ball of tits. He had the funk, and had to keep the funk alive. It’s the spawn of a new time where light up dance floors glisten off a tan butt poached up on a lengthy pair of stems.

Christophe – The Force (Julio Bashmore Piano Mix)
Beautiful piano rework of a rather amazing original. This instrumental journey will consist of copious amounts of cocaine with Stevie Wonder while floating on a cloud.

Moby – The Right Thing ft. Inyang Bassey (Cosmonauts Remix)
The Cosmonauts can do no wrong. Surely a Moby foundation can’t hurt either. Space disco is in, just like monster tits stuffed beneath an undersized “GO DEEP” tee.

GDD™ Morning Update: The Prodigy, Julio Bashmore, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, RBMA World Tour, Deadmau5, RA Poll, UMF, Occupy Musicians, Burning Man

11 21 2011

Due to some technical difficulties on Friday, I was unable to post the regular GDD™ Morning Update, but we’re back to give you a great start to your week. Today’s news includes The Prodigy’s new album, a new Julio Bashmore EP, a Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike tour after-movie, a Red Bull Music Academy World Tour in London video, Deadmau5′s new 4D projections event, the Resident Advisor poll, Ultra Music Festival, Occupy Musicians, and Burning Man. Read the info and watch several videos after the jump.

The Prodigy: New Album in Late 2012

UK trailblazers The Prodigy have been at work on a follow-up to Invaders Must Diesince 2010, and an end to the hard work is in sight. While up til now the group has been vague about when to expect its sixth studio album, it’s definitely coming in 2012 (if you can hold Liam Howlett to his word).

In a Facebook post last night, The Prodigy announced its only UK festival show for 2012 – and they haven’t gone with one of the flagship dance weekenders like Global Gathering or Creamfields. Instead, they’ll take the stage as Friday night headliners of grizzled rock festival Download (the other headliners are Metallica and reunited relicsBlack Sabbath), “playin some new songs for the first time from our next album due later 2012”.

So, have The Prodigy still got a definitive album in them? While we await the verdict, fans can busy themselves with World’s On Fire, the band’s live album and DVD released this year. There’s no denying their power onstage, so let’s hope that’s channelled into album number six…

Julio Bashmore Preps New EP for Futureboogie

As the end of 2011 creeps closer with each passing day, it seems that producers and labels are all scrambling to put out one last single before the calendar flips to 2012. Add Bristol’s Julio Bashmore to the list of artists getting into the year-end action, as he’ll be releasing a new EP, Riff Wrath (artwork above), on December 19. Set to drop via theFutureboogie label, the two-song record is described as a “beautifully filmic piece of house music” that’s also a “perfect embodiment of Bashmore’s fluid modern soul and understated drive with a dusty haze of of cosmic strumming.” While that kind of fluffy language reads like pretty standard PR speak, Bashmore’s previous 2011 releases—Everyone Needs a Theme Tune, Batty Knee Dance, and “Father Father”—have been undeniably great, so it’s certainly not out of the realm of possibility that Riff Wrath will offer similarly high-quality productions. The EP’s tracklist is below.

Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike Smash the USA – The Official Tour After-Movie

They came, they saw, they didn’t just conquer – they unequivocally smashed it. The hottest act to come out of Belgium, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike hit the shores of North America last month for their debut tour of the massive two-nation continent, receiving a rapturous response from fans and rave reviews from critics.
From the Big Apple of New York to the sprawling deserts of Las Vegas, from the heat of Miami to the Halloween craziness of San Bernadino, to the frozen far north of Toronto and Edmonton in Canada – wherever the brotherly duo went fans new and old were infected by their trademark sound. The biggest house and electro drops known to man swept across dance floors during two weeks that climaxed with a jaw dropping set at California’s legendary Escape From Wonderland festival.

Following every beat, every build-up, every breakdown and every bomb across the country was a crack film crew dedicated solely to catching the action as it happened. And while we were teased along the way thanks to Dimitri & Mike’s daily tour diary coverage on www.dancingastronaut.com, the full Director’s Cut edition is finally in our hands, thanks of course to the power of YouTube.

With packed clubs, throbbing dance floors, eye-popping light shows, raw musical power, over-sized sandwiches, a bear for a taxi driver (we kid you not!), and a spine-tingling, goose bump-inducing entrance to Escape From Wonderland that bought the house down, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike: SMASH THE USA gives you a unique insight into the sheer electricity of a night out with Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike.

So whether you were there or whether you weren’t, sit back and enjoy as Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike bring you SMASH THE USA. It’s one hell of a ride…

Video Premiere: RBMA World Tour in London

The recent Red Bull Music Academy World Tour included all sorts of amazing events around the globe, but perhaps none was as celebrated (or exciting) as the stop in London. The latest installment of the ongoing video series documenting the tour includes behind-the-scenes footage of the RBMA takeover of the iconic London Eye. Somehow, RBMA corralled 30 different crews of DJs, artists, producers, and labels and installed them in the different pods of the giant observation wheel for a once-in-a-lifetime dance party. The entire thing was streamed live online (we were certainly tuned in here at XLR8R HQ), but this video offers a closer look at what it was actually like to be there. Watch it above, and, just to get you feeling even more depressed that you couldn’t attend, peruse the list of all-star participants below.

Burning Man’s New Lottery Ticketing System Provokes Outrage

Earlier this month, Burning Man’s newsletter announced a new lottery system for buying tickets to the 2012 edition of the the seven-day experimental arts and music festival.

It works like this: During a two-week registration period that begins next week, buyers pick a “pricing tier” and enter a credit card number. Lotteries are then held for each tier, choosing names at random. Since tickets aren’t sold at walk-up outlets or at the gate, if you aren’t picked, you might not be able to go.

Organizers call the new system a solution to last year’s ticketing problems. In July, Burning Man tickets sold out for the first time, opening the door for scalpers, who jacked up $360 ticket prices to as much as $5,000.

But the lottery system is already stirring outrage. Commenters on Burning Man forums are worried that they won’t be able to get tickets for all the members in their camps, and that scalpers will overwhelm the process. Long-time Burners, meanwhile, worry the new system will exclude those who have contributed and supported the event for years.

“People hear the word ‘lottery’ and it reminds them of taking chances. It’s really just a tool for managing the flow of tickets,” countered Marian Goodell, Burning Man’s director of business and communications, to Huffington Post.

Your first shot at registering for tickets goes from November 28th to December 11th. Only 3,000 tickets will be available in this round, however, and, at $420, they’re even more expensive than last go around. Eventually, however, 40,000 will be sold, which is more than for the 2011 event. There will also be more low-income tickets this year, organizers say, but details have not yet been announced.

“[T]here’s only a small percentage of people who won’t be able to get tickets at all,” insisted Goodell.

And the amount of tickets sold may continue to increase. Organizers are petitioning the Federal Bureau of Land Management to increase the amount of attendees permitted — currently 50,000 — to 70,000 by 2016.

Better to burn out than to fade away? Maybe, but Burning Man seems poised to become something totally unrecognizable.
