JUNIP

09 06 2010

Junip are a Swedish Gothenburg-based rock band featuring José González, most known for his highly acclaimed solo work. They released the Black Refuge EP at the end of 2005, and after a five year hiatus, finally have their new album “Fields” to be released on September 14th of this year. There was also a free EP released online titled “Rope and Summit”, featuring four tracks.

MP3: Junip – Don’t Let It Pass (requested to be removed)
MP3: Junip – To the Grain (requested to be removed)

And speaking of Gonzalez’s, Chilly Gonzales’ new album “Ivory Tower” is out and the Erol Alkan rework of ‘Never Stop’ is very cool indeed.

Back in the game…

07 06 2010
I apologise for the lack of mp3 posts from myself. I now can safely say that all degrees/holidays/celebrations are behind me and it's finally time for me to get back to the unremittingly circular, downright geeky, hermit-like, but not entirely soul-crushing life of the incessant blogger. Without further ado...

Last month Sei A dropped his Lazers Ep on Turbo Recordings. It's a beautifully understated and finely produced EP, something we've come to expect from Sei A but not from Turbo of late, whose penchant for all things brash, bold and bombastic have come to dominate the label. The 4 tracker is minimal techno for the most part, but it's 'Paraphaze' that really does the job. Punchy, metallic techy beats are laced with a strangely melodic synth line:

Sei A - Paraphaze [pelski highly recommends]{Buy}

This fun tech-houser weilds deep, dubby low-slung bass under the cogent smack of a hefty snare. For an electro-tech take, the D-Unity remix is worth a see-in too. Thanks go to both DJ Neotoric whose mix I found this track and to our friends over at Kidcity for posting it:

Richard Dinsdale - Boom Boom [pelski highly recommends] {Buy}

A slightly older one this, but a beautiful, simple house remix of a famous song that works incredibly well (incidentally Jori Hulkkonen recently remixed 'Rebel Without A Cause' from Sei A's above-mentioned EP). The clatter of house percussion, charmingly organic and upbeat, fits nicely with Joze Gonazalez' familiar croon.

Joze Gonzalez - Crosses (Jori Hulkkonen Mix) [pelski highly recommends]

Jesse Rose handed out this edit for free, and, although its been around for a couple of months, such a superb freebie is a rarity. This is an edit in the true sense of the word: it's not much different from the original, it shuffles and shudders forward with greater bounce, perhaps, than the original. Yes there's a few more beats in there, but the sublime, dreamy essence of the original remains untouched, with it's searing strings and soothing vocals snips that elegantly fold into one another. The Sleep Less (Night Two) Ep is one of his best releases in a long time, buy it:

Jesse Rose - You Know It (Jesse's Made To Play Edit) [pelski highly recommends] {buy}

This track is the kind of noisy, clamorous stuff you pretend you're far too old for, but, deep down, you love it. Yes there's fuzzy rave bass horns, but also some sparse tribal hits and a wavering soul sample that's incredible infectious. Tipanic is a side-project from dancehall
producer Luke Rich and he's handing out the whole 11-track album 'Lazed & Confused' for free here:

Tipanic - Uuhh Alarm

Ramon Tapia's choppy, chipper brand of dancefloor house has been catching everyone's attention. All his production, although often labelled as big room tech-house, are consistently distinctive and interesting. 'Say What' and 'This Groove' are two of his finest this year, but this remix has a quirky feel emanating from the clunky, slightly off-kilter rhythm. (mp3 reduced to 128kbps).

Kaiser Souzai - Hurry Caine (Ramon Tapia Remix)

The original of 'Freeki Mutha F cker', by Detroit legend Moodyman, possesses his trademark ambling and idiosyncratic structure, deep and yet unpredictable, beautiful and yet befuddling. Here New Zealand's Choas In The CBD team up with their buddie Tom Lawson for a similarly slow jam but with some whip-lashed beats under those sleazy vocals for a more dancey take, with some of the original's more jazzy, funky elements still faintly shimmering in the distance. Great remix:

Moodymann - Freaky Mother Fucker (Chaos In The CBD & Tom Lawson Bootleg)

Bonus:

SunnyBeach HappySlap Mardigras - Conta (Momma's Boy Remix)

WEEKEND WARRIORS

05 01 2010

What up dirty dancers?! The weekend’s off to a flyer and we have some brand new beats to assist you with the next 36 hours of mayhem, before a massive week in music kicks off. May 4th is a big day for the dance, seeing the release of
Rusko‘s hotly anticipated ‘O.M.G.!’ record on MadDecent (you can stream it from their site here), not to mention the follow up to 2009′s ‘Los Angeles LP’ from the Brainfeeder label’s Flying Lotus, entitled ‘Cosmogramma’. On Tuesday, Scion Audio Visual are also set to drop a new EP from Dub Police‘s veteran MC Rod Azlan, and the guys over at Scion were kind enough to send us over a promo for a first glimpse.

The record sees Azlan team up with his buddies The Others, Rusko and Markomen, who have produced some vibin’ mellow dubs for Azlan to spit over. Starkey‘s remix of ‘Jah Live’ is filled with glitchy synths and distorted basslines; replacing the roots dub feel of the Rusko produced original mix. Meanwhile, Unitz take the keys of original of ‘Selektah!’ (produced by The Others) up to a major key – If the original was made for smoking zoots in underground clubs, the Unitz track takes things above ground for some beach blazin’.

One guy I’ve been paying a lot of attention to lately is Audio Phreaks artist Bar 9, from the UK. His dubs have been kicking up a lot of heat lately and his sets are annihilation on a small scale. Example‘s ‘Kickstarts’ EP is set to drop at the beginning of June, featuring remixes from the expected dutch house crowd, but this for me, is the reason you’ll want to purchase the EP on Beatport – it blows the other tracks out of the water. Bar 9 is definitely one to be keeping an eye out for in 2010, so watch this space.

One of the latest signings to the Trouble & Bass label, The Boogaloo Crew have been putting out some big tracks recently. Their remix of DRT‘s ‘Rising Sun’ was what put me onto them at the end of 2009, and this new bootleg of Jose Gonzalez ‘Crosses’ is pretty dank. From the UK, these boys have an awesome work ethic, also playing out as side-project Dark Sky, which has recently been picked up by the Bristol based Black Acre label. Dark Sky produce some sick UK Garage, keep your eyes and ears peeled for their remix of The xx ‘Crystalised’, a blitz track that’s due to drop sometime soon.
From one Trouble & Bass artist to another, AC Slater‘s just been remixed by Doorly, who GDD featured a few weeks ago. Just when I was confidently bigging up his move from dubstep to more of a funky sound, he goes and puts out another electro-dub track. Not sure what to make of this effort though, I dropped it last night into Doctor P‘s ‘Sweet Shop’; not a fan of the spin-backs, they kind of do my nut in, but take those guys out and you’ve got a pretty clean track.

Big ups to Palms Out Sounds for this next one, I picked it out of their Remix Sunday zipper last week and meant to post it sooner. Jazz and soul into dubstep; full marks for innovation. With dubs raining out of all genres, I was pretty surprised this hadn’t been done to death yet. High Rankin, a sickeningly good dubstep producer from Brighton, UK has teamed up again with Evolve or Die to produce a huge tune.
BONUS:
I’d describe this one as Baltimore House-step. Buying into the insanity of Gorillaz‘s nonsensical new single featuring De La Soul; Toddla slams out a melee of 2-step, wonky bass and the well know Lyn Collins B’more House sample. Well worth a look.
