Change is Gradual

06 27 2011

Processory is a group comprised of two producers, Jori Hulkkonen and Jerry Valuri. They released a self-titled album in 2007 which showed different sounds from these more club-oriented producers. Change is Gradual, their new album released in May, shows the group growing even further, with both gentlemen sharing duties on singing, producing, playing, etc.

It’s a very chilled-out record but it moves along at an enjoyable pace. They released an EP earlier this month featuring two remixes of album tracks, and plan on releasing another tomorrow featuring a remix by Hercules & Love Affair. He’s a remix from the first EP, Recovery Measures by one of my favorite producers.

Processory – Young Italians (CFCF Remix) removed by request

In other CFCF news, he released an instrumental EP on his Bandcamp last week. Get that here for $3.

S.W.O.T. ep/TURBO/JORIFinnish producer Jori Hulkkonen has been a behind some of my favorite releases over the years from his earlier days on F Communications and now the omnipresent and ever creative electro label from Montreal. Turbo records which is owned and managed by Jori's' good friend Tiga may be the reason for Jori's freedom and new found minimalism. Straight forward and simple yet compelling in their banging bottoms and scorching pads and synths the 91st release for Turbo entitled 'S.W.O.T.' carries his ideal of heavy melodic influences with his first two cuts "Strengths" and "Weaknesses" and more acidic, caustic undertones on the "Opportunities" and the included track "Threats". Back in the game…

07 06 2010
I apologise for the lack of mp3 posts from myself. I now can safely say that all degrees/holidays/celebrations are behind me and it's finally time for me to get back to the unremittingly circular, downright geeky, hermit-like, but not entirely soul-crushing life of the incessant blogger. Without further ado...

Last month Sei A dropped his Lazers Ep on Turbo Recordings. It's a beautifully understated and finely produced EP, something we've come to expect from Sei A but not from Turbo of late, whose penchant for all things brash, bold and bombastic have come to dominate the label. The 4 tracker is minimal techno for the most part, but it's 'Paraphaze' that really does the job. Punchy, metallic techy beats are laced with a strangely melodic synth line:

Sei A - Paraphaze [pelski highly recommends]{Buy}

This fun tech-houser weilds deep, dubby low-slung bass under the cogent smack of a hefty snare. For an electro-tech take, the D-Unity remix is worth a see-in too. Thanks go to both DJ Neotoric whose mix I found this track and to our friends over at Kidcity for posting it:

Richard Dinsdale - Boom Boom [pelski highly recommends] {Buy}

A slightly older one this, but a beautiful, simple house remix of a famous song that works incredibly well (incidentally Jori Hulkkonen recently remixed 'Rebel Without A Cause' from Sei A's above-mentioned EP). The clatter of house percussion, charmingly organic and upbeat, fits nicely with Joze Gonazalez' familiar croon.

Joze Gonzalez - Crosses (Jori Hulkkonen Mix) [pelski highly recommends]

Jesse Rose handed out this edit for free, and, although its been around for a couple of months, such a superb freebie is a rarity. This is an edit in the true sense of the word: it's not much different from the original, it shuffles and shudders forward with greater bounce, perhaps, than the original. Yes there's a few more beats in there, but the sublime, dreamy essence of the original remains untouched, with it's searing strings and soothing vocals snips that elegantly fold into one another. The Sleep Less (Night Two) Ep is one of his best releases in a long time, buy it:

Jesse Rose - You Know It (Jesse's Made To Play Edit) [pelski highly recommends] {buy}

This track is the kind of noisy, clamorous stuff you pretend you're far too old for, but, deep down, you love it. Yes there's fuzzy rave bass horns, but also some sparse tribal hits and a wavering soul sample that's incredible infectious. Tipanic is a side-project from dancehall
producer Luke Rich and he's handing out the whole 11-track album 'Lazed & Confused' for free here:

Tipanic - Uuhh Alarm

Ramon Tapia's choppy, chipper brand of dancefloor house has been catching everyone's attention. All his production, although often labelled as big room tech-house, are consistently distinctive and interesting. 'Say What' and 'This Groove' are two of his finest this year, but this remix has a quirky feel emanating from the clunky, slightly off-kilter rhythm. (mp3 reduced to 128kbps).

Kaiser Souzai - Hurry Caine (Ramon Tapia Remix)

The original of 'Freeki Mutha F cker', by Detroit legend Moodyman, possesses his trademark ambling and idiosyncratic structure, deep and yet unpredictable, beautiful and yet befuddling. Here New Zealand's Choas In The CBD team up with their buddie Tom Lawson for a similarly slow jam but with some whip-lashed beats under those sleazy vocals for a more dancey take, with some of the original's more jazzy, funky elements still faintly shimmering in the distance. Great remix:

Moodymann - Freaky Mother Fucker (Chaos In The CBD & Tom Lawson Bootleg)

Bonus:

SunnyBeach HappySlap Mardigras - Conta (Momma's Boy Remix)

Uni for this semester is coming to a close (exams in two weeks) and thus, I’m trying to get all these tracks out on the blog, one step at a time. Let’s progress onwards shall we disciples? > > > >

Heard this one in a Revenge mix a while back. Acid Pauli makes it cool deeep. And who doesn’t love that Gaye vocal?

MP3: Marvin Gaye – What’s Going On (Acid Pauli Remix)

Here’s a nice remix by The Popular People’s Front released in 2009 on Redux. Buy here.

MP3: Drrtyhaze – New York City Jacks Popular (Peoples Front Remix)

“Deeper” by Nacho Lovers just dropped on Fool’s Gold and the always wonderful Azari & III performs superbly on the remixing duties. Purchase on Beatport – grab the CFCF remix as well.

Nacho Lovers - Deeper (Azari & III Remix)

Hercules & Love Affair aka. Andy Butler has done a lovely remix of Jori Hulkkonen’s “I am Dead”. Other remixes out there are by CFCF and WhoMadeWho. Purchase the 12″ from Rubadub – out on Sugarcane Records.

Jori Hulkkonen Feat. Jerry Valuri - I am Dead (Hercules and Love Affair Remix)

Rush Hour are reissuing releases by critical Chicago house label Trax – this one, done by Jamie Principle, is taken from ‘The House of Trax Vol. 3′. Purchase this ‘bad boy’ here.

MP3: Jamie Principle – Bad Boy (Unreleased Demo Mix)

Innervision’s Dixon has an unofficial release on the obscure Philomena label which features two great edits – Romanthony’s ‘The Wanderer’ (contains kick drum and bassline sample from ‘Martin Buttrich – Hunted’) and on the flip is Lykki Li’s ‘Dance Dance Dance’. Massive. Try and find this although I think the 12″ quite sold out.

MP3: Romanthony – The Wanderer (Dixon Edit)

From the people that brought us the Discos Capablanca label comes this new offshoot. Los Massieras is a re-edit project formed by two Berlin DJs aiming to bring “a fresh approach to the art of bastardization.” ‘Boogity Boogity Boogity’ is their first EP, which also launches the new label Banamania. Anyone who knows me personally knows that I love a nice ripe banana and this release is no exception (and no readers, that remark isn’t suggesting anything fishy…). Mutant discooooowww.

MP3: Los Massieras – Boogity Master

Oh Danny boy. Two great edits here.

MP3: Chicago – Street Player (Danny Krivit Re-Edit)
MP3: Giorgio Moroder – Evolution (Danny Krivit Re-Edit Evolutionary Dub)

Dimitri from Paris is releasing his fifth compilation for BBE in May entitled ‘Get Down With the Philly Sound’. This particular selection focuses on the “Philadelphia disco sound that was so successful throughout the ’70s, and paved the way for disco fever to spread across the United States.”

MP3: Philly Devotions – Hurt So Bad (Dimitri from Paris Super Disco Blend)

Second release from Bruce Ivery for Stilove4music, containing more rawness, jackiness and punch than his last. Includes an edit of an old Lil Louis track “I Called U (Why’d U Fall)”.

MP3: Ivery Bruce – Track 1

Thought I might throw in a little DJ Harvey as well. Released on his Black Cock Records label, ‘Love Is Everything’ a re-edit of “The Mighty Clouds of Joy – Everything Is Love” on ABC Records.

MP3: DJ Harvey – Love Is Everything

Kimberly Isaac Moyes (KIM;1/2 of The Presets) has been a busy beaver – that’s when he isn’t caught up with his Presets duties. Here are remixes he did for Tame Imapala, Via Tania and also AKA JK (Jonathan Kreinik – aka Limozine Unlimited aka Tanline; please check out the Runaway remix of this as well as it is a bomb). You can really feel his love for tech-house/prog/techno/et. al. You get the drift.

MP3: AKA JK – Someone Out There… (KIM Remix)
MP3: Via Tania – Fields (KIM Remix)
MP3: Midnight Juggernauts – Vital Signs (KIM Remix)

I really love this Tame Impala cover as well:

VILLAH NAH RAINMAKER JORI HULKKONEN EXTENDED AND DUB

12 21 2009

rainpour

Just in time for our goodbyes to 2009 and the hellos to 2010 (hover boards anyone?) are two overly seductive mixes from an early pick of the year Villah Nah topped by the consistent and lush Jori Hulkkonen.

Much like the heavy breathing from a meet with a mysterious other.
