An Interview with Jet Project

12 15 2010
Jet Project - consisting of T-bone (Timmy Stewart) and Yankee Zulu (Johnny McIver) - will be gracing the decks this Saturday in Room 2, hosted by us. Famous for their techy house productions, their surging, sub-aquatic bombs'll lay waste to any dancefloor. But they've also been consistently wowing critics: 2009 album Heads In The Clouds was hailed across the board; recent releases on Get Physical and Beef Records have been praised no end by DJ Mag, iDJ and Mixmag; and the Irish duo have a reputation for turning in the best remixes.

I sent a couple of questions to Jet Project and here's what they had to say:

How would you describe Jet Project’s sound to those who haven’t heard your music before?

Bass heavy house music.

What is it that drew you to house music in the first place?

For a place that's relatively small there's always been a healthy house and techno scene in Belfast and we both fell in love with four four as teenagers. The buzz we get off the hypnotic groove or punch on a decent house track still makes us tingle, get excited and generally keeps us devoted to what we do. It's been like that since day one I guess.

You guys had been Djing separately for quit a long time before you met. How and when did you decide to join forces?

A few chance meetings over the years in record shops, club nights, gigs and after parties meant we soon discovered we had almost identical tastes in electronic music. We both had residencies at the same club for a while and after a few sets together the chemistry was soon apparent, so about three years ago the Jet Project was formed.

It’s notoriously difficult to craft a decent house album, and yet yours ('Heads In The Cloud') was a hit with both dance floors and critics. How did you set about achieving that difficult balance between a collection of dancefloor tunes and a flowing, listenable album?

We did think about this a lot before we started work on it and we decided to approach it in a fairly similar vein to a DJ mix. Starting with a proper intro to the first track first, then working on the next helped with a natural progression to the next track and so on. This helped to give the album a flow with some peaks and drops at crucial moments and a couple of proper closing tracks helped to give it a completed feel.

Do you think house music is in a good place right now?

Yes and no, the wealth of amazing stuff out there can be almost overwhelming at times but the amount of illegal downloads is making it had for underground artists to make a return on their music.

Is the ease of production - a result of readily available softwares like ableton - a good thing? Or is it encouraging sloppy, rushed productions?

It ain't the gear it's the ear as they say and there will always be examples of good and bad tracks out there. It's just made it easier for people to get into production so that can only be a good thing esp if people hone their skills as they go along.

How’s things going with your label Extended Play?

It's been going really well, we have been good friends with Chris Duckenfield for years so it seemed like the right team to be behind a label. We've got the tenth release ready to drop in Jan with another three waiting in the wings and we've been picking up loads of support from our peers along the way. So far so good really.

You each have separate projects, T-bone and Yankee Zulu? Can you tell us how they differ from Jet Project?

The Jet Project is definitely a meeting of styles, John's love for a more jackin sound and mine for more synthy, electronic stuff. When we make music separately it always sounds different and together it combines to form the JP sound. The Yankee Zulu stuff is generally a lot more wonky than what we make together and my T-Bone stuff is usually more raw and stripped back I guess.

John I love the Yankee Zulu stuff, my one of my favourites has to be your collaboration with Worthy, ‘Concumbia’. Absolutely massive tune. Will you be going back into the studio with him again at any point?

John: I was just in the studio with Worthy last week actually, he was doing a European tour and bopped over to Belfast for a couple of days to hang out and do another collab. I'm happy to say we got it nailed and should be coming out sometime next year.

Jet Project have a huge following in Belfast. And you run some very popular nights, including one at Yello. How are they going? Do you feel an integral part of the house scene there?

We have a monthly residency at Yello but we don't actually run those parties, that's really down to Aaron and Lawrence who do a great job on that side of things. We've been an integral part of the scene here for years though and we like to think that we represent our city globally when it comes to making good quality underground house music.

As a team do you ever have any musical difference?

No not at all, we totally respect each others opinions and as long as it gets the two thumbs up it goes in. We can have our own tastes at certain times but we also go for 90% of the same tracks when we select music to play out, which is why we work so well together as DJs and producers.

Timmy you mentioned last time that the vocals on ‘Understand This’ were from sung by you? Very impressive…

It was just a case of stepping up to the mic as we wanted more than a vocal sample on that track and I had something stuck in my head. It was very well received though and people never even thought it was one of us on vocals, so I may step up again on our next album.

Two of my favourite Jet Project tracks are ‘Message From Chi-Town’ and ‘Understand This’? Do you guys have any personal favourites?

Definitely the two you mentioned here and it's nice to hear that as a lot of work went into those tracks compared to others. We are happy with the new Snatch! release too as we think we captured a feeling across those two tracks that we aim to pursue.

I’m very excited about ‘U Know’ on Riva Starr’s label! How’d that come about?

We played with Riva at Yello and he asked us for some goodies, shortly after the gig we sent him ‘U Know’ and he loved it.

What’s your studio set-up like?

Pretty basic tbh, we’ve got a decent PC, a novation midi keyboard, a stack of plug ins and samples and we just purchased some lovely new Mackie monitors.

What’s good/bad about coming from Belfast?

The people here are very down to earth and know how to party but the licensing laws are a joke and hold the nightlife back no end.

Any artists you’re particularly enjoying right now?

Santos, Maya Jane Coles, Kink, Davide Squillace, Solomun, H.O.S.H, Daniel Steinberg, Riva Starr, Ross Evana & Tom Flynn are currently impressing but there is so much good decent stuff about if you are prepared to look properly and not be lazy.

And what lies ahead for Jet Project in 2011?

Working on our album for Snatch!, singles on Get Physical, Gruuv & Deadfish, a stack of remix work, more releases on Extended Play, launching a new label entitled JET and work on a live show.

Thanks JP, very much looking forward to your set this Saturday.

We've pulled together a number of free mp3s that've been given away by the artists over the last few years, to give a little taster of what lies ahead...

With one foot firmly cemented in the roots of dance music, alongside an intimidatingly strong reputation, we give you Jesse Rose. Renowned as one of Berlin’s busiest men, he needs little introduction to those who know. Having run Front Room Recordings and Made To Play over the last 10 respective years, he’s worked closely with label playmates Riva Starr, Jan Driver, Renaissance man, Jamie Anderson and Switch to name but a few. We have no doubt that Mr. Jesse Rose will be shaking the place to the proverbial ground, making it an absolute pleasure to have him down for the occasion.

They’ve always maintained their say when it comes to duked up tribal tech house, and if their last performance at the November Pelski vs Jackmode was anything to go by, then I’d strongly advise you to bring your hard hat for heavy duty safe house protection. Our headlining label boss Jesse Rose made these boys the party starting residents at the official Made To Play parties at Panorama Bar in Berlin, lets just hope they serve that special dose of spanked rhythms for us at Counter Culture again.

Zombie Disco Squad - Danca Do Zumbi

His recent remix of Aloe Blac’s ‘I Need A Dollar’ hit over 1000 downloads and 3000 plays on Soundcloud in a mere few weeks. Such antics have affirmed his place as a worthy hitter on the recent ‘5 Years of Made To Play’ compilation, not just as an artist, but as Jesse Rose’s official assistant engineer and label mixer. Let’s hope both players are up for a re-hash of the magic moment that was the Miami Music Conference a few summers back, where Jesse & Oliver went back to back for 3 hours on the main-stage. You gotta give Mr. $ some credit since he ditched his days flipping burgers in the back kitchen, with his name now firmly stamped on the big menus, where he’s smiling with a sweet tooth that’s flipped and fried clubland for pudding.

Flying in from Belfast for their second showing under the Pelski spotlight are Jet Project (only, this time we have both of them). Signed to Booka Shade's Get Physical as well as releasing a slew of impressive house and techno tunes on Viva, Darkroom Dubs, Intimacy Music and their own imprint Get Digital. Their 2009 album 'Heads In The Clouds', was a 2009 must-have, filled with deep and dubby tribal cuts, house groovers and throbbing techno bangers; each track as intricately constructed as the next. Some stunning recent releases have seen yet more hype lauded upon Jet Project in 2010, including ‘Message From Chi-Town’, their ode to Chicago house, and ‘Understand This’ a lucid, techy track, riding an infectious soulful sample. Their most recent release comes from their own imprint Extended Play, with remix duties picked up by Rampa & Re.You, Half Inch Jack, Buckley, Bubba, and Jon Woodall.

MACKAVELI

Fabric's notorious MACKAVELI will be laying down the twisted 2-step and sharp techno cuts. His sets have come renowned for his seamless blend of new and old garage with up-to-the-minute techno and house. Without fail, every Mack mix carries a handful of hidden gems he should've kept quiet about...

SOLID GOLD & PARK RANGER

The party-starting Trouble Vision duo SOLID GOLD & PARK RANGER never fail to get people moving on the dancefloor with their extensive and impeccable taste in techno and house. Solid Gold ended the first Pelski night with a bang, only this time, there's two of them...

CHARLES DARKLY

Pelski resident and co-writer Darkly will be warming up with anything from deep and percussive house to big-room dub techno.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We've got a couple of bootleg/freebies from Jet Project to give away. Timmy, one half of Jet Project, has remixed the classic Area 10 house record 'Get It Right', adding some smacking snares and cutting the extended diva section of the track, snipping it into a smaller sample and, in doing so, retaining the delicious old school essence of the original. Can't get enough of this re-edit:

Big thumping, dubby techno beats:

Jet Project - Time [pelski highly recommends]

Two dark and brooding bootlegs with some techy bounce:

Jet Project - Back To Better Days
The Mack-man has put together this lovely mix for us in preparation for Saturday:

Klasse

07 24 2010

Klasse Recordings out of Berlin just put out their inaugural release, “Bartok” comes courtesy of label co-founder Luca Lozano who teams up with Sacha Robotti for a rhytmic and galloping trumpet filled track that should wreck havoc on dancefloors. The release also features excellent remixes from Siopis, Jet Project and Cloud Study who all goes in different directions, Siopis gives us a deep version all while Jet Project ups the house ante for a peak time explosion and Cloud Study settles for a soothingly lazy disco/house take.

For those in need of a taste, here’s a label showcase mix by Luca Lozano and Sacha Robotti.

“Our mix showcases samples from the first release, as well as some unreleased and unofficial material by Klasse artists. The rest of the selection was not about the newest and most exclusive titles, but rather a collection of tracks that we love very much, ones that we will always return too. Making a mix for home listening is always an interesting task and we have aimed for a flow that is somewhere in-between the intensity of the dancefloor and the attention that can be given whilst traveling and listening.”

Tracklist for the mix is located after the jump.

The Great Escape

03 09 2010

Been sitting around this cafe all day drinking coffee and trying to read various books for uni, and to my surprise I became distracted by silly repetitive noises once more. So instead of remaining idle I decided to cash in on the free wi-fi alongside a suspicious latte, and began to upload beats onto the YCCMP server. For some reason the wi-fi crashed due to my mass upload, causing a disgruntled mob of glowing hubs around the ramshackle cafe to gaze ominously for the culprit, whilst a burly manager surfaced from behind the bar. Considering I had the most conspicuous haircut there, I made a scanty hop and skip to the exit, leaving my platter of smoke salmon and cream cheese behind. These are the daily trials we endure, to ensure your feet are glued to the dance-floor people...we love it though. Now, back to business...

'IDJ Magazine' branded these Belfast boys with their top tune seal of approval mid 2009, delegating a straight 10/10 for their superb 'Black Arts' e.p. Whilst their label boss Mr Paul Woolford sat on yet another winning ticket, as big room killers such as 'Tooth n Bone' plucked the grizzle from the speaker cone. It's therefore no surprise the leaders of our dance-floors convened to confirm such praises for Jet Project, as flags were waved high by the likes of Laurent Garnier, Luciano, Danny Tenaglia and Stephan Bodzin, when their 'Pearl Driver' e.p dropped. The 'Let's Do It" (12 mix') is a thickly caked slow burner, with a twinge of tribal dub up in the mix.

Jet Project - Let's Do It (12" Mix)

A crescendo of crunchy house stabs intertwine themselves around a soulful vocal on Ryhan Harden's dubbed tech-house production. The repetition of the vocal sample "Help Me" ironically serves itself, as Ryhan saves our ears with his 3am warehouse vibes. It's the fast paced jump up hi-hat frequency that really keeps this dubstep influenced house track really on top of it's groove.

Rhyan Harden - Night Train (V.I.P)

Jay West is one of South America's finest funk infused house producers, notoriously responsible for keeping the classic organic underground sounds of party flavoured funk sprouting from it's roots. Jay's fresh grooves will rouse all those budding wall flowers off their highchairs, and by the end of the night you'll be pulling jazz hands by the poolside with Daniel Steinberg. Eric Davenport leaves us with an excellent make over of the original.

Jay West - Let It Ride (Eric Davenport Remix)

I plugged my favourite newcomer 'Milt Mortez' a few weeks back in my promo mix for the official YCCMP Party. Since he dropped the excellent piece of upbeat tribalism that was 'Lungisani', he's finally receiving some worthy attention from the likes of the Sound Pellegrino crew, with Bambounou dropping 'Lungisani' in his new mix. Here's a couple of new tracks he's sent me in full quality, and be sure to look out for his alien invasion of 'Pluto', which we'll be dropping with a string of remixes very soon! In the meantime Milt lets Donald Duck deal with his headache in an un-gentlemanly manner, whilst 'Astoria' sends us delving into our dreams in a weekend foreign market, and John Roman gets a clickity-click on the remix.
