Jack White – “Love is Blindness” (U2 Cover)

10 11 2011

As you probably could have predicted, the White Stripes’ recent breakup didn’t put a damper on Jack White’s impossibly prolific churning out of jams. As you probably couldn’t have predicted, the latest channel for his blues-inspired soul-rock shredding is Q Magazine’s tribute to U2’s Achtung Baby, 20 years old this year.

Jack White & Bob Dylan Record Hank Williams’ Unfinished Songs

10 04 2011

Hank Williams may have died almost sixty years ago, but the country pioneer’s legacy lives on in the form of an abundance of unreleased and incomplete sheet music. Under the auspices of producer Mary Martin, twelve brave singers and songwriters endeavored to finish or record Williams’ lost material – it’ll all be released on The Lost Notebooks of Hank Williams.

White Denim – Live at Third Man 12″

09 01 2011

We are of the opinion that no band deserves the live LP treatment more than Austin’s White Denim, so we were psyched to hear that Jack White felt the same way, and would be releasing the band’s Live at Third Man session on his Third Man imprint. The label says the record “would be at home on a record shelf not only packed with Lee Hazelwood records but also Pharoah Sanders and Amon Duul,” which is not only high praise, but also speaks to the band’s uncanny knack for eluding classification over their 5 year history. The recording — which was produced by Jack White himself — does not disappoint, and can be purchased here. No preview of this one, as we are told that the session was recorded live to tape and pressed straight from tape to acetate, so no digital masters exist. But to give you an idea of what you’re in for, here’s a live rendition of “Street Joy” that WD played recently for Sirius XMU, as well as the band’s blazing/legendary performance on Nigel Godrich’s From the Basement:

Previously Unreleased White Stripes – “Signed D.C.” & “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long”

07 14 2011

Ever since Jack and Meg announced their official split, fans have spent hours upon hours mourning and hoping that this was all just some kind of twisted and cruel joke. But as time moves forward it appears that a “we were just playing” statement is quite unlikely (at the moment).

Jack White & Black Milk – “Brain” / “Royal Mega”

07 12 2011

Jack White has never been one to shy away from collaboration, even ones that don’t make much sense on paper. Earlier this year, rock’s resident monarch signed Detroit MC Black Milk to his Third Man Records, and we can finally hear what the two have been cooking together.

ALBUM REVIEW: Danger Mouse & Daniele Luppi – Rome

05 16 2011

C+ | 5.17.11 | Capitol | Mog | Amazon | Insound

“Black” featuring Norah Jones

Rome, Danger Mouse and Italian composer Daniele Luppi’s lavish and pitch-perfect love letter to Ennio Morricone, is something of a twice-over orphan: an original motion picture soundtrack in need of a Sergio Leone film reel, and a curio in need of an audience. Its cinematic ambitions shine marquee-bright. On the album’s cover, the two composers “present” their work, in true Hollywood fashion, while Jack White and Norah Jones, its dramatis personae, “star” in it. Rome even contains its very own “theme,” by way of its opening track, its coo a blatant aping of the iconic whistle of The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.

Danger Mouse & Jack White – “The World”

05 09 2011

It might seem to you that producer extraordinaire Danger Mouse and Italian composer Daniele Luppi’s Rome project also consists of Jack White in its entirety, but unfortunately this is the last from the record that will feature White’s signature vocals.

Danger Mouse x Jack White – “The Rose With The Broken Neck”

04 20 2011

Producer extraordinaire Danger Mouse and Italian film composer Daniele Lupi have been working on their Rome project for years now, but we only got to hear the first previews a few weeks back when Jack White‘s Third Man Records released a Record Store Day only exclusive. The vinyl comprised of two tracks from Rome: the White fronted “Two Against One” and “Black” with Norah Jones.
