Brooklyn foursome the Drums had a big year – their June self-titled debut received widespread acclaim for its surfy, poppy jams. The record’s biggest, most emphatic songs, “Down By the Water,” has been around for a while – it appeared on the band’s initial EP Summertime. British synth-pop duo Hurts turned in a remix of that song to provide a b-side for the Drums’ upcoming “Me and the Moon” single. Cranking up the drums and the soaring synthesized strings over the original’s tender surf guitar, Hurts made “Down By the Water” into an anthem as magnificent as the original. Listen to it below:

Hurts have empathetically reinvented 80′s UK cosmic pop throughout 2010 with loads of new material sparking comparisons to the iconic talking heads and sounds to early roots depeche mode.

There have been a few hit/miss official remixes from the duo with the more recent ‘stay’ ep really trucking down the good.

Heavyweight muso machines and recent Australian Parklife tourers Groove Armada set the tone for a slow burning industrial mix stretching through to the 2 minute mark before dropping some lovely drums, piano and handclaps.

There’s also a ‘Full Intention Club Mix’ that says no to settling and soars into a up-beat build, not content with just ‘chillin.
