Hard Summer Returns as a 2-day Festival

Following the success of the free, sold-out “Hard x Mouth Taped Shut” shows (London, Stockholm, New York, Chicago and San Francisco) and the maiden voyage of “Hard’s Holy Ship!”, the world’s first three-day electronic music cruise, now comes news for the return of Hard Summer. For the first time in its 5-year history, the downtown Los Angeles destination festival will expand to a two-day event, Friday, August 3 and Saturday, August 4, and returns to the Los Angeles State Historic Park, this time with four stages and 60-plus artists. $99 two-day passes go on sale this Saturday, January 21 at 10:00 a.m. PT at www.hardfest.com.

In 2011, Hard Summer—the largest ticketed music festival in the city of Los Angeles—took on a larger-than-life identity that culminated with 30,000 fans descending upon the Los Angeles State Historic Park to experience performances from an elite group of progressive electronic music artists, including Skrillex, Chromeo, Ratatat, Duck Sauce, Boys Noize, Odd Future and more. “This is the best welcome home party I’ve ever had,” said Skrillex in a piece at LAWeekly.com.

What can fans expect for Hard Summer 2012, a music festival known for its diverse lineup of the most cutting-edge, innovative electronic artists on the scene accompanied by trailblazers from both hip-hop and rock ‘n’ roll? Says Hard founder, promoter and DJ (as Destructo) Gary Richards: “My motto for this year is ‘Trust me.’ This is our fifth year, and I think by now we’ve shown the fans we bring the big names and we introduce the newest of the new every time. We want people to know that we’re so confident about this event that you can start making plans. Book your hotel, pick your outfits, reserve a car because there’s no doubt this is going to be the music event of the summer.”

As a two-day event, “there’s a new element of exploring downtown, meeting people from other places, and creating a whole weekend of adventures,” says Richards. “That’s on top of the 16 hours of madness inside HARD Summer’s boundless acres.”

Adds Richards: “It’s important to me that we as a city and as a company look at this as a destination festival and welcome the people who are going to travel here to our hometown to be a part of this experience. I’ll be happiest to see the boost to the local economy because this isn’t a car-camping, mud-puddle festival; this is right in the middle of gorgeous downtown LA. You’ve got Chinatown, Little Tokyo and all these wonderful places to visit here.”

Hard maintains a strong bond with its audience: “For our loyal L.A. fans, I think most of them already know why the success has grown with us,” says Richards. “Hard’s total ticket price is less than a fraction of other festival tickets, but you’re getting to see 60 amazing artists that I’ve hand-picked for you. You can get to and from the park quickly and safely on the Metro for mere pocket change. The park itself is beautiful, and I’m glad we’ve been able to bring it so much attention (and I can’t wait to surprise you all with some of the improvements we’re making).”
The 2012 line up will underline Hard’s commitment to exposing new talent. Explains Richards: “I’m always happy to give more exposure to the great acts that people haven’t necessarily gotten to see yet. But for the most part, this line-up is going to be about pairing some of the new talent you might not know yet with the legends of electronic music that have yet to play a Hard event. 2012 promises to double the experience.”

Mixmag’s Greatest Dance Act of All Time

The results are in! From September to December last year, you voted in your tens of thousands to decide who was the greatest dance act of all time.
The poll was embraced by fans from Birmingham to Buenos Aires – acts campaigned fiercely, heated debate ensued and all of our expectations were exceeded by your response to the poll.

And now the wait is over. Below is a list of your top twenty greatest dance acts of all time, including the all important winner.

In a closely run battle, we can now reveal that The Prodigy have emerged victorious, pipping robotic legends, Daft Punk, into second place by a very tight margin.

Keith Flint of The Prodigy commented: “To walk off a stage and feel like we smashed it – that’s the reward for us, to see the crowd react and know we’ve done what we’ve come to do. But something like this is truly voted for by the people – and essentially we are nothing without them, so it feels awesome and really respectful.”

All at Mixmag offer congratulations to The Prodigy, an act who have managed to stay as exciting as ever, over two decades on from their first gig.

The full results are published in the latest issue of Mixmag, on sale today (Thursday January 19) with comment from all the acts in the top 20. You can grab an iPad/iPhone version here.

We are sure you will have plenty say on the results of the poll, so get busy in the comment boxes below.

Universal Music, RIAA Websites Attacked Following Megaupload Shutdown

CNNMoney reports that following today’s shut down Megaupload by federal prosecutors, “hacktivist” collective Anonymous has apparently attacked the websites for the Department of Justice, Universal Music Group, the Recording Industry Association of America, and the Motion Picture Association of America. A Department of Justice representative commented to CNN, “We are having website problems, but we’re not sure what it’s from”.

The Twitter account AnonOps seems to have confirmed that Anonymous is behind the website takedowns.

Art Department @ Troyka Multispace

Eastern Europe isn’t a forgotten land in the wide world of dance, it just seems shrouded in secrecy. Art Deparment took a trip to Russia and dropped their signature deep, dark, gooey house in an intimate setting at Moscow’s Troyka Multispace. Looks like they know what they’re doing in the land once hidden behind the “iron curtain.”
In the clip, you may recognize Art Department’s remix of DJ T.‘s massive ”Burning”; get it on Beatport here and check out more from the Toronto outfit here, including their recent remix of My Favorite Robot’s ”Wakinda Park.”

GDD™ Evening Update: Underworld, HARD X MOUTH TAPED SHUT, Occupy Movement, MTV DJ Awards, Deadmau5 Death Hoax

12 12 2011

I hope you all had amazing weekend! Rather than the regular morning update today, we have an evening update of the top stories in the world of Electronic music. On this rainy day in Los Angeles we are catching up on news from Underworld, HARD X MOUTH TAPED SHUT, the Occupy Movement, MTV’s Top DJ’s, and DEADMAU5′s death hoax.

Underworld Announced As Music Directors For The Opening Ceremony Of The London 2012 Olympic Games

The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) today announced that British electronic music pioneers Underworld have been appointed Music Directors for the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games. The appointment completes the team of senior creatives that will lead the direction of the London 2012 Ceremonies.

Underworld duo Rick Smith and Karl Hyde will work alongside Oscar winning British filmmaker and producer Danny Boyle, Artistic Director of the Opening Ceremony and will be responsible for all the music in the three-hour ceremony taking place on 27 July next summer.

Underworld and Danny Boyle have enjoyed a long and diverse collaboration since Underworld’s track ‘Born Slippy’ featured in Boyle’s film ‘Trainspotting’. Over the following fifteen years the three developed a close relationship, with Smith and Hyde supplying specially created music for ‘A Life Less Ordinary’, ‘The Beach’ and co-scoring the 2007 sci-fi film ‘Sunshine’. In 2010 they came together again to work on the critically acclaimed National Theatre production of ‘Frankenstein’.

Danny Boyle said: ‘Appointing Underworld to direct the music in the Olympic Opening Ceremony is the final piece of the jigsaw for the team of leading British creatives who will deliver the ceremonies.

‘What’s interesting about working with them is how much broader their taste is than you might imagine. With ‘Frankenstein’ we really saw how far we could take a broader approach than we’d used together on the films.’

Rick Smith said: ‘The ‘Frankenstein’ project at the National Theatre was our opportunity to test ourselves as writers and music directors in a completely new environment – Danny asked us to take responsibility for every aspect of the sound and music and encouraged us to draw on a wide musical palette. It was a challenging piece of work with its roots in classic literature, that turned out to be the most fun I’ve ever had.’

Karl Hyde said: ‘We want to leave people with a musical memory of the show rather than a purely visual one. It’s a great honour to be asked to do this and one we’re taking very seriously – it’s certainly not something we’ll get the chance to do again.’

LOCOG has put in place a talented team of leading British creatives to lead the direction of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic ceremonies.

In May 2010 Stephen Daldry, Mark Fisher, Hamish Hamilton, and Catherine Ugwu, were appointed as Executive Producers across all four Ceremonies, and Danny Boyle, was appointed as Artistic Director for the Olympic Games Opening Ceremony.

In February 2011 Take That’s creative director Kim Gavin was appointed Artistic Director for the Closing Ceremonies of both the Olympic and Paralympic Games. He was joined by multi-award-winning stage and costume designer Es Devlin and Bond film composer and record producer David Arnold as part of the Closing Ceremonies team.

In June 2011 Jenny Sealey MBE and Bradley Hemmings were appointed as Artistic Directors of the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Paralympic Games.

Thom Yorke and Massive Attack’s 3D Discuss the Occupy Movement

The Occupy London website has posted a new video interview with Thom Yorke and Massive Attack’s Robert ’3D’ Del Naja, in which both artists voice support for the Occupy movement. The interview was filmed at a holiday party for Occupy London where, as previously reported, both artists performed DJ sets.

According to the Occupy London site, “The performances have been recorded for an album and HD video, to be made available to help raise money for Occupy London and the wider Occupy movement. Both will soon be available on a ‘pay what you want’ basis from the Occupation Records label.”

Yorke explained that the film Inside Job helped him understand the financial crisis. “The banking system, it’s like the law of God, it’s like beyond us, we’re not allowed to think about it,” he said. “Most politicians don’t understand the banking system at all. They’re told they’ve got to mop up, they just mop up.”

When discussing the Occupy movement, he said, “You don’t need to be an anarchist, you don’t need to be someone who smashes the state to have sympathy with that viewpoint.” He added, “I think if the British government is not prepared to really make amends to the British people for this, by penalizing the banks the way they should, then I think we should do it ourselves.”

Del Naja said, “[In America] Congress are trying to back a few people, to protect the wealth of a very few,” he said. “That, on any level is ridiculous and sad.” He added, “It’s organized crime on a global scale.”

Best EDM Artists Of 2011 – MTV counts down the top 10 electronic dance music artists of the year

We’ve been covering the movement, but this year we tapped some of our EDM pros to commemorate a seminal year for the genre. MTV News’ Akshay Bhansali and Adam Stewart, MTV Coordinator of Music & Talent Rawley Bornstein and MTV World Music Director Micah McKinney sat down for a roundtable discussion — moderated by MTV News’ Sway Calloway — about the biggest players this year and crowned our top 10.

10. Martin Solveig
When Irv Gotti stopped by MTV News’ “RapFix Live” in October, he joked, “We’re just one record away from Kanye or Jay [being like]: [sings hook to Solveig's 'Hello'] ‘I just came to say hello — Hov!’ ” Gotti was kidding, but it’s true. Rap dudes beware: Songs like “Hello” and guys like Martin have seen such widespread success that the hip-hop industry, which has long enjoyed club and radio dominance, is shook. In addition to being a technically superior producer and DJ, Solveig has also proven to the world that he has a sense of humor. His “Smash” video series — including “Hello,” “Initial S.H.E,” “Ready 2 Go” and “Big in Japan” — are some of the funniest and most well-produced clips of any genre. Kudos to Martin and his “manager” Lafaille for making us laugh and dance in 2011.

9. Tiësto
Veteran DJ/producer Tiësto might not be trance anymore, but judging by his popularity, fans don’t seem to care. How else do you set a record for the largest single DJ event — 26,000 fans attended his Carson, California, show — in U.S. history? T had hit collabos this year with Mark Knight, Hardwell, Diplo and, oh, Kanye West (sure, the Yeezy track hasn’t been released yet, but everyone’s heard it!). And if you can’t produce like Tiësto, at least now you can look like him: The EDM titan’s Club Life clothing line just hit select stores in New York and L.A.

8. Kaskade
Coming off a massive 2010 highlighted by Dynasty, Kaskade watched as his 2011 studio album, Fire & Ice, quickly became a staple in a healthy EDM diet. With features from Skrillex and Dada Life, and even vocals from rising star Skylar Grey, you’d be hard-pressed to find music lovers who couldn’t identify with or enjoy his breezy music in one way or another. The Illinois native pioneered the Identity Festival, which brought real-deal dance to America’s small cities. He also conquered Las Vegas’ day and nightlife and was named America’s Top DJ of 2011. Not a bad year for Mr. Ryan Raddon, not a bad year at all.

7. Calvin Harris
2011 was a marquee year for this Scotsman. Riding high on the success of Ready for the Weekend, Harris “Bounce”-ed and “Awooga”-ed with his adoring EDM fans the world over. He also infiltrated the mainstream by teaming up with Rihanna for a pair of hit collabos: the chart-topping “We Found Love” and “Where Have You Been.” As he gears up for his third studio album, Harris’ presence in EDM and pop culture is undeniable, and at this pace, he’ll be unstoppable in 2012.

6. Avicii
This year, Avicii underscored his place as dance music’s “Piano Man” (sorry, Bill Joel fans!). It started with “Blessed” (featuring Shermanology), continued with “Fade Into Darkness” (and Leona Lewis’ “Collide,” let’s be real) and capped off with the eagerly awaited release of “Levels.” Yes, Avicii’s keys and vocals went pop in ’11, and Flo Rida would certainly back us up on this as his Etta James vocal is sampled on Flo’s “Good Feeling.” To close out the year, Sweden’s Tim Bergling (stage names: Avicii, Tim Berg, Tom Hangs) is nominated for the Best Dance Recording Grammy with David Guetta for DG’s “Sunshine.” But before that Big Apple ball drops, Avicii will rock New York with a sold-out New Year’s Eve show.

5. Afrojack
Holland’s towering bleep-bender put on a spectacle of versatility in the past 12 months. Afro-beats scored monster mainstream U.S. radio singles for Beyoncé, Chris Brown and Pitbull. And then there’s his EDM game: Nearly a dozen collabos bearing his name charted in Beatport.com’s top 10, with Nervo, Steve Aoki, R3hab and Quintino onboard for a few. He wrapped up the year with a Grammy nom and the earth-shaking single “Lionheart,” and we can only pray he’ll deliver a video for it in ’12 … with a Jean-Claude Van Damme cameo.

4. Swedish House Mafia
Dubbed by MTV News as the “holy trinity of house music,” the rock stars of dance were everywhere this year, from “Miami 2 Ibiza,” Las Vegas to Brazil and all points in between. Not only did they succeed as a unified front, but Axwell, Steve Angello and Sebastian Ingrosso also soared as individual brands. And thanks to their Size, Axtone and Refune record labels, stellar acts like Thomas Gold, Swanky Tunes, Junior Sanchez, Third Party, Max Vangeli, AN21 and buzzworthy young rookie Alesso are on the verge of becoming household names. On the heels of a historic show at New York’s iconic Madison Square Garden this week, and a 2012 Grammy nod for “Save the World,” the Swedish Flag has been firmly planted in the American EDM soil.

3. deadmau5
“4×4=12″ cranked out hit after hit after hit. He nailed well over 100 live tour dates on the Meowingtons Hax Tour, earned RIAA gold with “Ghosts N Stuff” and headlined the traditionally all-rock Lollapalooza fest. Did we mention the wonder born Joel Zimmerman turned a skyscraper into a 4-D experience in London and bid farewell to a Playmate? I mean, who else can say they did that? The dude has balls N stuff.

2. David Guetta
David Guetta’s career has definitely gone pop this year — including the radio hits “Where Them Girls At” (featuring Nicki Minaj and Flo Rida) and “Without You” (featuring Usher) — but for EDM purists, his Nothing but the Beat had plenty to offer too, like stellar co-productions with Afrojack (“Lunar” and “The Future”) and Avicii (on the Grammy-nominated “Sunshine”). DJ Mag crowned Guetta the #1 DJ on the planet, and he headlined the world’s biggest festival’s, including Belgium’s Tomorrowland, Miami’s Ultra Music Festival and Las Vegas’ Electric Daisy Carnival. Guetta’s American Music Awards performance with Minaj seems to indicate that “Turn Me On” will be the next single from Nothing but the Beat, and fans can expect a shocking new video (and much more, we’re sure) early next year.

1. Skrillex
MTV’s EDM Artist of 2011 scored a whopping five Grammy nominations this year, including being the first DJ to land a Best New Artist nod. Indeed, Skrill’s musical background — both on his own and as a member of his former group, From First to Last — has carried over into his brand of fiery electronica. Skrillex has garnered an audience the world over that includes ravers, house heads and rockers alike. In today’s laptop generation of music, Skrillex is the new “rock.” From his remix of Benny Benassi and Gary Go’s “Cinema” to the recent Avicii pop song “Le7els” (not officially released yet), Skrillex dropped massive re-workings in ’11, in addition to his More Monsters and Sprites EP. He scored video games, produced records for Korn, launched his own OWSLA label and hit almost every major festival in the States, including Coachella and Lollapalooza. An exceptional catalog of releases coupled with an incessant touring schedule has made Skrillex the biggest EDM star of the year, and in 2012, he plans to tour 322 of the 365 days.

Deadmau5 Mocks Latest Death Hoax: ‘Thought We Had All Agreed on Acid…’

(photo via Rukes)

Deadmau5 is not dead. Again. He is dead funny, though.

The superstar DJ also known as Joel Zimmerman woke up Monday morning to yet another death hoax making its way through the twittersphere (and one gullible Australian music news site) after pranksters altered his Wikipedia page to read: “On December 11, 2011, a day after performing at the 2011 Spike Video Game Awards Joel collapsed in his hotel room in Los Angeles due to exhaustion and apparent Alcohol intoxication.”

Whomever edited this wiki got pretty darn detailed, considering it allegedly happened only hours earlier, writing: “After friends attempted to enter his room but were unable to get a response, they reportedly called his phone, then asked management to open the door after he didn’t answer. They found him on the floor, not breathing. He was subsequently rushed to the emergency room and pronounced dead on arrival.”

In reality, Deadmau5 did perform at the VGA awards and, according to his later tweet, “did get pretty wasted last night.” But mostly Zimmerman just seemed disappointed at how boring his supposed death was.

“Once again, extremely disappointed by the insanely uncreative death rumor,” he posted on Facebook. “i thought we had all agreed on acid spitting koala’s skydiving and volcano? oh well… still glad to see some ‘press’ taking this s— seriously.”

This follows CNN allegedly reporting that Skrillex had snuffed it in a plane crash on Dec. 9. While the dubstep producer tweeted his disappointment (“Third death rumor about me this year…wtf?”) we’re sure Deadmau5 was totes jealous that his DJ peer got a more interesting death hoax than, y’know, getting drunk.

New Orbital Album & UK Tour

Last summer, reunited UK electro duo Orbital unveiled their first bit of new music in seven years with the release of a double A-sided single. Now, they’re ready to expand their efforts into a full-length release, their first since 2004′s Blue Album.

The as yet untitled record, due out sometime in 2012, is described by Orbital’s Paul Hartnoll as “a kaleidoscope of everything we like about electronic music. But the biggest influence on this album has been two years of playing live, listening to old Orbital music. We wanted to make music that we would like to play live. It had to flow and ebb like a live set.” Below, you can hear an early taste in the form of the album track “Never”.

Never by ORBITAL

In support of the release, Orbital has mapped out a UK tour for April 2012. Check out their itinerary below, and stay tuned for additional album details, audio previews, and tour dates.

Gary Richards readies electronic music party Hard Haunted Mansion

DJ and Hard founder Gary Richards threw the first Hard dance party at a downtown L.A. warehouse on his birthday on New Year’s Eve 2007. It was the natural extension of his productions in the early ’90s, when he was doing A&R for Rick Rubin at Def American and when his parties drew Robert Downey Jr., Madonna, Björk and other celebs. But that New Year’s Eve party was the first tremor of a massive tectonic shift in music culture that has since shown Richards to be something of a visionary on the electronic music scene.

Gary Richards: An article in the Oct. 25 Calendar section about DJ and Hard founder Gary Richards said that the 2009 Hard Summer dance party was shut down by the Los Angeles Police Department. It was shut down by the Inglewood Police Department.

He now produces the New Year’s party, Hard Summer, Hard NYC, all manner of other Hard one-offs like the upcoming cruise ship DJ event called Holy Ship, and what many people consider one of the best parties of the year, Hard Haunted Mansion. This year’s fourth annual Halloween bash happens Friday and Saturday at the 54,000-square-foot Shrine Expo Hall and features Fatboy Slim, Soulwax, Skrillex and dozens more including Richards himself, who performs under the moniker Destructo.

In the wake of Electric Daisy Carnival‘s departure from L.A. and the controversy that continues to swirl around these events (including the Hollywood riot that ensued when DJKaskade played for the opening of the EDC movie in July), we talk to Richards about the state of the party.

To what do you attribute the resurgence of electronic music in the late 2000s?

I think that college and high school kids are looking for something new; they are tired of the same old generic rock and hip-hop, and they finally got hold of electronic music and realized it’s an amazing form of music and it also comes with this crazy party scene. The other part of it is the Internet; the Internet did a lot to kill the sales of music, but people can hear music from all around the world, which created this whole new scene.

When Electric Daisy Carnival left L.A., did that leave a vacuum? Would you like to see your events play host to over 100,000 people?

A 100,000-person event seems pretty hard to control, maybe we could get more in the park of 50,000.

How did you react when you heard an underage girl died from an Ecstasy overdose at the 2010 Electric Daisy Carnival? Do you feel a burden to defend the genre?

First off, I feel terrible. I have kids. Since I’ve started this thing — and especially after the summer of 2010 — we really focused on how we can do these events and make them safe. I just wish that people would view what we do as another event. There are other festivals where things happen: Over the summer, there was a storm in Pukkelpop where a tree fell and it hit a stage and it killed 20 people; that could happen at my event, so to categorize it with the music is not good. All of a sudden electronic music is the devil.

The bottom line is it’s where music is going and no one is going to be able to stop that, so I think the best way to tackle it is for everyone to work together to make the events as safe as they can be. If you see someone coming into your event who looks intoxicated, don’t let him in. If you see someone coming into your event and they wanna bring in drugs, make sure they don’t get in.

Electro music can be heard on pop music stations like Power 106. Did you ever think it would go mainstream?

I thought this was gonna happen 20 years ago. … What took everyone so long?

In 2009, Hard Summer was shut down by the LAPD two hours in. Were you afraid that this was the end of Hard?

Yeah, I’ve had never anything like that happen to me on that kind of level. The first thing I thought was: Let’s give everyone’s money back and make good with our fans so we don’t rip them off. It was a seven-figure loss; it was brutal. But I knew that this thing was special so I kept going. It actually was two steps back to go 10 steps forward.

What makes Hard Haunted Mansion different from the other Hard events?

We had Deadmau5 play in 2008 … and he made that song “Ghosts N’ Stuff” for the event. We had DJ AM, and he had on Thomas Bangalter’s outfit from Daft Punk [as a costume]. He did Daft Punk, Daft Punk, Daft Punk, I was like, “Oh my God, I am going to be in trouble, everybody is going to think this is Daft Punk!” And 40 minutes in, he took his hat off and [the crowd] was like, “AM! AM!” He told me, “That was probably one of the funnest times I’ve ever had in my life.”

Interview + Exclusive mix after the jump!

GDD: To get things started off right, what’s your drink of choice? First one is on the blog.
NT89: Vodka and Pineapple juice

GDD: Being from Italy, how were you musically raised that influenced you to produce Electronic music? What bands or artists did you grow up listening to?
NT89: When I was 10 my older brother bought the Daft Punk first album, I immediately fell in love with it, growing up I started to discover also the beautiful darker side of electronic music with Tiga, Dj Hell and all the german scene.

GDD: How did you land the job as studio assistant for the Bloody Beetroots? What did it consist of?
NT89: It’s a secret I can’t talk about it.

GDD: Haha…given the Bloody Beetroot’s style of production, is it safe to say that you’re more of a hardware than a VST man then? What’s your home production setup consist of?
NT89: Actually Bloody Beetroots started with software production, just lately he’s using more & more analog gear, so am I.

GDD: You’re live performance is something unique and definitely makes you stand out from just the standard DJ set. What all makes up your live setup and what exactly are you doing towards the live performance?
NT89: It’s a wider and more personal expression of my ideas, it’s entirely produced and composed by me, I have the total control of each single sound live, it runs trought ableton and 3 launchpads.

GDD: We hear you use Native Instruments’ Traktor when DJing and we’re big supporters of that over here as well. What do you like most about Traktor, specifically the new Traktor 2?
NT89: I love traktor, it gives endless possibiities to a dj set, even more with the new sample decks option.

GDD: You’ve played all over the world and I’m sure every show has been an experience. Where have you had the most fun and where do you think NT89 has the best crowd support?
NT89: It’s really hard to pick a favourite but i would say at Rauw in Amsterdam with Erol Alkan, i really felt like the whole crowd was feeling every single second of that set, incredible vibes…about the crowd I think the english and the dutch ones make me feel totally free to try anything.

GDD: That being said, when are we going to see you finally come to the US? We understand you had some Visa issues and we were heartbroken to hear that…
NT89: Yes there wasn’t basically enough time to get it done before my departure so we decided to make it later, I don’t know the exact dates yet but i hope very soon

GDD: We’ve seen you’re sound grow since 2008 when you first made your name known…. How have you been influenced since you started producing electronic music? Any artists/producers you have to give credit to that helped shape your sound today?
NT89: Yes, obviously there is someone who helped me a lot, I have to thank mainly Congorock, Brodinski, Bloody Beetroots & Shinichi Osawa for supporting me and giving me wise suggestions about my sound and my career, about the influence I think the whole stuff Turbo has been releasing is super inspiring.

GDD: Having said that, your original tracks and remixes have been supported by just about all the big names today in the electronic music scene. Anyone in particular that’s really helped boost your confidence with their support?
NT89: Erol Alkan, he’s my hero, when I heared him playing my track I felt like I was going in the right direction.

GDD: Your collaboration with Camel “Flush” and “Jetlag” are finally coming out this week on our collaborative label with Hardfest’s Nitrus Records. How did that collaboration (with Camel) come about in the past? Who would you
love to work with on a track if you could with anyone? Any upcoming collaborations you can tell us about as well?
NT89: We were exchanging tracks then we both loved eachothers stuff and we thought maybe a collaboration would make something very good, one day I made that big bass flute and I immediately thought he could make this amazing with his signature drums and groove feeling. Jetlag was the inverse, the initiial idea was his and I added my structure. We’re very proud with the end results… I would love to work with anyone I admire, I don’t know, it would be awesome & a bit weird to pass some time in studio with Sven Vath, something different than my usual taste.

GDD: Do you think music blogs have been important to the rising popularity of electronic music? What is your stance on how music is passed along so quickly via the internet, through music blogs and aggregator sites like Hype Machine? Has it been beneficial for your tracks and mixes specifically?
NT89: I think they have been essential to this scene, maybe the most important aspect, it was very exciting in the first times but then like, everything getting very popular it got out of control and now there are just very few blogs who you can actually trust with bringing quality.

GDD: THINK FAST – If you were a superhero, what one special power do you think you would have and why would you want it?
NT89: No doubt on this – teleportation and I think every travelling dj agrees with me.

GDD: What’s next for NT89? Any top secret plans you can hint us on? What other producers should we look out for this year?
NT89: I’m working on some big collaborations (I can’t spoil the names yet) and more original material.
I think TWR72, Clouds, John Roman & RipTide will be big very soon.

GDD: And finally, when your not working, do you like to dance dirty?
NT89: I LOVE TO DANCE DIRTY.

*Well there you have it folks! True words from NT89, and below we have his exclusive mix for GDD and his DirtyNitrus release, so get the mix and make sure to get DN002: Flush/Jetlag, out now on Beatport!
