Below is the latest edition of our weekly feature, Stuck On Repeat. The premise is simple, we’ve asked all our contributors to submit one track and a brief write-up. The track can be new or it can be old, just whatever we could not stop listening to this week. These are the songs we’ve had Stuck On Repeat.
:: selected by: V :: Deptford Goth – Real Love Fantasy
Who doesn’t love Mariah Carey’s “Fantasy“? It’s an anthem of sorts around here; if I had to name ten tracks that summarize this blog, it would land somewhere in the top three. South London’s Deptford Goth is a kindred spirit with his Mariah Carey-referencing “Real Love Fantasy”. It’s not a cover, but is through and through, the feeling, the spirit of “Fantasy”, done up in a different palette of sounds. Glossy vocoder vocals slosh around twinkling production. Then the chorus hits, unmistakably familiar as Mariah’s “Fantasy”, despite the clever lyric swapping. Someone hook this dude up with Jai Paul and let’s get some magic brewing.
:: selected by: Moneyworth :: Missy Elliott – Work it (Nicolas Jaar Rework)
Nicolas Jaar, light of my life, fire in my loins. I passed out around 10pm the night of his DJ set in Chicago, which I had been looking forward to rabidly all year. Apparently, he closed it with this rework of Missy’s “Work It”; my friend told me he had it only on his iPod and apologetically popped it on and everyone freaked out. My one musical regret this year is not being there for that moment. Real talk, I have yet to be disappointed by anything Jaar has done, ever, and there’s nothing that makes my heart swoon like a dude who makes sparse, sophisticated music but also appreciates hip-hop (see also: Harmonimix).
:: selected by: Jams Dean :: Gucci Mane – Running Back (Jonwayne’s Braid Mix)
8-bit beatmaker Jonwayne released a five song Remixes Are Things EP a little bit ago that bridges hip-hop and nerds on a new level, but a very fun one. The music mostly sounds like it was made by WALL-E. With
the zip download came a creepy obsessive message from Jonwayne about how he thinks “most remixes suck” and how he wants to, “Make beats for Gucci Mane…Drake, Busta, Twista, whoever the fuck. Radio men.” Proclamations aside, this Gucci remix rules, although I’m less particular than Jonwayne and I think most Gucci remixes rule. Jonwayne is a pretty talented guy, and if he never gets a hold of those radio men, I’m available.
