New: Grizzly Bear’s Daniel Rossen – “Silent Song”

02 01 2012

If you’re anything like us, you’re about ready for new Grizzly Bear material. Their last outing, Veckatimest, may have aged like the finest of wines, but we are still thrilled to hear Daniel Rossen’s stunning voice in a new, Grizzly Bear-esque setting. The new “Silent Song,” and last week’s “Saint Nothing,” are not from his band’s next album (which is due out sometime in 2012), but from his forthcoming solo EP, Silent Hour / Golden Mile, which is slated for a March 20th release. You can hear the new song at Rolling Stone. Stream “Saint Nothing” below:

Grizzly Bear’s Daniel Rossen – “Saint Nothing”

01 19 2012

Daniel Rossen has an absolute gift for crafting strange and beautiful chamber pop (case in point: his two bands, Grizzly Bear and Department of Eagles, and his staggering songwriting and guitar work for each), so we’re psyched for the five-song solo EP, Silent Hour / Golden Mile, he’ll drop March 20.

Saint Nothing” is taken from Daniel Rossen’s new EP Silent Hour / Golden Mile, out March 19 on Warp. Rossen says of the EP:

“When you spend so much time touring around, you can lose perspective on what you’re trying to do. All the sudden, I had no idea what to do or what to make or anything…These songs were a way for me to figure that out again, getting my legs back.”

CANT – “She Found A Way Out”

Chris Taylor is the guy in Grizzly Bear who plays the nine million instruments. Does that narrow it down enough? He’s the nominal bassist in the New York quartet, but for Taylor the word “bass” connotes not just the instrument but a rather broad concept – I’ve watched him switch through a selection of woodwinds on more than one occasion, and the pedal setup at his feet during live shows is always intimidatingly diverse. That boy’s-choir feel, the dizzying layering of voices that made songs like “Cheerleader” on Grizzly Bear’s 2009 masterpiece Veckatimest so chillingly beautiful has Taylor’s limber falsetto to thank, not to mention his production skills (he’s also lent those to Dirty Projectors, the Morning Benders, and Twin Shadow, among other bands). As if that weren’t enough, Taylor co-owns Terrible Records, who have been busy releasing 7”s from Blood Orange, Chairlift, and Violens, as well as full-lengths from Twin Shadow and Class Actress, and who  are releasing Taylor’s own solo debut as CANT, Dreams Come True.

Album Stream: CANT – Dreams Come True

09 09 2011

Chris Taylor, Grizzly Bear producer and bassist, and also the man who helped shape the wonderful sounds of bands like Twin Shadow and the morning benders, has a solo album out next week (9/13) under the moniker CANT. Rest assured, the album, Dreams Come True, sounds nothing like any of the bands mentioned above, a testament to Taylor’s versatility and immense creativity.
