::M∆DE::IN::HEIGHTS::

12 09 2011

::M∆DE::IN::HEIGHTS:: describe themselves as mythical filth pop which I think is quite accurate. Their 808 hip hop influenced sound is unique and otherworldly.  Tied together nicely with the pop female vocals of Kelsey Bulkin.  They’re from New York and a side project of Sabzi, the man behind the smooth boom-bap of Seattle duos Blue Scholars and Common Market.

Ellie Goulding – Lights

11 21 2011

Interactive studio HelloEnjoy has built a mind-blowing 3D interactive music video for Ellie Goulding’s song ‘Lights’. Good job HelloEnjoy and Ellie Goulding, this is what I want to see more in music videos in the future. Take a look and experience Ellie Goulding’s ‘Lights’ like you’ve never experienced a music video before.

GET HIGH, WEIRDO

10 26 2011

As you know, the new follow-up album “Psychic Welfare” to 2009′s “Endless Bummer” has dropped from one of Wave’s favourite Philadelphia groups, Pink Skull, as covered in a past post.

Julian Grefe (of Pink Skull) has put together a tripped-out, psyched, experimental mix – full of different colours and tones, weirdness and adventure ; totalling 1hr07min14sec in length + in full 320kbps glory. Through the power of the Internet, this mix has received blessings and been passed onto us by RVNG master Matt, allowing us to undertake the tremendous task / duty of holding it exxclusively on the blog.

So sit down, put on your favourite pair of headphones (with amp if you need a better experience) and enjoy the sounds. I particularly enjoy this mix in the car on those journeys returning home in the after-hours where there is just darkness, you and the music, … rolling on the freeway.

Embrace escapism; always reaching higher and higher.

And here are some wise words from the mind of Julian:

If music be the food of love, play on.
soooooo. what entree is the equivalent of this meandering stumble through the Intraverse?
i’m not sure, to be honest. perhaps some sort of ethiopian food in an ice cream cone???

yet, i digress.

My three favorite places to eat in Philadelphia. If you come visit, you should eat at one if not all three of these places.

1. El Jarocho- Best mexican food in Philadelphia. Hands down. Get the Tacos Carnitas. Or if you’re feeling gluttonous try the Supertorta, it’s about 12 inches in diameter and 8 inches tall, and it one piece of everything on the menu. They don’t offer the Supertorta all the time- only on special occasions. Not much on decor but the staff are super nice.

2. Hardena- An amazing restaurant in the converted living room of a semi-dilapidated Point Breeze row home. THE FOOD IS AMAZING.
Indonesian cuisine thats 6 dollars for meal. Many vegan dishes and many not so vegan dishes. Get the collard greens in coconut milk. Totally weird and awesome.

3. Saads Halal- A West Philly staple. Get the Chicken Maroosh. It’s the best. And there’s a no cell phone rule in the restaurant. Wonderful.

now listen to the mix.

TKOL 1234567

10 21 2011

TKOL RMX 1234567, the remix album of Radiohead’s latest work, The king of limbs, has been out in Europe for a week now. I noticed that lot’s of people criticised it and, well,  lot’s of you out there have the opinion that remix albums can’t outshine the original and I agree… in most cases, that is, cause this is something completely different! Artists like Caribou, Nathan Fake, Jacques Greene, Four Tet, Blawan, Modeselektor, Jamie XX and SBTRKT have all given their own interpretation of the tracks of the album. The result: a superb mix of reconstructed Radiohead DNA thrown into a new form with respect to the original feel. Of course, some are going to say that a lot sounds impersonal and that the hype associated with these names is overrated. I say: yes, you have a point – somewhere – but you still got to admit you’ll find at least one track on this album that you’re going to like.
Check out the remix by Modeselektor. It’s best to describe it as a weirdo-ish kind of techno…

Beta Hector

09 21 2011

Quirky // Retro Synth // FunkSunbeam Insulin cover

Beta Hector makes retro funky space jams. Sprung from the mind of Simon Hill, the former bass player for retro funk outfit Baby Charles, this project sees a healthy contribution by the raw soul vocals of Dionne Charles. Her voice fits the bolder tracks on Sunbeam Insulin, while for the more subtle tracks Sarah Gardner provides trippy, haunting vocals. The sounds are best described as retro synth soul, with some tracks applying a more funky drum sound, while others are more orchestral. All tracks have two things in common: A deep soul in both the organic and synthesized elements, enhanced by the emotions of of the collaborating vocalists. Tru Thoughts were so kind as to provide an album track and a bonus acoustic version to test your palate. The album is out now in UK/Europe via Etchshop & October 18th in the US.

Woodkid

06 18 2011

cinematic // vocal orchestral

Woodkid (Yoann Lemoine) is probably best known for his work directing films for artists like Katy Perry and Taylor Swift, but those successes haven’t kept him from expanding his talent into new realms. With booming drums, powerful brass, and fluttering woodwinds, the uncomplicated title track to his premier EP “Iron” (accompanied by an eery and equally beautiful video) makes you feel like you’ve entered an epic battle from which there is no turning back.

Powerful simplicity flush with presence.
